There is a great freshet in the Seimlkill and other rivers in the eastern part of Pennsylvania A Mrs. M. J. Bute, of Cambridge, Ohio, has ob. tabled damages of $4,690 for injuries sustained by a collision on the Central Railroad. Toledo, Ohio, was lit with gas for the first thus last Saturday night. This is one of the moat thriving and important cities on Lake .Brle. The Lutheran Synod of Pennsylvania and adjoining States is now in session in Harris burg. Roy. J. C. Baker, of Philadelphia, was ;elected President. Illinois appears to have adopted the stringent Liquor Law passed by the Into Legislature, and submitted to the people for approval. Chicago t, gave a majority against it, but the interior coin- I - ties more than counterbalance this. A great double team race for $4,000 came off on the Union Course, Long Island, on Tuesday last, between two mares and two geldings. The latter won quite easily, making the first mile in 2:467, and the second in 2:42k seconds. TILE WEST.-.. 0810 AND INDIANA RAILROAD. Oar citizens probably are not fully aware how rapidly western railroad enterprise is multiply ing:our connections with the cities and regions of of the distant west. The Ohio and Indiana railroad extends from Crestline in Ohio, to Fort Wayne in Indiana, a distance of 131 miles. From Pittsburgh to Crestlino, by the Ohio and Pennsylvania railroad, the distance is 187 miles. The two roads form a continuous route to the west-of northwest 318 miles. In October next the Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad will be completed. Its length is 147 miles. These three roads will, in fact, be but one for all pur poses, running as they do gamest in a straight line, and making the shortest possible route to Chicago, being only 465 miles from Pittsburgh to that city. The speed of the passenger trains will be thirty miles per hour, making the time from hero to Chicago but fifteen hours. We can than take breakfast in Pittsburgh and supper in Chicago the mime day. The Ohio and Indiana railroad, from Crest line to Fort Wayne, is, as we said before, 131 miles in length, 127 miles of which Is literally an " air line," a straight line, running a eon ' siderable portion of that distance through forests, and having no elevations of more than twenty to thirty feet to overcome. On such a road; with a clear view so far ahead, collisions are tot likely to occur ; and over so level a 'awl any 'desirable degree of speed can be attained. Port Wayne, at the western terminus of this road, is a new.: city, but already contains over 10,000 Inhabltante. Five railroads centre in it, and, though itiland, - it is likely to become a large city._ It has now one of the largest and most -splendid - hotels in the country ; and the iltylitAn the midst of a rich agricultural region. 'The Fort %quo and Chicago railroad will be also s literally "air line" road, axcept eight •or nine miles of its distance. In the west, air line rugs mean straight roads. This road, under the diligent and excellent management of Judge BUMS as president, and Isaac R. Strong, Eeq , as chief engineer and superintendent, is being oonistruoted in the most substantial manner, and will doubtless be completed in the fall. These roads are ballasted with heavy gravel, and sodded over, thus making them solid and avoid ing dust These roads connect with numerous others traversing all parts of" the west, and extending to the Mississippi river; and, by an advertise ment in another column, it will be seen that tickets can be procured in this city to almost .aey western city on the line of a railroad. In a few months by this lino of road and its west ern connections we shall be able to go from here to Rook Inland, opposite Davenport, lowa, with out any detention, and in lees than twenty-four hours. A. bridge is now in progress across the Mississippi from Rock Island to Davenport, and thus trains from the east can penetrate to the interior of lowa, and before long to Nebraska and Kansas. MBE ~,..-:-..., : ,2-. : :- ,. MEE MEM= MEM EM= Roads are built rapidly over the western prairies and plains, and far more chettply than among the hills and rooks of New England and 'the Middle States ; and it will not bo long until all parts of the "great west" aro accessible by the rail Five years ago a Pittsburgher could reach lowa in seven days by the rivers : now it -islets thin a two days' journey by tho rail ; and it will ere long be reduced to a single day's - ride. Nebraska and Rams seem now to us as very distant regions; being in fact by the rivers between 17 and 1800 miles. Bat within five years we ehall bo able to reach the eastern borders of either of those territories in about two days. - OPZRING or V 321 CITY HOTEL.