PUBLISHED DAILY, BY GILLMORE & MONTGOMERY, AT THE “ POST BUILDINGS,” CORNER OF FIFTH AND WOOD - 'STREETS, AT $O,OO PER ANNUM, OB $6,00 WHEN- PAID STRICTLY IN ADVANCE.
VOLUME XIII.
DAILY MORNING TOST.
SATURDAY MORNING:
John Randolph of Roanoke.
Sitting one day opposite a gentleman at
a hotol dinner table in Richmond, ho ob
served that he was eating one pf those lux
urious soft crabs of that region, and that,
us was the custom of the hotel, a glass of
milk had been placed near his plate, look
ing up from his own, he naid ; in a thin,
piping voice ;
That’s a singular dish of yours, sir,
very singular; crabs and. milk I Juba,
bring me a bowl of milk, and crumble some
crabs in it l”
At the same hotel, he said to a waiter,
in the temporary absence of Juba, hand
ing to him at the same timo his cup and
saucer;
‘‘Take that away—change it.”
“ What do you want, Mr. Randolph ?”
'•asked the waiter respectfully, ‘‘Do you
want coffee or tea?”
‘- If that stuff is tea,” said he, “bring
me coffee ; if it is coffee bring me tea ; 1
want a change.”
Most readers have heard, perhaps, of his
reply to a well known and highly respect
able gentlemen of the South, who introdu
ced hinself to him while standing and con
versing with some friends, with—
“ 1 should be pleased to make the ac
quaintance of so distinguished a public
servant as Mr. Randolph. 1 am from the
city of Baltimore—my name is Blunt.
“Blunt, eh {’’replied Mr. Randolph, “I
should think so, sir;” and he deigned him
no further notice.
Equally familiar to many, it may be,
will be found his reply to a gentleman who
rather forced himself upon Mr. Randolph's
notice, while engaged in conversation with
others, in a hotel in Virginia,
“ I have had the the pleasure, Mr. Ran
dolph, recently of pissing your house.’’
“ l am glad of it;’’ said Mr. Randolph ;
“i hope you will always do it, sir."
On one occasional Washington, a brother
member of Congress was enlightening Mr.
Randolph as to the manner of “ shopping”
at the capital.
“ The merchants,” said he, “ have two
prices—an ‘asking price,' and a ‘taking
(.rice.’ I used to send my wife to make
all the purchases for the lumily, by which
we made a saving of fifteen to twenty gcr
cent."
“ 1 had rather my wife,” said Randolph,
bitterly, “should make a living in any oilier
wav but one than that!”
Being a confirmed old bachelor, the re
mark was no less comical than severe.
Scarcely anything more sharactcristic of
Mr. Handolph is recorded of him in any cl
his biographies, than in the following inci
dent, which occurred on the morning ho
lie was to leave for England, on his lasi
visit to that country. The steamer is
waiting to convey passengers when his
friend calls upon him.
“ .Mr. Randolph,” he says, “in the name
of Heaven what is the matter! Do you
snow that it is nearly ten o’clock, and that
the steamboat watts tor nobody f Why,
you are not oven dressed.
“ 1 can’t help it, sir,” replied he, “ I’m
all confusion this morning, everything
goes wrong ; even my memory has gone
u woo! gathering. 1 am just writing n
farewell address to iny constituents, and
I’ve forgotten the exact words of a quota
tion from the Bible, which 1 wont to use,
and as 1 quote correctly, cannot close my
letter until 1 find the passage; but, strange
to say, 1 forgot both the chapter and verse.
1 never was in fault before, sir. What
shall I do
‘ Do you remember any part of the quo
tation?” asked his friend, “perhaps I can
assi.-t you with the rest.”
“ It begins,” said he, “with how have i
ioved thee, oh—, but for the life of me. 1
can’t recollect the next words. Oh, my
head 1 There, do you take the Bible and
run over that page while 1 am writing the
remainder of my addiess.”
“ My dear sir,” was the reply,“you have
no time to do this now; let us lake the let.
ter, Bible and alt on board the steamer,
where you will have enough time to finjj
the passage you want, before we reach the
packet.”
After a great deal of hesitation and re
luctance, and after much expostulation, the
proposition was agreed to.
