CORN IN Lontsrttam.—Oar dealers in corn,
like the wise men in Egypt, have been provident•
ly supplying themselves with corn during the
season, speculating, some may term it, and the
result is that there is a large stook on hand.
One dealer alone has 36,000 bushels in store, all
purchased In Indiana. This is equal to the en
tire estimated stock in the city, published last
week.—Louisrille Courier, 22d.
We hope the aforesaid speculators will be
compelled to keep it until next fall, when they
may possibly get forty cents per bushel for
what would have brought double that sum at
any time since last January. There is such a
thing as being too greedy. We have no doubt
there is a large quantity of breadstuffa locked
up in the same way in different parts of the
country ; but now that the success of the new
crop is secured beyond doubt, it will have to
come out. The high price of breadstuffs, and
the scarcity of money among farmers, (who are
really the most needy class since the almost to
tat failure of last year's crop,) will bring new
Flour into market much earlier than is usually
the ease. Indeed we would not be surprised to
ale it in snob abundance, from new Wheat, that
by the first of September, Flour had fallen
to Seven dollars per barrel, or even lower.
Tux RIGHT Smarr.—Wo observe a number of
our Democratic exchanges :deprecate any at

to meet on the 6th ofjely, to manufacture pub'
lle; opinion on the Precidential or any other
question. That body meets fora single and
epecitio purpose, and any transcending its legit
imate sphere will do little good, and may do a
:_jgcrosi deal_of harm to the-very-person or cause
It may be intended to aid. Let the people move
to the matter first—there is plenty of time for
it yet.

Nothing New.
The present fashionable Lady's Bonnet is not
a new conception, as some may suppose ; in•
deed it is a very old one, but, unlike wine, it is
none the better for age. Punch, in describing
what would probably be the next style of bon
net worn by ladies, gives a cut representing
that portion of their apparel supported on a
platter by a iacquey some two feet bellied
the head of the fair one who should wear it.
Even this idea seems to have been stolen, at
least it Was expressed before Punch was in ex.
istence ; for we find something very like it in re-
I dation to bonnets, in the Pittsburgh &airman
of 1825, " printed and published by J C. & P.
C. M. Andrews, Public Square, Pittsburgh."
It is an extract from the Camden Star, and is to
the following effect
Mr. Printer:—Meeting a young lady the
other day just as she was turning a corner of
the street, and seeing her entirely bare headed,
I was in pure commiaseration, on the point of
enquiring by what unlucky misfortune ebe had
been deprived of her hat and left thus uncover

I discovered to my utter amazement her hat

TEE PENNSYLVANIA RA/LROAD.—Bamors and
countcr•rumors have been very current, during
the last few days, concerning the purchase of
the cars and boats of several of the Philadelphia
and Pittsburgh transportation lines, by the
Pennsylvania Railroad Company. On the one
hand it has been alleged that the Comp ,ny have
become the owners of all the stook of D. Leech
& Co., Lewis & Butler, &e., and the notice
given by the latter, that they would receive no
more freight after the 10th inst., is said to be in
consequence of the sale and transfer. Other
city papers assert that no such arrangements has
been made between the parties, though we have
as yet seen no official or authorized denial. If
true, it would seriously Injure the public works,
and reduce the revenue of the Commonwealth.
The boats could be used upon some other canal,
and the care taken off the State road and placed
upon the Pennsylvania Railroad—and tins leave
i the works of the Commonwealth without the facil
ities for transportation. But as we understand
it, the charter of the Company does not permit
them to become the owners of transportation
lines, or to engage in any other business than
snob as is usnally allowed to similar companies;
and we have too much confidence In the sagacity
and integrity of the officers to think that they
would either violate their charter, or resort to
such means to build np their road and injure
shippers at the expense of the Commonwealth.

Too ANXIOUS, BY HALF —An amusing affair
happened, lately, between a coal dealer and a
ptirchaser. The latter was very anxious to see
that the former did not cheat him, so he (the
purchaser,) inspected the weighing of the coal
himself, and felt perfectly satisfied that he got
his full allowance, without any desire on the
part of the coal dealer to " shave." However,
while the coal wee weighing, the driver of the
team could not help laughing, aware, at the
time, that the porohaeer was particular about
his fell weight of opal. The purchaser, noticing
the laughing of the driver, asked him, when he
had received the ooal, what it was all about; ell
the driver told him: " Why," said he. " when
your coal was weighing, you were standing 071
the scales, and Wall weighed with it." "la it

bought myself, too."

A School Teacher Murdered by o Boy—
We learn from a gentleman rho was an eye
witness, the following particulars of a most her
riblo and tragical affair that cc•urred at Ponto
toc, Miss , on Monday last. It al pears that I
Mr. Brown, the principal of the male academy
at Pontotoc, had punished one of his pupils
about a week since. A brother of the boy that I
was whipped, by the name of Wray, made threats
against Mr. Brown for the aforesaid punishment,
to which but little attention was paid. On Mon
day, young Wray, a youth of some seventeen or
eighteen years old, took a position where Mr.
Brown would pass on his way home from school,
and waited until he came along, when Wray at
tacked him.
Toe two clinched, Brawn acting only in self
defence, and those who anw it thought it only to
be a scuflls between them, until they saw Brown
run a few yards, his hands upon his abdomen,
and fall down lifeless. While they were clinched
Wray had iritiloted two wounds upon Brown with
a large bowie knife, which killed him almost
instantly. The young man was arrested at once.
Ir. Brown was a man much respected, and
