The day police and night watch were notified of the matter, and according to orders repaired to the wharf at the time of the boat's arrival, for the purpose of arresting any person or persona guilty of making hostile demonstrations. A large number of strange in dividuals were in the neighborhood, but on ao -count of the presence of so large a number of officers they desisted from making the intended attack, and all passed off quietly. The following statement, which we gathered from the officers of the boat, sill fully explain the matter:—lt appears that on Tuesday last, while the boat was discharging a quantity of fr :ight at Wellsville, a rough looking individual, who ,'vas standing in the gang-way, was politely invited :° step aside, as his presence there in terfered wi. the hands in the discharge of their accustomed d.. tics. Ho refused to do so, and after similar req nests were medo by the mete and clerk he still po :atsted in hi e refusal, (bol l ing in his hand at th a same time a large dirk knife,) when he was forCtblY ejected from We elapsed after his boat. But a few moments' number of Irish reaching the shore. ere a large mon, who had congregated on the spot, made a general onslaught on the deck-ha' , " of the Eclipse, which ended in a number of both parties being rather severely handled. The boat left for Wheeling, when the shore rowdies, in ;",ur suance of an agreement, to the number of thirty fire, started for this city, where, on the arrival of the boat from below, a general attack was to have been made; which, however, as has been seen, was frustrated by tho prompt and energe tic action of our city authorities. ARREST 07 a Rtmate.n.--A few days since an individual well known to the police, named Frederick Miller, was disttarget: from jai, where he bad been confined cn some trifling offence. Soon after his release, officer Scott, of Allegheny, observed that he had received an i n• crease in hie wardrobe, sporting not less th in three fine suits of clothing on different occasioi.e. As the fellow was guiltless of any honest em ploynaent, the officer determined to find cut where he got them, and had a warrant made out for his arrest, which was placed pa the hands of officer Wills, who took him:into custody. Itl ,1- ler made a desperate resistance, pulling out a large knife, with which be made several tut •le attempts to cut Wills, until it was taken from him. On the way to the Mayor's office, ne pulled out a second knife—such as is used for . cutting cheese—and again made efforts to injure the officer. It was also taken from him, and on subsequent examination, identified ae the ki.ife taken from the lager-beer ball of Nich. kon the night that establishment was entered by burglars. FIELE.—The alarm of fire last night, about half past ten o'clock, was caused by too t urn ing of a large frame building, attached to the Glass Works of James S. Lyons & Co. 'he building was used as a packing house, and i 311- tatted a large amount of straw. The presump tion is that a match was applied to this by an incendiary, as fire was never used in the pu.ce. The structure, together with its contents, was totally destroyed. Four or five hundred dol lars will cover thts. The adjoining butid inge were damaged to a trifling extent. MEM POST. PT I M=TW= ' tI In this mason of anxiety In regard to the growing crops no more appropriate item of commercial Intelligence can be reported than that of a timely and drenching rain which we have 'just experienced in this region It was much needed, and will be more conducive to public prosperity than the arrival of California gold ships. The crops had begun to suffer for want of rain; but It has come now in good supply, and will place the Grass and Wheat crops of this region beyond danger from drouth. There are kali rations, too, that this rain has boon general, and we may hope for such a rise In the river as will make business more active and prosperous. No increase of railroad facili ties can render our city independent of river navigation. It is a great artery of commerce of vast importance to Pitts burgh, and our whole State; anti we are glad to learn that there is good prospect of an early commencement of that "improvement of the Ohio river" for which a company was chartered by our legislature last winter. Suillcient stork will no doubt be subscribed to secure the early organize . lion of the company, and, with so many cities and States interested in it, it cannot be doubted that means will be found to commence and carry forward the work. The Money market of ormeity exhibits: but little change since our last. There is plenty of money for all business purposes. The demand for it Is pretty active, however, and will probably continue so until the middle of July. There is very little paper on the streets: Bankers rates , generally, are from 8 to 9 per cent. Our merchants and manufacturers this season have done a pretty good busi ness, and at any rats a safer business and with less extend. el credits than