The Convention then adjourned until after -dinner Upon assembling at half.paet I o'clock, Capt. Short moved that a committee of flee be appointed to draft resolutions. Mr. B T. C. Morgan amended by offering the following: That it is desirable that complete harmony of action should exist amongst all who asknowledge as their ruling principle tit. heti American and Republican doctrine, that ‘•Ameri cans shall rule Americans." That this Conven tion stand adjourned to meet upon the call of the Executive Committee to be now elected. The gentleman supported these resolutions by a few remarks, in which ho gave his reasons for -offering them. He said the American party wee - Plea of principle, and notwithstanding the many defeeeits they had sustained on different 0.002- . Wong, abided by their great principles, in the eene e eious hope that telecom would nitl tnately res t e/t. This was realised in ISM, when another branch of the American party came to the rosette of the field guard," and they elected fen; out of hire of the county offi cers, and nearly the whole of the Assembly ticket. Now, there ere in reality only two par ties in Allegheny county—the American and Democratic—and if notedng should bo done to divide the former, it would be again victorions at the next eleotlon. The selection of candi dates at the present time, the speaker feared, would induce so deplorable a result, and he therefore hoped it would he postponed. Mr. Burt, of Birmingham, suggested the fol. lowing as an amendment to the amendment: Resolved, That it is inexpedient at this time, to Rieke nominations for county °Mom Resolved, That a committee consisting of sev en members of this convention to be chosen by ballot or marking, be appointed, whose duty it shall be to canes a nomination to be made by direct vote of the members of the party, come time between the 10th of September next, and the Bret of October followiege and that they make proper provision for the taking said vote, Resolved, That said committee shall take all proper methods for uniting and harmonising all the different branches of the American Party. On the presentation of these resolutione, eon• •Iderable contusion °named/ and about one half the members of the convention jumped upon their feet, each endeavoring to speak at once. Mr. Short, of Manchester, at last got the floor, and came out strong against the amend meats. fie said the evident design to be ac complished, was to place the making of the nominations in the hands of were workers Last fall the American party voted for half a dozen candidates, made for them ty somebody, he didn't know who, and he wouldn't do it again. The nominations of the party must be open. This convention had been called for that purpose, 4ind it was the duty of its members to attend to It. Here again the wildest excitement and confo• Wen occurred. Half a dozen on the door at once, and the balance of the Convention calling them to order. Mr. Powell, of Allegheny, not withstanding the noise, at last managed to mat e himself'heard, and went on to make a very flow ery speech; but whether he was apoaking on the Smendosente, or only for his own amusement, we couldn't say, as the only things we heard were "American eagle," "Americans rule Amer. "Star-spangled banner," repeated very often. Repeated calls for the question were made, and Use matter was finally settled, amidst the greatest tumult, by indefinitely postponing the original resolution, amendments and all When quiet bad comparatively ensued, Mr. Patterson, of Sharpsburg, arose and offered a series of resolutions, defining the position of the American party on varioun subjects, and offering a plan by which ho thought the nominations Could be made in a manner satiefaasory to both branches of the party. He supported hie reso !ldiome in a speech of considerable length ; and fit iticonclusion, a motion was made to adopt theM Section by section. Thie created another hubbub, and everybody -tried to speak at once. Finally, Mr. Glass, of Allegheny, made himself heard, and moved an adjournment, which was carried with a large majority. This summary breaking up of the Convention did not seem to please that portion which stood by the old landmarks, and a Delegate jumped Up and moved .that all those in favor of an open organization-proceed to the American Hall, on -hearth stoeet, and re-organize. T :Nis proposition was hailed with a faint cheer, an d a gent a dozen Delegates started off, followed shortly a fter by nearly the balance of the Con vention. A n ti e d a t:the Hall, Mr. Powell, of Allegheny, Was requested .te take the chair, and called the meeting to order. Mr. Patterson, %.‘bo seemed to be well primed With resolutions of all kinds, then offered the following for the adoption of the meeting: The primary object of the American Party is to preserve and perpetnote our free institutions. To guarantee the accomplishment of this, we bold— let. That the keeping of those institutions' Shall be la the had _only of these who have been reared under their influence: that Ameri eatte shall rale America. 2el.