A rather cruel lest of the affection of his
servant John was tried on the ocosion re
fered to. John had in some way offend
ed his master that morning, and, as he
waspreparing the trunks, Mr. Randolph
said to him :
“Finish that trunk at once, John, and
take it down to tho steamboat, and on
your return, take.passage in tho Philadel
phia; call on Mr——, in Arch street,
and tell him that I have sailed; then go to
Baltimore, call on Mr. in Monu
ment Place and say that I shall write to
him from London; thence proceed to Wash
ington, pack up the trunks at my lodging,
take them with you to Roanoke, ana re
port yourself to my overseer.”
After a pause,, ho added, in sarcastic
tone:
“ But you need not obey tbcni, unless
you choose to do so. You fean.jf you pre
fer it, when you arrive in Philadelphia,
callon the Manumission Society, and they
will make you free; and I shall never look
after you. Do you hear, Bir?’’
This unjust aspersion of John’s love, j
was too much for the! faithful , follow; his
cheek swelled, his lips quivered, his eyes
filled, and he replied in great agitation :
“ Massa John, this is too hard I I don’t:
deserve it. You know I love you better
than any body else, and you know yod will
find me atßoanoko when you come back.”
“I felt my blood rising,” said Mr.' Ban
dolph'a friend, and I could not avoidsayirig:
“Well Mr. l:could nothave
believed this, if l’had not senn it. ! 1
thought you had more compassion foryour
slaves, surely you are unjust in this case;
you have punished him severely jenpugh
by leaving him behind you, without hprU
ing his feelings. “You have imade the
poor fellow cry, Mr. Randolph.”
“ What?” said he with true emotion,
“does he shed tears?"
“ He does,” I replied, “and you see them
yourself.”
“Then,” said Mr. Ran dolph, “ha shall
go with me. John take down yottr; bag
gage, and let us forget what haßpaased.T
“I was irritated, sir,” I ie added,.turninfr
to me, “and F thank you for the rebufte.”
Thus ended thesingultur scene -between
Randolph andjhis servant. Johninstahtly
brightened fohgot his tfmstor’s
anger-—and, in a very fow momepts, W 4»
on his way to the boat, pprfectly happy.

[From the Newark Dally Advertiser }
A SOUTH SEA STORY.
There is not a little of romantic interest
in an account which has been given lately,
in some of the papers, of the visit to this
country of a daughter of one of the native
chiefsof the Marquesas Islands. There is
a small group in the Pacific, about nine
degrees south of the Equator, and some
four thousand west of Peru. Some fifteen
yearn ago a company of sailors from a
whaling ship put off in pursuit of a whale,
and while engaged in the capture lost sight
of their vessel. After w ,iting ns long ns
they dared, to be picked up, they were
compelled to direct their course to the
nearest land. This was the Marquesas Is
lands.
::::::::AUGUBT 4.
The reputation of the Islanders was bad,
but even at the risk of being eaten by the
savages, they were compelled by the cer
tainty of death if they did not, to land.
Contrary to their expectation, they were
kindly received, and for nine months en
tertained by the natives, who showed ev
ery disposition to have them remain per
manently. They, however, kept n contin
ual watch for parsing vessels. One day a
ship was described in the offing. Tho
man on the look-out on a neighboring
mountain, gave tho signal to bis compan
ions below. In a paroxysim of joy they
rushed to the beach, and hastly launching
their boat they leaped in. The nulives at
first, taken by surprise, did not interfere
but soon discovering their iatentions, on
deavored to prevent their leaving. There
seemed no alternative but to push off on
the moment. So, without waiting for their
shipmate, who was making his way down
from his station, they plied the oar and
were soon far on on their way, and were
seen no more.
Mills, for that was the name of the do
serted sailorpeeing all hope of escape taken
away, though at first overwhelmed with
disappointment, soon concluded to make
the best of a hard case, and if possible to
render what was a forced now a willing
and pleasant home. In the chiefs family,
to which ho had from tho first been taken,
he found many opportunities of Icing use
fol to the islanders, and he soon became a
favorite. The chief had on only daughter,
a sprightly girl ol some twelve or fourteen
summers, with whom Mills became nic.ro
than n favorite After five years resi
dence ho became her huslnnd.
Not long after their marring-- the chief
died, nod Mills, who had now acquired
great influence, became a sort of a regent,
his wife being, according to heiediury
usage, chief. In this capacity ho did what
he could to foster civilization, and hn efi
forts largely succeeded Cannibalism was
abandoned, polygoiuy abolished, ami the
softened intercotiso of civiliz-.-d society
gradually look the place o( lii-j old barbar
ism. Quite o flourishing trade sprung up
with tie- ships which have been em.-nu ra
ged to stop them.