heretofore. Mercantile transactions could be brought much nearer to a cash heels than they have been, and such a change would be most salutary. The Boston Post says that money there was never more abundant, and that it to much in excess of demand. It believes that In a short time the rates on good paper will be below ELI per cent. The last weekly Statement of the New Yerk city Banks show an improvement in their con dition, and that they were never more sound. In that one week there was an increase of two-thirds of n million in their deposits. Bat the best feature of the New York nom menial news to the reported diminution n' imports. For the first five months of this year, ending May Mat the im . ports of Dry Goode amounted to For the rams time last yea- Showing a reduction of imports of Dry Goods this year, P , far, of $19,470 anti. The decrease of all imports for the same time compared with last year is act much lee ,a than i25,0n0,. 000. The two most desirable matters for the financial affairs and generaprosperity of this country this year are abundint crops and gullibly reduced importations. 'There is so far a flattering prospect of both; and if these hey., aro realized this country will be in a mere Pound end healthy financial condition than perhaps ever before. The Cincinnati Pri ,, Curren! of Jure .sth there is an ample eupply of capital there; and it add.' "It iP now very dear that Urn , must to a •ery abundant supply of money, while there will b- comparntively little demand for it until tho new crops commence moving." We have seen the testiMouy of persona well known to us, who have used the compound successfully, thereby corrohloratiug the opinion of its restorative sue r fry We know of nothing more desirable In the way of per. aortal comeliness and comfort than lege° I head of hair, and any process by which this crowning ornament of the outer man can b e preserved, or recovered when lost, without, in the latter ease, a resort to Wigs, Toupee and Scratches, de serves to be hailed and embraced with gratitude by all of either sex, who are unlucky enough to need its benefit. We took occasion the other day to, notice this valuable compound in the above terms, and now republish what was then said, to show again our favorable opinion of it. The foregoing is taken from the Petersburg (Virginia) IntaZigenca, and refers to an article which has for a time been advertised In our columns. We must confess that we have been somewhat sceptical as to the remarkable elects attributed to this remoter "Hair Restorer." But our In. credulity has been greatly shaken within a day or two by Geeing a couple of certificates of well.known and perfectly credible citizens of the neighboring town of Preston—oho of them the Captain of a New London whaling chip—to the effect that, in each of these cases, a two or three months' use of the "Restores" had actually brought o'bt a new and vigorous growth of hair upon the head where it wasiXtforo bald—the baldness being, in one case, of more than twenty years standing. We do not suppose it is by any means cer tain that, because the application has been thus eurcessful in one case, or two, or a dozen, it is thaifere certain to prove equally successful In all. But with tmehlead-strong evidence as the foregoing, very few bald heads, we suoyect, would willingly forego a fair trial of the " Waterer." I know the effect of It in every case So sure as water will extinguish fire, so sure will this cure humor. I never sold a bottle of it but that sold another; after a trial, it always speaks for Itself. There are two things about this herb that appear to me surprising: first, that It grows In our pastures, in some places quite plenti fat, and yet its value has never been known until I discov. ered It in 1848—second, that it should cure all kinds of humor. In order to give some idea of the sadden rise and great popularity of the discovery, ',will state that in April, 1853, I peddled It and sold about six bottles per day—in April, 1854,1 sold over ane thousand bottles per day of it. Some of the wholesale druggists, who have been in busi ness twenty and thirty years, say that nothing bathe annals of patent medicines was ever like It There ie a universal prate of It from all quarters. In my awn practice I always kept It strictly for humors, but since its introduction as a general family medicine, great and wonderful virtues have been found in it that I never suspected. Several cases of epileptic tits—a disease which was always considered incurable—have been cured by a few bottles. 0, what a mercy if it will prove effectual in all cases of that awful malady; there are but few who have seen more of It than I have. know of several cases of Dropsy, all of them aged peo ple, 'tired by it. For the various diseases of the Liver, Sick Headache, Dyspepsia, Asthma, Fever and Ague, Pain in the Side, Diseases of the Spine, and particularly in Distutees of the Kidneys, Ac., the discovery has done more good than any medicine ever known.
