THIS CITY POST.
SATURDAY MORNING:
■ Board of Trade Mietiho. —There was a
meeting of the Board of Trade, at 4 P. M., yes
terday, In the Merohants’ Exohange, but
of’ particular interest transpired. Mr. W. H.
Smith, President pro lent., in the chair.
. After reading and adopting the minutes, the
next thing in order vras the letter of the late
President, resigning his offioe, and declining to
be a candidate at the nett eleotion for Directors.
This was aocepted. ,
Mr. Frank Sellers offered a resolution compli
mentary of Mr John Shipton, the late President,
nbo is now on a visit to Europe, which was
passed unanimously.
The qneßtion of Consolidation coming np in
order, a motion was made and adopted postpon
"lSglts farther diaousaion until the next meeting.
The next eleotion for. Directors takes place on
the first Wednesday of September. The Chair
announced as tellers on that occasion: Josiah
Diokey, H. H. Collins and Wm. 8. Lavely.
The Telegraph Committee, appointed to enter
into arrangements for procuring telegraphio re
ports of the markets from different points, did
not make any report. As a full telegraphic re
port of the markets is looked upon as a ohief
feature of the Exohange, it is somewhat strange
the Committee have not displayed a little more
enterprise.
This was abont all the matters transacted,
when the meeting adjourned.
Aocidest at Alliance. —From a gentleman,
who came np on the train last evening, we learn
that when the Pittsburgh train ooming West
that afternoon on the Ohio and Pennsylvania
Bond, arrived at Allianoe, the through baggage
car for Cleveland was switched off upon a side
traok aB uaoal. A man in the employ of the
Pittsburgh company named Patriok , who
was standing on the side traok, was struck down
and run over by the car and killed instantly
He was a very honest and industrious man and
leaves a wife and two ohildren to suffer tho be
reavement.
Another. —A man at work on the repairs of
the bridge of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Rail
road, twenty five miles east of Alienee, was
killed by the falling ot a piece of timber yester
day morning. We were unable to learn his name.
—•Cleveland Plaindeahr, 2d.
Fibb Alarm.— Tho alarm of fire this morn
ing, about five o’olook, came very nigh proving
a very destrnotive affair. The fire originated In
the third story of a brick house in the Diamond,
owned by Mrs. Hugh D. King, and occupied by
Mr. Hern as a tin shop and dwelling house. A
box of oliarooal, for the use of the workmen,
was kept in the third story, and it is supposed
that a spark from one of the furnaoes bad fallen
into it last evening, whioh ignited the ooal and
Bet fire to the box containing it. The damage
dona to the machinery is considerable, which is
covered by insuranos. In tho second story tho
only damage done to the furniture was from the
water. Little or no barm was done to the tin
stsre on the first floor. Through tho prompt no
tion of the firemen, the building was saved from
the devouring element.— Yeelerday’e Fintet.
Six Children Poisoned—Three or them
Dead. —Wo learn from Mr. S. B. Shiluto, at
Condor, Washington county. Pa , that the six
children of Alex. Plots, residing near Burgets
town, wore bo badly poisoned on Thursday, the
26th nlt. ( that three of them died. They bad
gone out into the fields and gathered what they
suppo&ed were mushroone, which were dressed
and oooked by their littlo sister, when all six
partook of them freely. They Boon after be
came deathly sick, when a Doctor was seat for,
but he could only care three of the sufferers. It
appears that instead of mushroons they had
gathered a poisonous fungi which grows around
old loga and stamps, and whioh are known as
toadstools. This is the statement wo have re*
ceived.
Thb Plaob to Qet Your Monet Back —There
are several.places in Pittsburgh where you get
your money back. For instanoc, at the office of
the Morning Po4t , where, if one invests a V for
a year’s subscription, ho is never heard to repent
the outlay ; or, if he pots the same amount into
a hat at Morgan & Co.’s, Wood street, near the
new Presbyterian Cburoh. However, Morgan &
Co., unlike onrsulves, will suit the sise of any
man’s purse, if be don’t want to bay a five dol
lar hat. They have them for $2.60, and very
good ones they aro. Co and see for yonrselves
Charged with Riot. —George Blumenskine
made information before Mayor Vote on Friday
eveni> e, against James Mnllen and others, for
acting in a riotous and disorderly manoer, in
the displaying of knives, throwing stones, as
saulting said deponent, and plaeiog his family
and the neighborhood in great fear. MnlleD
was arrested by offioer Frost and committed in
default of $lOOO bail. Subsequently Mullen
Was token out and brought before his Honor,
Who admitted him to bail in $6OO.
