A FEW days since, I published an advertisement of my
liesnretta Pia:cos, in which an extract (rota a latter
from Prof. H. Robbock, of this city, addressed to Messrs.
Baumgarten & Heins, of Hamburg, the manitfacturer;
was Inserted. This morning I observed in several of the
daily papers a " Notice " signed by Prof. It., In which he
states that I was unauthorised to make use of it, and that
it wif's incorrectly stated and applied. '
In reply—l presumed that it he had written the letter,
he, of course, meant what Wen therein contained, land con
sinuently required no authority from htm to make the
Fame public. As regard, the assertion as to its incorrect
ness, I have the letter in my posse:Tice, and it speaks for
itself, word for word as I hove published. Messrs. Baum
garten & Heins are not dependant upon Mr. Itohbock for
endoisement—their thll3oB were known, appreciated and
received the higlwat rommendatious Irons the first artists,
long before Prof, R. saw St to pass an - opinion Upon-them:
My reason for publishing the extract was in the fact that
he was wall known in the city, and riot 1.013 ItUdt , his rerom•

Pianos. In conclusion, I may add that they stand on-thitif
own merit, add are endorsed by such mep as List, The I berg,
and others, solely on account of their merit.

DAILY MORNING POST•
FRIDAY MORNING
Curiosities of the Britlull Census.
During the last fifty years;. the population of
Great Britain has. increased 93i per oont. In
the urban- and manufacturing-districts, -the in
crease has been much greater, often ranging as
high as 300 per cent. There -is :a tendency
among the people to agglomerate in large mass
es. They swarm from the rural districts to the
towns. Stolid John Bull is infected•with the
innovating spirit of the age, whieh, -iii silently,
but surely, insinuating itself into the 'very
stronghold of antiquated prejudice. The gene
ral diffusion of intelligence, the unpreiedented
development of the thinking and reasoning
faculty among the common people, Us gen
erated an intellectual independence. which
is in direct antagonism to the spirit of nopser
vatiarn, the - aristocratio 'intolerance, which - has
bound England hand and foot until sheiltood
upon the.brink of ruin.- An Englinh 'writer has
the temerity to term his countrymen afast peo
ple. We surmise that, if be were to step his
foot upon this aide alba Atlantic, his ideas
would be considerably enlightened in to 'what
constitutes a fast people. .
The census of Great Britain for 1851 discloses
tome curious facts. There is an excess of fe-
tales over males of 'a quarter of a million: In
our own country, the males predominate one
hundred and ninety-nine _thousand.. Oat of
2858,000 women in Britain, in the prime of life,
one:million and a
„quarter are, unmarried:
,Thia
evinces an extremely artificial 'state of 'society.,
Among the upper class the evil' is moat glaring.
Younger, sons of noble families are almost uni
versally debarred the matrimonial , relation.
'Reared in luxurious , arid indolent habits, they
prefer to eke out a bachelor existence on 4% limi
ted income, to.entering tho avenue of active life,
and bravely battling for , an honorable indepen
dence. False pride as to maintaining a certain
style of living deter numbers of tho young men
from marriage. Other causes have.contribtited
to the increasing numbers of the «beautiful lay
nuns, whose sad, unnatural, objeotionloss oxia
tencp, whose wasted powers of giving and re
ceiving joy, It makes the heart bleed to wit
ness.,
The ecclesiastical prohibition, 4, a man shall
not marry his grandmother," is not so absurd
or useless as might at first , appear. The °coma
shows one hundred and six men under thirty
five years of age who are yoked to wives of six
ty and seventy; a hundred and forty-four oases
where men of forty:aro married 'to women of
eighty years of age.. Two cases are recorded
of striplings of twenty;who are are united to
wives 'of four- soon years. A paradox 'arises
which must be "a poser to, those who expatiate
largely on the physical degeneracy of the human
race at the physical era---Tongerity has mate
rially increased.
Of persons who are devoted to the puisult of
law and medicine, tbere•are eighteen thoniand
each, and the same number of olergymett of the
Church of England. The deaf, dumb, blind
and insane number 52,843. Three millions of
children enjoy the benefit of common school in
strnotion. While Ireland and Scotland tarnish
respectively 10 per cent. and 4'per cent ; Eng
land furnishes 82 per cent. of the navy.
~ Of
the army 37 per cent., and 11 percent. are .de
rived from the two former; while England dup.
plies 47 per cont. - . •
Otte curious anomaly presents itself, whieh
indicates the propensity to underrate tho age of
females. After a critical examination and PM'
parison with the returns of the preceding year,
the Registrar General arrived at the conclusion
that 35,000 females had been -returned. as-'be

DEFENCE OE THE POUT OF ST. PAFEESEITECOL--
Advices from St. Peterebargh, of the 17th, state
that to strengthen the defence of the port three
iron steamers have j ust been finished andlaunch
ed at the Votkinski manufactory, which are to
come on there as soon as the navigation is re
sumed. The organization of the regiment. of
rifles of the Imperial family was. being actively
poroeded with. The city was like a vast bar
rack, where military movements and - the spirit
of war threw.; everything else into the shade.
The Emperor was indefatigable in introducing
improvements into the army; and in order, to
give a fresh impetus to the ambition of officers,
he bad commanded that the names of such for
mer pupile of tho military schools ,as had-sig
nalized themselves by , note of, heroism should-be
engraved on marble slabs, and placed : up the
buildings where they were eduoated. The first
names to be honored in this way aro those of
Baumgarten, Citate, 1853; Tchegoleff, Odessa,
1854 ; and Tottleben,. Sebastopol, 1854.
A JERSEY - 31AV COMMILEDING IN THE vaumns..—
Major Burr Porter, of Newark, N. F, left.that
pity, some months since, to join the Turkish
army in the contest with. Russia. The Newark
