FRIDAY MORNING
DISAPPOINTMENTS OF GENIUS.
[CONOLIIED.I
" Friend, you must leave- all this ; yon
have a decided vocation L must admit, but
before attempting to practice, it is necess
ary to study the theory P'
Charles did not reply, and it was with
difficulty be restrained his emotion.
" I see." said the machinist, " that my
words afflict you, because to Stildy one
needs time and money ; but do not be die
cou raged ; I have been as poor and help
less as you, and I fOund aid ; I will eatts
fy the debts you have contracted with
others, and from this time forward you
shall live with me; I will give you particu
lar instructions, and after some time you
will be able to do some work which will of
ford you, if not a fortune, at least the
means of living comfortably."
At the end of the year Charles had made
great progress, and thanks to his patron,
he was as learned in theory its he was in
genious and confident in practice. But
his misfortunes were not over yet; his
employers had'heard of a- new invention
which had been perfected in America, of
which they were in great need; they there
fore came to the conclusion that they
would despatch the patron_ of Charles to
examine it, and if he approved -of it, to
purchase one of the machines with the priv
ilege of construction. The friend of Char
les accordingly set out-with the intention
of returning soon, but a• thousand unfore
seen circumstances - prolonged his absence.
During this time Charles had consumed all
his money,, and though his patron did not
return, he would not apply to any one else
for succor, but gave his time, day and
night, to the constrnction of a new mill.
Shut up in a miserable hut, he labored
on; for days he had not tasted food, he
was totally without fire; tormented by the
pangs of hunger, shivering . with cold, his
bead ready to burst with pain, on the verge
&despair, he drowned his natural pride,
caught a pen, and wrote;
Haman I—l am dyingwith want ; sus
tain me for but a few days, and I will ac
complish my project, achieve a fortune and
illustrate our name. Have compassion
then on thy brother, and spare thyself the
pangs of remorse."
The answer;
" Did I not tell the years ago that thy
visionary projects would, be the cause of
thy ruin? My father was right
_when • he
said you would do no good; and now that
his predictions have been -verified I will,
take care not to link myself with you, so
that in your fall you will not' drag
'me down also."
" My God ! exclaithed Charles as he
read the letter, "I have now no resource
but to die - or ask alms, and as I have not ,
the courage to beg, why then I -must die;
saying which, he threw himself on his
miserable bed and burst into an agony of
grief.
After a storm comes a calm; and after a
chart time Charles sunk into' a quiet slued;
ber. He slept for nearly an hour, when,
all at once he awoke, sprang from his bed
and fell upon his knees, exclaiming,
" Thanks! 0, Lord, thanks ! Than halt
had compassion on my misfortunes and the
trials to which I have been subjected, and
now thou hest rewarded me by converting
my crown of thorns into a crown of laurels!
thanks 1 0, Lord, thanks !"
He then drew near the table on which
lay his implement of work, and putting it
to test, joyfully discovered that during his
dream he had really found the solution of
of a problem, over which he had pored in
vein for nearly a month, and which was '
the only thing he lacked to complete his
model.
lie new felt happy, and with the great
est confidence in his success, ho gave to
the public the result of his labors
His model was examined by various
scientific persons, who all coincided that
it was truly a valuable invention, and des.
erring otall the rights of talent, which was
immediately granted Charles, together
with a handsome sum at money, as a re
compense for his ingenuity and persever
ance.
His fame spread rapidly that it soon
reached the ears of his plodding brother,,
whose
whose envy was very great, but he was
destined to undergo a still greater inortifi
cation. There were many mills in the
valley of Ontoneda, and the proprietor of
one of them, rather more intelligent than
Louis, procured a mill constructed accord
to the new system, and placed it close by
that of Loui-, who, persevering in his-or
iginal routine lost, first patronage, and theta
all that he had , :squired during his pros
pergus days.
Charles had located himself in a distant
valley, and was now prosperous and happy.
Beheld no correspondence with his brother,
and consequently was -much astonished
when he heard from travelers the news of
his brother having been reduced to over''
ty. Isere, then, was a rare opportunity for
revenge for all he had suffered in cowrie_
qnenee of his brother's avariciousness
But the n..ble nature of :Merles prevailed,
and he sent word to hisbrotherthatif he
chose to accept of it, he would furnish hint
with one of his mills, and lend him 'sue-"
cient money to start again. ,
But the - news arrived too late. Louis,-
in opulence, had never succored his indi
gent neighbors,U and now that he - was itc
need, none of them would aid _him., With
no energy to combat against tile trials of
the world, and despised by all who knew
him, the miserable man shut himself up in
a lonely but and laid'down to die.
At first people did nut seem to notice
his absence, but when the news tremble
brother arrived, he was nowhere to be
found.' - •
They searched around - , and finding -a
hovel securely, closed, which - they had sup
posed to be uninhabited, they .coacluded Lai
must be there: bursting open 'the door-they
beheld the wretches 'man stretched upon ,
the cold, damp ground. At. their entrance
ho with great difficulty sat up, and turning'
his pale, haggard countenance towards ,
them, he faintly demanded why they had
come to molest him.
They communicated hr,:is brother's Ines- I
sage; as they proceeded, a flush of shame
rushed to his face, then retired, leaving it,
if possible, still paler 1h: an before; he en
deavored to -speak, but exhausted nature
could hear no more; aft er a few convulsive
