An Unqratevdl Tumr.—On Thursday even
ing, during the heavy storm, ae a gontleman
named Morgan was endeavoring to mako his
way up Market street, through the rain, ho was
accosted by a respectably dressed porßon, who
asked for permission to sharo bis umbrella. Mr.
Morgan, not being at all of a selfish disposition,
of ooureo consented, and the two proceeded to
gether as far as the corner of Fourth street,
where tho stranger turned oif, after thanking tho
other for tbo favor conferred* Mr. Morgan pro
ceeded a few doors further, to a store where ho
made a few purchaser. The articles wero tied
up, and the gentlcmaa reached in his pocket for
money to pay for them, but on looking for his
pocket book, he found that article, containing
about $4O, was amongst tho things that were.
Tho smooth spoken person whocamo in hie com
pany to the oorner. had undoubtly abstracted it,
thus exhibiting villainous ingratitude for Mr.
Morgan’s courtesy.
Additional Subscription to tiik Cosnrlls
ville Railroad. —At a meeting of tho Allegheny
Coanoile on Thursday evening, tho Committee on
Ordinances reported an ordinance subscribing
for 6000 shores of tho capital stock of tho Pitts
burgh and Comrcllavillo Railroad. A memorial
from Oliver W. Barnes, President of the Road,
was also read, stating that $1,000,000 had been
subscribed by Baltimore, $750,000 by Allegheny
County, $600,000 by Pittsburgh, and $G*25,000
by individuals. Also, that the oity of Cumberland
and tho Baltimore and Ohio Railroad would
probably subscribe largely. On the adoption of
iho ordiaauoo, there wore three negative votes,
and the ordinance was laid over. There seems
to be no doubt tho amount asked for will be
granted at the next mooting of Councils.
Democratic Primary Elections —Tho pii
mary elections, to eolect delegates to the Demo
cratic County Convention, will bo held this
afternoon and evening, in the vniiuus districts
of the county. In tbo citiea aud boroughs the
election will bo held between the hours of five
and seven; in the townohips, betweeu the hours
of threo and five.
Re-opening of tub Theatre —Manager Fos
ter has just returned from the east with a j op
tion of an excellent stock oompaoy which ho en
gaged thero, and will open tho Theatre in the
courso of a couple of weeks. Au artist or the
first talent has been employed for some time
painting scenery for the rc oponiog.
Tub Markets are naw plentifully prowled
with all kinds of vegetables, fruits, i:o., at ex
coodingly moderate prices. Tho prices of fruit
rule lower, and tho supply is more abuudant
than for years; poors, apples, plums, peaches,
&c., are selling at such rates that eveu the poor
eat and moat economical families can use them.
Robbery in tiis Market —A. gentleman
named Putnam had a valuable silvor watoh
takon from his pocket, in the Diamond market,
yesterday afternoon. Tbo guard by which it
was suspended round his neck, was oat by ssme
sharp instrument, and the watch taken out of
his vest pocket.
Agcidkxt.—Tho scaffolding of a now building
;Q Allegheny, on wbioh a couple of men were
employed, gave way yesterday afternoon, and
precipitated both the men a considerable dis
tance to tho ground, but fortunately without do
ing either of them eerioua iejary.
Sensitive —Captain Pratt is after the local of
tho Journal with a sharp stick, in tho shapo of a
oard in yesterday’s Dispatch, for attempting to
throw discredit on a conundrum perpetrated by
tbe Captain some years ago.
Dedication.— Rt. Rev. Bishop Whelan wiU
•dedicate tho new Catholic church in Washington,
Washington county, on Sunday, the 20 th inat.,
and on the simo day the same prelate will ad
minister the sacrament of Confirmation.
A Splendid Locomotive, to bo placed upon
the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad, is
now at tho foot of Llborty street, waiting to bo
transported across the river
Death from Yellow Fever.—Mr. K M.
KantFman, a member of tbo Vigilant F.nglne
company, of this city, died with tho yellow
fever, reoently, in Now Orleans.
Rev. Bishop Simpson, of the MothoJist Epis
copal Church, will preach in the Housecf Refuge
at o o’clook 1\ M , on Sunday, tho 10th.

Boston, August 17.—Tho America arrived early this
morning.
It was telegraphed from London to Liverpool on the evo
of the departure of the steamer, that the mails from the
battle fleet, to the 31st July, had been received. They
brought nothing of importance beyond tie announcement
of tho capture of a few small batteries at Kalita.
The following is the latest despatch from London: “ Lon
don, Friday evening.—There was a sudden rise to-day, at
noon, In tho fnnds, hot a reaction took place afterwards,
tho rates closing at x / d above yesterday’s quotations. The
government securities have risen to three per cent”
The corn crops in Portugal Is represented as abundant.
The cholera has appeared at Oporto.
Ravages of the Yellow Fever.
Baltimoue, August 17.—Letters from Norfolk represent
tho yellow fever as being on tho increase at that place; 12
deaths and 15 now case* wero reported yesterday. Mid
shipman Walter Jones nod five seamen o.i board the Penn
sylvania are down with the fever. Tbo crew of tho Penn
sylvania had been taken to Oraney Island.
The subscriptions for the roller of the sufferers at Nor
folk have reached $5,l)0o. Provisions are sent down dally
by the boats.
PiTe deaths and three new cases occurred at Richmond
yesterday; the persons were from Qoaport.
Cholera at Fort Riley.
Wasoikutos Oity, August I".—The War Department ban
recolvoJ official information in relation to the ravages of
cholera at Fort Riley. Majors Wood and Armstead were
not dead, as reported, but they had lost their wives by the
disease. The death of Major Ogden is continued. Major
Wood’s two childron and a number of men had alto died.

CruiUESTOH, 8. 0., August lf».—The Know Nothlog Stat*
Council met on Monday night, and abolished the Catholic
Test, and now allows any native to join the Urder who will
renounce nil civil und religious allegiance to any foreign
potentate. The Couocil opposes any infringement of the
existing lights of naturalized citizen*.

Portsmouth.
Nlw York, August 17.—At a meeting of merchants to
day, to adopt measures to relieve the sufferers from fever
at Norfolk and Portsmouth, some $2,000 were subicribed and
forwarded to those places. A Committee was also appoint
tod to solicit further subscriptions.
\V AiuisiiTuN City, August 17.—Information being lodged
with the police late Ust night, that Faulkner, member elect
of Congress, from Virginia, and lioteler, his late opponent,
were here to fight a duel, they wero both arrested this
morning, aud gave security in the sum of J6.OCU tuch, not
to tight here, nor to leave district for that purpose.