Committed Suicide. —A German, name un
known, deliberately committed suicide yesterday,
by walking into the Allegheny river, immediate
ly below the Aqaeduct. He was found about
half an hour afterwards, and taken from the
water. Ho had on a gray sack coat and black
oloth cap. The body can be seen any time be
fore 2 o’clock this day, at Garber’s, on Fifth st
The Coroner held an inquest, but no further
facts were elioited.
American Mass Meeting —Tho Amerloon
party held a mass meeting to-night in front of
the American Hotel. This is tho first open
meeting, and consequently a good deal of cu
rioaity will be felt to know who aro Know
Nothings and who are not; although for the
very reason named It will bo hardly fair to claim
all as belonging to the party who are present to
night. Tho meeting will oommooce at early
lantern light.
Recovering —The friends of Charley Childs,
Baggage Master on the Pittsburgh Railroad, who
was nearly killed, by tho accident about ten days
days ago at Enon Valley, will be glad to learn
that ho is improving rapidly and will probably
recover. He was so badly injured in the bead
and bones of hia arms bo fraotured that it was
at one time supposed that he could not survive.
The receipts for the month of July at the
office of the Pennsylvania Central Railroad, in
thts city, amounted to within a fraction of $22,-
000 for passengers alone. Dorlng tho cor
responding month of last year tho receipts
amounted to $19,482 28—showing an inorease
of $2,667 77.
Thb place to get an elegant outfit U at Arnold
& Son’s, on Market Btreet, near Fourth. Wo
have scon several handsome young men recent
ly dressed out from this establishment, and aro
of the opinion they felt all the better for their
clothes.
Job Pentlabd’b Cibous will exhibit to-day,
afternoon and evening, in Allegheny City. On
Monday night the exhibitions will commence on
tho American Hotel lot, and opntinue_.for one
vreek. This company is a good one, and Joe is
“seme puukina” as a clown.
Ws would invite attention to the sale of valu
able building lots, in South Pittsburgh, at 3
o’clock this afternoon, on tho premises, by P. M.

Explosion of * Powder Mill*
WnjflHQSOH', August 3.—'Tbs drain* houso st Mr. Ga*
reached powder works, Eden Park, in tho vicinity of this
city, was blown np shortly before 8 o’clock this morning.
It contained about out and a half tons of powder. The 4l*
plosion was tremendous, and broke a largo quantity of
glass in dwellings in the lower part of the dty. It had
boen In operation for forty years without accident, and was
considered to be the safest house embraced In the works.
All the workmen connected with its operations were killed
at once. They were blown to atoms, and the fragments of
their bodies were found at various distances from 60 to 200
yards. There were three Frenchmen engaged In the drying
boose, nami d Eugene Perene, Joseph Dnplano and Francis
Fisher, a d & boy named John Pugh. The house was lite
rally blown away; not a vestige remaining.
The explosion of the drying house caused a mill to ex
plode, which contained about 1,400 lbs.—less than It usual
ly contains. The engineer says there were three separate
explosions iu this mill. To those at a distance It seemed
like a single prolonged explosion
The trees around the drying house were blown up by the
roots, and the fields were literally covered with fragments
of wood, cinders, and the remains of the victims. One or
two horses were killed. Another man is said to have been
killed, but this seems doubtfoL
Mr. G&rescbe says the explosion must have been caused
by one of the Frenchmen who worked in the packing room
being addicted to smoking. Mr. G. had cautioned him two
weeks previous, and told him to quit the premises or give
up his pipe. Mr. G. supposed be had abandoned the prac
tice.
The steamboat Mlantonoml was run into last night below
‘he Navy Yard, by the tow-boat Spy. when returning from
an excursion with 160 passengers. Bhe was run ashore and
thtf'passengera were saved. The boat has since been taken
on the sectional dock for repairs.
