Speaking of tho prospects of ' election, tho I t"o Slate:num, present aspect .of, faaire the advantage of all other Tart been damaged, it is true, and 1 _ ate'recovery, in the north, but they are the on. ly men occupying a position at all national in character. " In more reepeots than ono the above reluctant confession of the Now Hampehire SMLUStert is literally and undeniably true. The:Democracy have the advantage, of all other parties--and they are the only one occupying a position at all National in character. Of these facto we needed no confessions, or assurances, from our opponents, to convince us ; nor shalt we stand in need of the smallest imaginable assis tance, to enable its to convince a vast majcrity of the Amerleasspeople that it is so. Therein, however, one assertion in the above acknowledgement which needs correction. It is said' the Democratic party hos been. "damaged beyond immediate recovery." This is the LI- • lacy which generally prevails among our oppo nents. But what damage has the Nnioersey sustained Y It is beyond question that the party is numerically as strong to day as it ever has been. It has sustained defeats, to be sure tint misfortunes of- that. hind, almost without eqcep tion, aro referable—not to a diminutten of strength on our part, but to an unprincipled and disgraceful combination of all the factions and fag ends of the enemies of Democracy. That combination, the formation of which was equivalent to a thousand defeats, the necessity for which was and is an unwritten acknowledge ment of the weakness of all the parties that have ever-opposed us, is composed of materials so Incongruous, not to say positively antagonis tic, that it will as certainly dy apart. as simile follow their causes. The combination may sur vive a hundred defeats, but its first victory i 3 sure to be its destruction. Were the demago gues and fanatics who eesort to anch expedi ents to secure the objects of a low, because net fish ambition, disposed to study the true philoe ophy of politics, they might soon learn that the "damage" sustained by the Demoeracy of this nation is neither more or leen than a' presage of future triumphs. And were they moderately wise, instead of gloating over the imaginary defeat and prostration of the Democratic party, or shedding tears of affected commiseration over its grave, they would be malting their peace with their God and indignant men—for their departure is at hand. Good! Our enemies being the judges, and our calumniators the interperfers of the signs of the times, the Democracy aro at this moment " the only men occupying a position at all na tionoal incharaoter. " Yea, verily. And, what is more and better still, such is our envaible po sition, such the prieciplcs by us ennneints.i, such the landmanks by which we are Guided, and such the truthfulness of our time honored creed, that no party or faction can, for any great length of -time, enocesafully oppose us. By a siugli lar fatality every move made by our enemies is a virtual endorsement of the soundness of our policy, and an approximation towards the ground which we occupy. We cannot go to them—they must and will come to us. Let, them comp. It is never too late to repent.