—This favorite first-class house has been re-opened under the most favorable auspices, and will hereafter be solely conducted by Col. Joseph Hiss by his bad conduct has „ Jorought much . discredit on the American Su4Neithisig party' in. Massachusetts; and, it seems that Neat Dow is likelylto-rattivo equallys-disgrace to the temperatme party and cause:': Mr_ Dow was fore most among - the , friends of liquor prohibition, and was considered a sort of author of the Maine liquor 1avr.i...11.e is now Mayorof the oily of Portland, Maine. Anticipating the establish; ment of a public , agency in that city for the sale of liquors for medicinal and mechanical pur poses,. he bought, on his account and on specula tion, some $1,600 worth of liquors in New York, and had it brought to Portland. He expected the city to buy it, but it did not decide to do so, arid the liquor remained on his bands. A. Com plaint was made against him for importing it and having it in.his possessiola contrary to the express provisions of his own law.; and a war rant was issued to seize the liquor. After the _warrant .was issued Dow, as Mayor, called a meeting of the Board of Aldermen, and, by his own ettaing vote, had it decided that the city would take the liquor. But while the Board of Aldermen was in session the.lipor was seized by an officer with the warrant. This raised some excitement and of course a crowd gathered about the premises where the liquor was stored. There did not appear-to be any riotous intentions or 111-nature manifested until late in the evening, when some bus threw stones at the store house. Mr. Dow immediately ordered out a military company, made it load muskets with ball cart ridges and march to the store house ; and the "Portland Argus, from which we derive this state ment In substance, then adds : . Without n word of notice to the crowd on Congreta street, and without showing thentrolres to the crowd, :Gm. or Dow ordemi the Rill, Guard to fire into Coniress street. The order to fire was given so suddenly that no one had any chance to scraps from the rtknga oi„thsir guns. Lieut. P.l ten, of the Ride corps, ran roared the eiili, of the City ID 11 • iive the citizens notice of their danger, but before he could do this th.., volley fired by the Rifle Guard swept acmes the street, by vrtli.:ll live men fell." Only one man was killed outright, but several others were wounded. Now, it this statement of the facts is correct, and it seems to obtain credit, it exhibits Mr, Dow as a speculator out of a retormatory law that ho claims to bo the author of; and a cald.blooded tyrant be sides. The cause of temperenca must have dif ferent champions before it can triumph ; and the people of the city of Portland should rid them selves of the disgrace or such a Mayor. Since the above was written we find state ments of the Olds differing in many respects from that contained in the Portland Argus ; nttadd we find, too, that Mr. Dow has been acquie of any criminal intention in purchasing the liquors, because they have been turned to the city to be sold in its ageecy. But was it not Dow's own vote that decided the question that the city take it' That vote was given, tor, after the warrant against him was issued. It remains to be seen whether ho was justified In ordering the military to fire on the people. We will wait for information. WIIEELING AT A " STAND STILL,' --Soya the Washington (Pa.) GOrlmonwealth • " The popu lation of Wheeling, ascertained by census, is 14,136. This is considerable of a falling off from the esimate of some months ago, when it was put down at 18,060." In 1850 the papule lien of Wheeling was about 12,000, from which it would appear the ratio Of increase is not very rapid. At the taking of the last mentioned census, Allegheny City had 21,000 inhabitants, and cannot now have far from 35,000, or nearly three times the population of Wheeling. There era several militating circumstance:l, however. The times for a year or so have been exceeding ly tight in the region round "about the head of navigation," and, besides, the storm which blew down the bridge was a calamity which so small a place was little able to bear. We hope the %ext census may show en increase of population. Tug R AIN. —We hava had a drenching, rous ing hums much needed, and will do a vast amount of good to the crops. Having occasion to go from Akron to the town , of Islaseillon, I started.with my teams consisting of a two - horse buggy, and' after - having pro-. seeded about eight - discovered an object in advance of me lying across the road; - which at first sight I mistook for a crooked limb of a tree, but upon approaching the spot where it lay, judge of my astonishment to find it to be a large rattlesnake, slowly and stealthily moving toward the side of the road, where, upon exami nation, I found he was about to make prey of a young squirrel that was tumble to move from its position. Being anxious to see the result of his movements, I followed him as close as I thought it prudent to