.THE CITY PO
MON OAT MOILNIN 0
DIETREOTPTE Fins.—About half-past one
o'clock, on Saturday morning, the most deetrac
ttvo we have been visited with for
some time, broke out in the rear of a row of
brick houses on the corner of Penn and Hancock
streets. 'The fire was started (undoubtedly by
an incendiary) in a small frame back building,
and when first discovered was just bursting
through the roof. Before the alarm could be
given, the adjoining sheds were in flames. From
there it quickly communicated to the wagon
shop of Maloney & Downing, on Hancock street;
a large three story brick adjacent, belonging.to
Rev. Mr. Stnitt,'ocoupied as a school and dwel
ling house ; and to a row of three brick houses,
inhabited by Mr. Brooks, Mr. G. G. Backofen
and Dr. Hoffman, on Penn street; which, to
gether with a great portion of the furniture, &0.,
were destroyed.
The wagon shop of Messrs. Maloney & Down
ing was a frame structure, and was completely
destroyed. Their loss will probably be about
$6OO, on which there is an insurance of $2OO in
the Harrisburg Mutual. A German named Ru
dolph Hunzecker occupied the second story as
a coach manufactory. He lost about $l2OO
worth of work, together with his books, accounts,
&c. Insured in the Pennsylvania Insurance Co.
for $4OO.
In addition to the large brick building on
Hancock street, Mr Smith also owned the house
occupied by Mr. Brooke, on the corner of Penn
and Hancock, and hie loss will not fall much
short of $2,000, including his own furniture, of
which but little was saved. He is insured for
$8,200 in the North American, and $2,000 in
the /Etna.
The library and apparatus attitahed to the
school, owned by Mr. J. B. Smith, were mostly
destroyed. Insurance to the amount of $450
was effected on this, in the Home Company.
Dr. Roffman's loss is light, and is ooverod by
au insurance of $BOO.
. The other two buildings belonged .lifihir. John
Herron, and are fully covered by insurance in the
North American. Mr. Backofen, iiho lost a
large portion of his furniture, is also fully in
eared in the Franklin.
The bath house and stable attached to the
residence of Mr. B. L. Fahnestock wore entirely
destroyed. Damage $BOO or $4OO.
That the fire was the work of an Incendiary
there ottoot be the slightest doubt; as it started
in a place ;There fire is never used. A gentle
man who lives in one of the houses consumed
also heard the footsteps of several persons
prowling around the yards just before the fire
.eommenoed. We understand that attempts had
been made before to fire the same property.
Another.—On Saturday night, about twelve
'o'clock, another fire was started in a small frame
building on Try street, used by Messrs. Phillips
dt Co. as a grinding shop for their Glass Works.
This structure was entirely destroyed ; and from
it the flames extended to a stable owned by the
same gentlemen, and a frame dwelling, the pro
perty of Mr. Samuel Clark, (occupied by a Mrs
Scott and Mr. Amos Fort v.) The stable was
burnt to the-ground. A valuable horse, belong
ing to Phillips & Co., was also burnt to death.
The dwelling was only partially destroyed. The
whole loss will not exceed five or six hundred
dollars. We believe there was no insurance on
any of the property.
SHOOTING EXTRAONDINANT.—A. shooting affair
of an exciting character occurred on Saturday
afternoon about three o'clock, on Liberty street,
near Market. The parties concerned in it were
Mr. Isaac Craig, of this city, and Mr. Jeremiah
WKibben, son of Chambers M'Kibben, Esq., of
Philadelphia. The origin of the difficulty we
did not learn ; but beard it stated that the two
were conversing in an apparently amicable man
met in, front of R. P. Nevin's Drug Store, when
. 3PliGhben exhibited a letter to the other. After
la read it, hlSibben appeared to get excited and
pulled out a ;evolver, which he cocked in a great
thurry and presented at the breast of Craig, put.
iing the trigger at the came time. The cap for
tunately snapped; but hillibben again cooked
. another barrel, and fired the at.:".ond time, with
like result. Craig then took to 11:9 heels, ran
'up Liberty to Market et., along Malice.; to Mr.
Knox's Hat Store, which he ran Into and
Through the back door on to Liberty street. At
the corner of4larket and Liberty M'Ktbben lost
eight of the object of his pursuit; but observ
ing him again as he came out of the hat store,
raised his pistol and fired. This time the weapon
went off, but without any other effect than ac
celerating the pace of the fugitive, who contin
ued running at a high speed through Cecil's al
ley to Penn street, where, we understand, he se
creted himself in the house of a friend.
The streets were full of people at the time of
the occurrence, and quite an excitement was
created. A number of rumors were current in
nation to the cause of the difficulty, but as the
parties themselves are the only ones cognizant
of the facts, they are of course without founda
tion.
A FIGHT AMOIRIFIT THE FIREMEN —As the
Wrilant and Duquesho engine companies wire
setsrning from the fire on Saturday night, a
.disgraoeful tight occurred between them, on
:Smithfield street, opposite the City Hotel. The
:fight originated in a difficulty which took place
at the fire. Brickbats, stones, &c. of which a
plentiful supply appeared to be on band, were
thrown in great profusion. Several members of
exalt company were struck with these missiles,
but we believe no one was seriously injured.
The Vigilant toys fiinally getting the worst of
the fun, deserted their engine, when it was over
thrown into the gutter by the other party, and
damaged considerably. The police were on the
ground but did not seem anxious to make any
arrests during the melee. We hope the whole
.affair will be thoroughly investigated at once.
PIERCE KELLY, the insane man, who was ar
-rested on Friday evening, was sent to the West
ern Pennsylvanta Hospital the same night, but
by some means contrived to make his escape,
and came back to the city, where he was again
taken into custody, and is now lodged in jail.
His conduct since his arrest has been extreme
ly violent, and he acts almost like a wild beast
• in his cell. He will probably be sent to the In
sane Asylum at Harrisburg.
RESIOVED.—Ii will be seen by reference to ad
vertlsement that 8. Bteinruch is about to remove
his Restaurant from 128 to 111 Wood street, just
below Fifth street. All who want anything
choice in the eating line should bear this in
mind. His now saloon is going to be an elegant
affair.
DUITI3.IOT COVRT.—Before Hon. M. 11110:1001.
In the ease of William J. Smith vs. John
Smith's executors, the jury returned a verdict
for defendants.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT.-Si: persons, arrested
by officer Smiley for disorderly conduct i Pips

Wthane.
