Philadelphia Pianos, of the best makers, at prices from $225 to ssoq. mbl9 CARD, A FEW days mince, I published eh advertisement of my li liatenuno Pianos, in which an extract from a letter from Prot. IL Rohbock, of this city, addressed to Messrs. Baumgarten & Heins, of Hamburg, the manufacturers, was inserted. This morning I observed in several of the daily papers a " Notice," signed by Prof. it, In which he states that I was unauthorized to make use of it, and that it was Incorrectly stated and applied. In reply—l presumed that if he had written the letter, he, of course, meant what was therein contained, and con. saquently required no authority from him to make the same public. As regards the assertion as to its incorrect. 'less, 1 have the letter in my possession, and it speaks for itself, word for word as I have published. Messrs. Baum garten 8 Heins are not dependant upon Mr. llobbock for eadoisement—their Planes were known, appreciated said releiviki the highest commendations from the first artists, tong before Prof. R. saw fit to pace en opinion upon them. My reason for publishing the extract was in the fact that he was well known in the city, and hot be nose his recom• mendation was necessary to establish Ulu merit of the Pianos. In conclusien, I may add that they stand on their own merit, and are endorsed by such men so List,Thalberg, and others, solely on account of their merit. mh23 CHARLOTTE IlLrimit NOTICE. SITIf [MAI' NIORNI BRADDOCK'S EXPEDITION. [FRO3I WASIIINGTON IRVING'S LIFE OF GEORGE! ' WASMNGTON.I [co:arm:D.] Ire was still unable - to' bear the jolting of the wagon, but it needed - another interpool tion of the kindly intended authority of General Braddock; to 'bring -- hint ,te a halt at the great iroeisings of the Youghiogeny. Here the gene ral nesigned him a guard; provided him with no *merle/3,ond reeirteeled. hit} to remain, under care of his physician, Dr. Craik, until the arri eed of Colonel Dttnbar's detachment, which was tem days' march in the rear; giving him his word of honor that he should, at ail events, be enabled to rejoin the main division before it reached the French fert. 4 ‘; - This kind solicitude on' the part of Braddock, shows the real estimation , in'which he was held by that officer. Doctor Craik backed the gene , ral's orders, by, declaring that should Washing ton persevere in his attempts to go in the eon ' dition he then Ins, his life would be in danger. Orrice also joined his 'entreaties, and promised, if he would remain., he would keep him inform ed by letter of every occurrence of moment. Notwithstanding all the kind assurances of Braddock and his aide- de•campe Orme, it Was with gloomy feelings that Washington saw the troops depart, fearful he might not be able to rejoin them in time for the attack upon the fort, which, ho assured his brother aide-do-camp, ho would not miss for five - hundred pounds. Leaving Washington attic Youghiogheny, we will follow , the march of Braddock. In the course of the first day, (June 24,) he came to a deserted Indian camp ; judging from the num -ber of wigwams, there meist'have been about one hundred and seventy - warriors. Some of the trees about it bad been, stripped, and painted, , with threats, and bravadoes, and scurrilous taunts written on them in the French language, showing that there were white men with the savages. Toe next morning, at daybreak, three men venturing beyond the sentinels, were shot and scalped ' • parties were immediately sent out to scour the woods, and drivein the stray horses. The day's march passed by the Great Meadows and Forth Necessity, the scene of Vi'ashington'a capitulation. Several Indians 'were seen hover ing in the arbodeland the light horse and Indian allies were sent out to eurround them, but did not succeed. In crossing a mountain beyond the Great Meadows, the, carriages had to be lowered with the assistance of the sailors, by means of tackle. The camp for the night was about two miles beyond Fort Necessity. Several French and Indians endeavored to reconnoitre it, but were fired upon by the advanced sentinels. ' The following day (26th) there was a labori ous march of but four miles, owing to the diffi culties of the road. The evening halt was at another deserted Indian camp, strongly posted on .a high rock, with a steep and narrow ascent ; it had a spring in the middle, and stood at the termination of the Indian path to the Mononga hela. By - thie pass the party had come which attacked Washington the--year before, in the Great Meadows. The Indians and French, too, who were, hovering abeut e the army, had just it ft this camp. The fires they had left. were yet burning. The `French' had inscribed their names on some of the trees with insulting bra vadoes, and the. Indians , bad designated in tri umph the scalps they had taken two days previ onely. A party was sent out with guides, to follow their tracks and fall•on them at night, but again without moms. 