do; but his majesty not liking the intrusion, or preferring me for a victim, immedi ately gave a very load rattle and turned directly towards me. Being unarmed, and not thinking myself in a situation to meet my assailant, I was obliged to turn and give as is commonly called "leg bail," which 1 did to the best of my ability; but being closely pnrsued, And finding that I was rapidly losing ground at that pace, I was somewhat frightened, thinking that unless I could succeed in distancing him I would cer tainly become his victim. Exerting myself to my utmost, I finally in. creased the distance between the reptile and my self, but 613 yet I had no great advantage ; but in my flight I was fortunate enough to find some thing in the shape of a weapon, being a good stout stick about three feet long and about four or five inches in circumference. Hastily seizing this, I turned and prepared myself for battle, being bat a moment's work, as the snake was then close in the rear gathering himself up to make the fatal spring upon me ; be made a mo. mentary pause, during which time I held my breath through fear and excitement together, lest I might fall to hit my mark. Daring this sbrt pause I took advantage of his position and attack him a severe blow with ray stick immediately on the back of the neck, close to the head, ahioti stroke to my joy and surprise entirely severed the bead from the body, causing it to fly some twenty paces from the spot where 1 stood. After the head was severed the body continued to run in different directions, as it generally the case previous to its death—but in this case it continued for an unusual length of time, owing no doubt to the size of the reptile and the amount of muscular strength which it possessed. After it became sufficiently quiet, so that it could be straightened out, I mea sured it closely and found it to bo six feet and eleven ihs in lengt by ine Kull a half inches In nc ciercumference,h being n tbo largest one of that species that had ever been seen in that region of country. Knowing the incredulity of some persons respecting: snake stories, I concluded to throw him into the buggy and take him to the house of Mr. C. A. John son, close to the road, who has taken the pains to have it skinned and the hide stuffed, and can testify to my statement, as the hide as welt as rattles aro now in hie possession. I have given you this description as I thought It might be interesting to some of your readers, should you insert it in year journal. Yours, respectfully, DANIEL TERRYMAN. Massti.tos, June 1, 1855. Attempt to Potion a Wedding Party (Pram the nottancira Alllttifill, Jame 51 We find the following letter, dated Emery and Henry College, Washington county, Va , May 30, in the Petersburg Es:press of yesterday. The letter states that on the evening of the 221 ult., it. S. Kane, Esq., of Scott county, and Miss Sarah, daughter of Colonel Anderson, were married at the mansion of the bride's father. Oa the following evening, a large company having assembled at the residence of the Karma, at a late hour it was found that most of the par ty, who bad partaken of a lot of custard, were suffering from the effects of some deadly poison. There were so many affected that the number 1 who escaped were scarcely able to attend to their suffering friends, and the greatest terror prevailed. Two phyaielane were at the scone of distress and suffering as soon as they could pos sibly attend after being sent for, and pronounced the Fix present all poisoned. Upon examining and analyzing the custard, It was found to be strongly impregnated with arsenic. I have been unable to obtain the names of the parties, but regret to state that, at latest ac counts, some 20 or 26 of those who partoook of the poison were not expected to live. The young and beautiful bride was among the number most seriously affected. As yet, my informant states, no one has been suspected—the servants being all sick, as they had also eaten freely of the poisoned delicacy. The greatest consternation and s excitement pre• vails in Scott and the adjacent counties, and persons were too much overcome at the idea of such a wholesale taking of human life, to in stitute any investigation, or adopt means for the detection of the villains who- perpetrated this horrid deed. THE St. Peter's Courier thus brags of the climate in Minnesota: " Ripe strawberries were picked on the prai rie, at this place, on Saturday last. Corn is up four Inches high, planted nine days since; it can be seen in Mr. Broyar's field, on the road between this piano and St. Paul. A hickory sprout was cut by Mr. Milton Clark, of this spring's growth, measuring five feet six inches long, and five-eighths of an inch in diameter at the cutting. Beat this, ye favored climes." The same paper says : " The thermometer on Monday last, at noon, stood at 96 degrees in the shade."