Mr. Mills became exceedingly nnxitms
that Christian ic.struc.ion, such us he could
not give, should bo imparled to tho na
tives. For this purpaio be wrote to the
Sandwich Islands for teachers. (.jet-
ting no answer, he resolved to go
after them himself- So leaving his
child, a boy about three years old. who
had now becomo chief, and taking with
him his wife nnd vrhat property h<- had,
(sonii fifteen hundred do'lnrs.) he went
first to Australia, then to Van thrman's
Laud, then to New Zealand, seeking some
ona who would he willing to go bark wub
h-m but m vain, ns none could be found
By un nrridenl he was persuaded to visit
America, und he landed nt Salem Ins; Or
lober, wth means almost exhnusled. The
story is a long one, of his subsequent dis
appointments and trials. During the lost
Waiter, with a sick wife, and an infant son,
(horn in New York) he suffor.-d much,
and ultermany fruitless attempts uns about
to give over iti despair the design of pro
curing a mnn to return with him There
did not seem one in all the land who to
ready to go, and none who were wiling to
sond.
Just as he was bidding farewell to friends
who had assisted him, one of the providen
ces—they cannot bo called accidents —
threw in his way a recent graduate of the
Union Seminary in New York, As soon
almost as Mills’ statement came to his ears
he offered to go with him. They are now
just on the eve of their departure from tho
country.
These statements, which we have receiv-
ed from Mr. Mills himself, nro confirmed
(y tho most reliable authority. The
whole story, ol which we have given but
a rapid outline, is one of more than ordina
ry interest. Wo should suppo3o that the
missionary societies hnvo rarely found so
favorable an opportunity of planting a
mission among a heathen people ns this
present.
A distinguished public speaker not long
since illustrated, in a conversation with us,
the singular wunt of acquaintance in cer
tain localities with Scriptural subjects and
phraseology, by the anecdote wo subjoin.
If the extreme ignorance of the hero did
not relieve him from all imputation of the
sort, he.would bo considered a coarse blas
phemer ; but our informant, who vouches
for the facts, on personal knowledge, that
the case wu nothing more nor less than
an exemplification of the simplicity which
•'charaolerises soma of the backwoods coun
ties of Tennessee,
It seems that an adventurous so it-of the
State mentioned, born and nurtured among
the,.-mountains, went down to the city of
Memphis to.“ ; seek his.fqrtune.” He found
insfekd a complaint which the Mississippi
water not unfrequently generates, and
which, whether it finds speedy termination
in the cramps of cholera, or whether is
gradually saps life in the chronic form, it
always to bedreaded. It was in this latter
shape that poorßagley “picked it up,”
and month after month it tugged at his vi
alsf reducing him day by day, until at
length he was butihie outline of n man, a
mere peripatetic .skeleton.
A worthy minister marked the poor fel
low, and seeing that the king of terrors had
“ spotted” him, determined to call on him
and offer spiritual consolation. It never
occurred to him that the ears of any one
born in aChristian country could be entire
ly unfamiliar with the verbiage by which
spintiftjiisubjects aiq: icdmrriQbly hp prone h
ed. . He, therefdre, ailer some kiqd inqut
ries abdut the; ravages the disease; was ac
complishing in.Bagley’s system broached
.the important topio somewhat thus:
i “My dear Mr. Bagley, in view of your
< relations with this life, bow do you feel?”
“ D-—d sick” was the prompt reply.

“ Don’t swear, my poor friend,” said the
parson, “and let me earnestly ask you if
you ever thmk of your latter end.”
“ Lord !” said Bagley, “ I ain’t thought
on nothing else for mor’n three months.”
“ Not, I’m afraid, in the right way, Mr.
Bagley, I beg you to pause and refleot 1
It is time you began to wrestle with the
Lord!”
The sick man looked down at the miser
able calfless, poker legs, extending before
him, and with nn ineffable expression of
amusement in his countenance, exclaimed.
“ Rastle with the Lord 1 What, with
them ere legs ! ” —pointing to his own—
“ Why, parson, He’d flirt me into h—the

The reoord in the case does not disclose
whether the parson continued his efforts
on so obtuse an intellect; but we think the
inference very fair that so tough a custo
mer survived even the “ chronic Missismp
