TLIURSD:KY MORNINO
Is a gnat thing figuratively or literally—literal
ly in particular. Last Sunday night we had oc
casion to cross Congo Square, between nine and
ten o'clock. We fslt liko setting down and rest
ing awhile, but to cur surprise, 'were unable
to find a seat—every iron bench in the whole
equate having on it a lady and gentleman en
gaged in earnest and engrossing teto a-tote—each
couple being crow &el up at the one end of the
seat as if intending to leave room for others,
but really because the gentleman, in his magnet
ic ardor, had kept squeezing up to his duloina
until the arm of the seat was imperceptibly
rti3hed. Although we had a. perfect right to
take the vacant end of any gent, there was
moral atmosphere about each pair of occupants
—something in the affectionate collision of tulle
and duck and in the warm.proximityaf lip and
ear, that kept us at bay as effectually as a brace
of unmnzzled bull-dogs would have done. Oar
politeness was rather shabbily repaid with in
tense staring and a cessation of speech by each
couple as we passed, except ono. We soon got
out of that, and although we had only been-ex.
ercisiug oar right, felt, to a certain extent,
thankful that no watchman's rattle or cry of
step thief had proclaimed our intrusion.
The couple who did not, stge at us, caused
Its to stare at them as.loug as we were able; it
was impolite we know;' but We couldn't help it.
The gentleman reclined on a Slat, with his head
resting on the back. Whether the head rested
on the sharp iron back or ,was pillowed by
muslin with an arm in it, we, could not make
out, hut should suspect the latter, for the lady
leaned to the gentleman "liken kitten to a warm
jamb," and, with her white neck gleaming in
the gaslight, bent-her face over his, which woo
ed it as the peal might won the-overhanging
peach. As we passed we noticed the peach de
soending slowly and a moat distracting sound an
nounced its junction with•the pool. It was no
upstart, hoyden smack, noryete:girlish lip tinkle
without sound or flavor, but a full, genuine,
exerutiatiog "buss," compared with which we
should judge strawberriee anti cream to be en
tirely nauseous. "It had a dying fall "—aiad
might have caused a weaker individual than our
self to dying" on the spot. Our predomi
nant sensation was that the Sabbath had been
shockingly profaned, and as we hurried on we
heard the profanity repeated. more shockingly
than before. The lovers, it was plain had fur
-1 gotten that they were in a public square, peing
high in that rosy-colored heaven concerning
which the "poics" scribble so much.
- .
As the City Council has decided that Mr?
Godard has no right to go to heaven in his bal
loon on Sunday, in Congo square, we are of tho
opinion that it is equally unlawful for lovers
to desecrate the. settare 'and the day, or the
night of that, day, by going, io hct , .. , ,ea on the
wings of Cupid. We adopt the language of the
member of Council Who recently said--" I am
part owner of every public square in the city,
and have a right to enter them at all times with
-But hindrance;" and feeeing somewhat .' put
out" about the matter 'above narrated, call the
attention of the aforesaid member to it. We
would say nett/lug about it only a friend in
formed ns that the Cone() benches wore again
monopolized in the same way.
A. Locomotive Eleetrlp Telegraph, •
Science in Italy, strange as it may sound, ap
pears to bo actually outstripping " progress" ip
all other quarters. In the matter of electric
telegraphs, we find that they are there even
throwing the great telegraphic theatre of ths
United States of America in the shade. We
learn froixt the intelligent corrtspondent at Q.
non, of the Newark Advertiser, that one ehevn
tier Rouen. has invented, and had in May prac
tically demonstrated, a locomotive electric tele
graph. The problem was resolved under the
patronage of the Sardinian government, on the
railway between Turin and Montcaliori—a dis
tance of sixty miles—on the afternoon of the
4th of May, when, for the first time, a locomo
tive running at full speed repeatedly exchanged
messages with the station whence it started.
The writer says:
"The questions and answers were varied and
repeated during numerous trips, without a single
fault, and the inventor finally announced his
complete success to the , Minister of Public
Works at Turin, from a oar running, at the rate
of a mile in two minutes.
The ordinary wire line is thus seperseded
by this demonstration -of the practibility
*sing the common iron railway track as a con
ductor of electricity generated by a portable ma
chine. But, this simple and, ingenious invention
of Italian genius has a still mere important
beating. The writer asserts that, by means cf
it, not only may running trains be instantly ar•
rested by communications from the stations, at
whatever distance; nol; only may the central
and way side stationary agents hold intercourse
with them nt will, at any point of the route, or
in any stage of their progress, but the opposite
trains may communicate at any moment,' with
out regard to distance and rapidity of movement,
with each other, beforo or behind. Thus, through
communications between themselves, and with.
the stationary agencies on the route, collbions
..may be effectually prevented, and warnings bo
given of obstructions or derangements on tho
road." •
If all this be the fact, it wood seem impossi
ble to desire anything more for the security of
passengers ; and we in the United States know
better than any other people how to appreciate
inich . a security. The plan of converting rail
ways into telegraph lines, and making th e
ele - otric.-magnetio meobine an attachment and
servant ri the locomotive, opens new and bound
less prospeots of usefalness for both, while it
serves to indicate that no limits can be assigned
to the progress of human skill and science.
This Bonolli method of operating with the rail
way telegraph is not yet made public; but, as
au evidence of his substantial pretensions, it is
mentioned he has lately received the medal of
the London Society of Arts and Industry for the
application of electricity to Jacquard's loom,
which effects a saving of at least 75 per coot.
Ile is the government director of the Sardinian
telegraphs.