'ln fact, it was the In dian beast,: that, throughout t hie march of Braddociti they saw him,,every day from the the mountains, and expected to be able to shoot down his soldiers " like pigeons." • There:nob continued to be toilful and difficult; on one day it did , not exceed two miles, having to cut a passage ever e a mountain. In cleaning their guns the men were ordered to draw the charge, instead of firing it off. No tire was to be lighted in front of tlia•pickets.'"'At night the men were to take their arms into the teats with them. Further on,. tbe ''precautions became still " - el- - greater. On the advance p.okete the men were in two divisions, rellevieg each other every two hours. Half e'en:mined en guerd with fixed bay onets, the other half laid, down by their arms I The picket sontinele Wore doubled. • On the 4th of- Suly they encamped on Thick etty Eon. - The country - iv/as less mountainous and rocky, and , the woodsy; consisting chiefly of white, pine were more open. The general now supposed bitheelf to - be viithin thirty miles of. Fort Duquesne. Ever' sinde his halt at the de serted camp, on •the rock beyond the Great Meadows, he had endeavored to prevail upon the •Croghan Indians to scout in the direction of the fort, .and briug him intelligence, but never could aaceeed. They bad probably boon deterred by the number. of French and Indian tracks, and by the recent capture of'Scarooyadi. This day, however, two consented to reconnoitre; and shortly after their departure, Christopher Gist, 'the reel:date pioneer, who acted as guide to the general, likewise set off as a scout. The Indium returned on the 6th. They had been don ,to Fort Duquesne; There were no additional works there they saw a few boats ncder the fort, and cue with a white flag coming down the Ohio ; but there -were few men to be seen, and few:tracks"of any. They came upon an nnfortunate officer; shooting him within half a mile of the fort, arid brought a scalp as a tro phy of lase:fate. None of. the passes between the camp and fort' . were- 'occupied ; they be lieved there were few meneetbroad reconnoiter ing.. - Gist returned soon after them. His in:mount cerroborated theirs ';= but ho bad seen smoke in a valley between the camp and the fort, made pro bably by some scouting party. He had intend ed to prowl about the fort, but bad been discov ered,' and pursued by - two Indians, and narrowly escaped with his life." - * * * * * * * __llad,Praddook been schooled in tho warfare of weeds, or had be- adopted the suggestion of Washington, "Aid' ho r ejected . so impatiently, no would lave'thrown out'lndian scoots or 'Fir ginia rangers in theadvance; and on the flanks, to beat up the woods , and ravines ; but as has been sarcastically observed, ho suffered his troops to march forward through the centre of the plain, with - merely their usual guides and flanking parties, "as if in a review in St. James' Park." It was now near two o'clock. The advanced party . and the working , party had crossed the plain and were ascending'the rising ground. Braddocks was about te•-follow with the main body, and'ind'given, the. word to march, when he heard tux excessively.quitik and heavy firing in front. Wiehington, who was with the gene , rah, surmised, that the evil he had apprehended had come to pass. Forwent of scouting parties ahead the advance' nitrites' wore suddenly and warmly attacked. Braddock ordered Linton ' ant• Colonel Burton to hasten to their assistance Lwith..the vanguard of the main body, eight han dled strong. The residue, four hundred, were batted, and poated to'protnt the'artillery and haggage. • 'rue ' firing continued; with fearful yelling. There was a terrilde uproar,: By the general's ordere an-aide-dd Camp epurred forward to bring him •en account 'of the nature of the attack. Withiint waiting for l hisi return the general him moved forward, the command eleelf, viflugndisnigr thpeettnerrmnosiliihnoctrowaisteh, of the baggage.f • ' The van of the advance bad indeed been taken by s urprise.
