TLIE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION
The Damoctatio ritate Convention, to nominate
a candidate for Canal Commissioner for tho on,
cuing Fall election, 131130t9 tomorrow in Harris
burg, Ina from the indications it is evident
there will be a isrge attendance. The great
patty of the people was defeated last year by a
juggle—by a combination of all the isms and
factions ; bat tide is an event not likely to occur
again.
The simple object of the Convention—which
meets on the natal day of our freedom—le to
mate a nomination for fora single office : this is
its legimitate duty. We hear intimations, how
ever, that an attempt will be made to go beyond
this, and that there will be an effort to forestall
public opinion on the Presidential question.
We have heard of no such design in the Western
,part of the State, and as the charge comes from
a single newspaper in the East, we cannot be
lieve there is any settled determination of the
kind. Such a move could be of no possible ad
vantage to any Presidential aspirant; it might,
on the contrary, do him conch harm ; and we
are certain it 'would ba of no hcriefit to the De
mocratic party at the nest election. All mob
action, therefore, is to be deprecated.
Thera aro several candidates for Canal Com
minium?, but only two prominent once, we be
lieve. These are William B. Campbell, Esq., of
• Allegheny, end Hon. Arnold Plummer, of Ve
.nottgo., They are both good min, and true
Democrats. With Mr. Campbell we are person
ally acquainted. He is a thorough business
man-one whom tho Commonwealth can confide
°her interests to with the perfect assurance they
ygibt_zealotnily looked after. His nomination
pill give unbounded' satisfaction in Allegheny

Sir Joseph PaxtO' Projectstl Rutiroad
Round Louden.
[From the. London Times.]
Muob interest has been eicited to-day by the
publication of the plan understood to have been
in preparation for eomealate e leyEir Joseph Pax
ton for effecting a new and thbreingh communi
cation between the city and the 'West'End,' and
its ultimate extenolon in the nature of itt boule
vard round London. The propeaal embraces a
carriage arcade of the 'same breadth ac the tran
eopt iu the old Crystal Palace, which was wider
than that of the present one, starting from, the
Mansion House toward gouthwark-bridge,
the ricer, running to - the Southwestern Railway
etatien, and thence again across the river neer
Bungerford-bridge to the Regent-dime —the
communication by this route being nearly the,
same in point of distance ac that by the Strand.
At the name time a lice of eimilar character
would breech from a point near the Southwest
ern Railway to the Houses of Parliament and
Victorie street by a bridge at Lambeth, and, as
at the back of the hounee on each aide atmoe
phonic [Mee of railway are to be constructed,
the transit between Belgravia and the Bank
would thus be reduced to about eight minutes,
and between the Bank and Charles-von, or the
Regent-circus, to about are er eii minutes.
This railway would bo at en elevation to enable
it to pees acmes the various streets which it
would Intersect without interfering with any of
tee casting road; and the eyetem would involve
a constant eneceenion of ezpreze treine as well
me of stopping trains at every half mile or base,
en arranged as to be perfectly nniselees. The
carriage-way of the arcade, it is contemplated,
should be closed against wagons, between nine
in the morning, and nine tit night, to insure the
facilities for quick passenger treat as well no
for inczeasing the attraction of the costly shops
on each side, and among the prominent recom
mendations of property on the, line would be
the protection afforded to all kinds of goods by
its element:tee% equable temperature, brightness
of light, and Immunity from weather as a prom
enade and drive In Summer and Winter. Tho
estimated toot of thin improvement, which Sir
Joseph Paeten considers would be the largest
thoroughfare in the world, and each as to make
London the most magnificent end convenient
city in exi, stenoit, 13 zell 300,00 f, and the calcu
lated returan from route and railway avenue are
.038,000, or between S and e per cent. To in
sure its cennpletion, however, in the beat manner
for the intereeta of the uetiet it i 3 contended
that the cc operation of (leveret-arat should be
obtained, and that this eheuld consist in a guar
antee of 4 per cent. interest for 0) pare, on
conditioet that a half of one per cent. should ho
Oct aside, annually to redeem the capital within
that period, and that all receipts above 4 per
oent. shoo! ho equally divided 'between the
State and the Company. Undor this it would
M pear that, if the property wore to yield the
anticipated reture of 5 per cent., the transaction
would reach in the nation receiving an annual
payment of mores than .f. - 2,060,1 1 00 for t - lf) years,
at.,l at the end of that time being put in the
poneeelou of the entire property without ever
having incurred the eepeediture of a grilling,
while the public would gain three free bridges
and the removal of delays and obetaclee which
have been estimated to coht an annual money
loss of upwards of a million sterling to the trade
of the kingdom. The ultimate extent:lee of the
undertaking as a boulevard encircling London,
and connecting all the railway station!, would
inn-eat:a the total mat to 1,14.000,000, but it is
~bvioue. that the grand point of bringing the
pity and the Went Led into rapid communication
etteetd he the first to commard attention, audit is
an advantageous feature of the plen that this
free from uncertainty, can ha ocean

SALTS-IC ID singular that this sub
stance, which is considered so delicate and re
freshing a perfume, should be prepared by chem
ical art from matters of most obnozione character
of the nasal organ; yet such is the fact. The prop
er and chemical term for smelling salt, is ammo
nia; it originally derived its name from the temple
of Jupiter Ammon, at Ammonia, in Lybia, a dis
trict of Egypt, in the neighborhood of which it
was first manufactured. In Egypt the chief fu
el is the dung of the camel ; and as - all the ani
mal substances yield a largo portion of ammonia,
there ie much of it in this substance ; hence the
Soot arising from its combustion ie impregna
ted with ammonia, from which it is abstracted.
In Europe, ammonia used to be made by distil
ling bones, horns, pearings of bides and other
animal matter from the tanners' and slaughter
houses; but latterly a cheaper source has been
discovered:namely, from the refuse of the menu
feature of coal gee. It is found that all plants
are coal (which is of vegetable origin) yield, by
distillation, from one to three per cent., of am•
monia. Many other substances come over with
the ammonia in the distilling apparatus, which
are horrible to smell, but which the chemist and
perfumer rectify, so as at last to produce that ea
quielte perfume which is carried by the ladies,
encased in crystal, gold and silver.

We hope Chat no one will bOSo . alli o y or indis
creet as to be' frightened at' the fact :that a few
canes of a disease' resembling Asiatic cholera,
and generally called cholera, have 4ceurred in
our midst. Thum la nothing like .w.k epidemic
dleeeze among us. The weather ha's by tome
been excessively hot and cold, and likiwise wet,
and such extremes, especially out of seasen, - are
certain to be unhealthy. Therefore; we are not
at alt surprised to hear of isolated cholera cases
in all directions in the town and in the count's',
the result of the weather, of indiseretion or nu•
usual exposure. There is nothing at whioh the
people need be at all alarmed, nothing that
errould prevent people from coming to town, (un
less it is the heat, which is becoming opprer,
sive.) We propose to deal with oar readers in
regard to eickness in- the city with -
the utmost
frankness.. We have long since dithovered that
to attempt to deceive people aa to,the state of
health in the city was a mbetakea, and mischo
vions idea, and if there is oholera hare, our
readers shall know the extent a its ravages.
Le quiet and prudent, but not over z oautious, and
all wilt be well.
