DAILY MORNING POST•
WEDNESDAY MORNING
DISAPPOINTMENTS OF GENIUS
In the valley of Ontoneda there lived a
miller and his wife, who had two sons,
Louirf and Charles. Louis, the elder, was
below the middle height, and had an awk
ward personal appearance; he was, besides,
ignorant and selfish. As he never mani
fested any desire to learn, his father kept
him working in the mill, in consequence
of which he understood the method of
working it very well ; yet he learned with
great difficulty; and as he was not endow
ed with a great deal of energy, he des
paired at the slightest obstacle. He might
be called a good workman, but a workman
like all who had preceded him; he might,
make a good miller, but it would be a mil
ler like his father, because he never could ,
aspire to anything higher..
Charles was a character entirely oppo
site,
and presented a striking contrast to•!
his elder brother. He was tall and ele
gantly made—intelligent and generous.
Ho had a great passion for investigating
all kinds of mechanism, and had great
confidence in his powers of imitating or
even improving them. But he was not al
ways succeseiel in he: improvements, and
he had ceeleed ream; disappointments,
and put Lis fat:lmes mill out of order so
often that im lied &awn down upon him
self the anger and contempt both of his
father and brother.
The miller and his wife were very fond
of their elder son, becouse he was the elder:
and as it was the custom among the nobles
of the country to leave their possessions to
the first born, they considered it perfectly
just that they should leave the mill, in
which their whole fortune consisted, to
their eldest son.
"Yes," said they, "Louie shall inherit
us; for he is a prudent, economical boy,
and under his management the affairs of
the mill will prosper.; as for the other he
is a d rack-brained fellowe'and were we to
leave the mill to him, he, with his inven
tions-and improvements, arrangments and
disarrangements, would finish by Conver
ting it into a pile of rubbish. If we were
to make a miller of him, when he had
learned it, he would wish to travel, expect
ing to return a lord or a millionare. Oh,
by all means, Louis shall inherit us."
Ah I In this they did like many other
parents, who, instead of saying, "we have
a son of an ardent and exalted imagination,
who has need of the cares of a family to
calm him; we will keep him by our sidee l
and watch over him with a vigilant eye :
we have another son, cold, calm, prudent
and calculating--we will leave him at lib
erty to go where he pleases; he will be
contented with the world as he finds it,"
Ah! instead of acting thus, perhaps they
are laying the foundation for a life of un
happiness ; because a fortune is not acquir
ed without great risks, and genius tr . '.
umphs only after a thousand disappoint
ments, the rudest trials, and most painful
privations, which, if possible a parent
should always guard against.
Our miller and his wife did not think
thus, and they kept Louis with them, who,
without carine n to inquire how his father's
mill reduced the grain into flour, was con
tented with knowing that so many sacks of
grain, ground, produced so much flour for
the miller—and if his father, something
more intelligent, had proposed to him a
new method, a more delicate mechanism,
a system of wheels more powerful or efli
cacius, he would have laughed at the idea
as mere visionary.
Charles now left, to himself began form
ing a thousand projects, and occupied the
greater part of his time in making little
mills, now to be propelled by wind, now
by water, which, to tell the truth, did not
work very well, and which brought upon,
him so many correct ones, that one day he
formed the resolution, that as he had noth
ing to expect from his father, he would
try his fortune elsewhere; so lie took leave
of his teacher, and received the parental
benediction, and provided with a light
equipage and a little money, he turned his
steps toward the city of Santander.
As soon as he arrived there he endeav
ored to obtain employment; but even when
his money was all gone he had found no
work. "All ! "sr.i•l he, "it is very hard if
one creme Feel enees,...yment, even when
they are _k and then think
ing of his ,le.••.:;.-e mei of his parents, he
added, "Oh '.efe• did not my father give
me a part in the mill; my brother is a
good workman, and can grind grain-rery
well; I could repair the mill, and without
doubt make many improvements in it; and
living thus. we might have prospered and
been happy."
About this time his father, who found 1
himself getting old, installed ouis in full
possession and management of the mill,
and the young miller, with little work .and
less trouble, together with his natured
economy, continued to prosper, and irt
time, grew to be one of the richest persons •
in the valley of Ontoneda.
" Well," said the old miller, " you see
wife how Louis prospers: did not we do
well in leaving the mill to him?"
" All ! who knows what the Lord has in
store for poor Charles," said the good wo
man,whose parental:affection was increased
by the absence of her son.
" Let him make out the best he can," re
sponded her husband ; " it is but right that
such young gentlemen should eat the bread
of labor, that they may learn how to live."
Our poor exile would no doubt have been
glad to have bread of any kind, for he now

For some time his employers found no
