place for snob things being on the top. It is not
proper to put a drunken acquaintance in an om
nibus, or to get in yourself if you have been
drinking to excess. It is not proper to let your
wet umbrella drain on the toes of a neighbor.
It is not proper, in short, to do anything, which
you would consider ill-bred, if done in your own
house'; for an omnibus, for the time being, is
the common rroperty, and domicile, so to speak,
of all who occupy it.
It is the duty of all, finally, to see that no im
position is practised, either by the drivers or the
passengers, or by one passenger on another. It
is especially the duty of the gentlemen to be
courteous to women, particularly to those who
mem fatigued, or have children with them; and
it Is the duty of the sex, in return, not to im•
pose on the men, as is so frequent a practice in
an °Wilhite._
Wo really see no reason why these public con
veyances should continue to be tho bear-gardens
they are so often made to be..—why they should
remain the favorite retreats of boorishness, dis
comfort, and all sorts of selfishness, instead of
becoming a common ground for the exchange of
the civilities and amenities of life.

newly painted and fitted up in the post iss!iduotte style,
for the emommedaticn of the traveling public. Under the
administration of Capt. 0. and his polite assistant, Mr. Wm .
0. Anderson, clerk, there in no doubt all who travel on the
" Challenge " will be cared for. She Is advertised to leave
for Cincinnati to-day, positieely.
Tux new steamer " Lebanon," arrived from Brownville
last week; she will be commanded by Capt. John L.
Rhoades, and is now at the wharf loading for St. Louis.
Iler keel was built at Brownsville, by Cox & Linbart; en
gines by Snowden & Sone, of the same place. Tonnage by
customhouse measurement 225 7645. Her capacity for
carrying will not be surpassed by anyof the stern-wheelers
now tanning. She draws, when light, only sixteen inches
water. The "Lebanon" will leave on Wednesday, and
should any one wish to make n pleasant and quick passage,
they would do well to avail themselves of this opportunity,
as she will go direct to St. Louis.
