THE OLDWORLD AND THE NEW.
Within four months from this date a line of
telegraph will be cotnpleted all . the way from
New York city to St. Johns on . the island of
Newfoundland. This will shorten the time in
which Ectiopeatrnews can be received at New
York at least four days. In six days then we
shall have news from all the prineipal.conntries
of Europe. A New York company, with aban
dant capital and skill, has been engaged in the
work for - More - than two years, and it is now
approaching ouppletion. The route extends
through a portion of Nova Scotia, New Bruns
wick, Prince Edward's Island to Cape Breton.
F rom this point it is seventy-four miles to the
nearest point on the coast of Newfoundland. A
submarine cable of that length will be comple
ted by the Ist of Jane, and will be laid down in
July. From that point on the coast of New
foundland to St. Johns, the principal seaport on
that island, the distance is four hundred miles.
For that distance tho company has constructed
a road and line of telegraph. In constructing
the road rich beds of excellent ocal were discov
ered, and also mines of copper and lead and
quarries of elate and alabaster. fihe mineral
wealth of the island has thus been for the first
time explored and developed. St. Johns is situ
ated on the eastern extremity of the island. Its
trade has hitherto been with tho almost count
less fishing vessels that visit that coast every
year. It will now receive a new impetus from
the discoveries and the enterprise of this Yan
kee company. The steamers to and from En
rope will there be supplied with coal, and as the I
mines of lead and copper are opened a valuable
trade will spring up. From New York to St.
Johns, by the line of the telegraph, the distance
is twelve hundred miles. Fully fourdays, then,
before the mail steamers from Europe reach
New York, the most important news it brings
will be known all over this country. A mail will
be delivered at St. Johns, and the steamer will
hardly be out of its harbor till the news will be
flying over the wires all over this country.
Bat this great enterprise is not to stop at St.
Johns. A London company, with ample means,
has enterei into a contract with the New York
company by which It stipulates to lay down a
sub-marine cable from St. Johns across the At
lantic ocean to the west coast of Ireland, a dis
tance of fourteen or fifteen hundred miles. This
they contract to have done by the year 1858 ;
and the work is now in such a state of forward
nese that it is supposed it can be completed In
the summer of 1857. No doubt is now enter
tained of the prnotibility of the undertaking;
and in two years New York and London will bo
in instantaneous communication by telegraph.
London and the camp before Sebastopol " are
already connected by the magic wires. When
the trans Atlantic line is complete, events in the
Crimea—the battles and bombardments; should
- the war continue, may he known in St. Louis or I
New Orleans on the same day of their occur
rence, although they are nearly eight thousand
miles apart. London too has telegraphic com
munication with all the principal capitals of Eu
rope ; and thus events occurring all over that
continent can be known to us in a few hours.
The nineteen days bombardment of Sebaatopol
oost the Allies more money than the whole ex
pense of completing this telegraph line &third
of the way round the globe.
There is now no doubt that in a few years tel.
egraphio linea will be completed from Constan
tinople to the East Indies, and from St. Peters
burgh to China. Chinese and East Indian news,
that we now wait for months, will then come In
a day. So complete is now the communication
between London and St. Petersburgh, through
Belgnm, Holland and Prussia, that the leading
articles that appear in the London Times in the
morning are sent over the wires, and read at the
palace of the Emperor of Russia before noon of
- .
the same day.
The commercial value of such speedy intelli
gence from all parte of the world is well under
stood. Bat its effects upon the social and polit
ical condition of the nations will be equally
great and valuable. Nations so near each other
in point of time must become more assimilated
to each other in point of intelligence, and the
relations between them become more intimate
and friendly.

The burden of, the Chronicle's song, as usual,
is Flour:" It mentions that " contracts have
been made for flour to delivered at New York
in June at eight dollars'per barrel," and further
ventures to prediot that "the price will not be
more than six dollars per bbt. in Pittsburgh
after harvest. We warn the readers of our af

liance on these statements, for it is whispered
among the knowing ones that the Chronicle is in
the interest of the Bears of the flour market.

The New York Times of Friday has a scorch
ing communication in defence of the frail sister
hood who have been so summarily dealt with by
Mayor Wood. The' writer says : "If a Man's
personal liberty is invaded, we talk of magus
charts, the constitution, the laws of nature, &0.,
but when those who, sacrificed to our lust and
perfidy are first banished from their homes, and
then driven into the streets to await the Alms
House or suicide, are hunted by policemen and

neither Christianity or Humanity offers to shield
them"
Newark, N. J., is now estimated to contain a
population of 57,200 persons. In 1850 the
United States census made the population 38,894,
Newark is entirely a manufacturing place, and
its rapid increase shows that our manufacturing
cities are destined to become great cities. In
1826 the population of Newark was 8017 ; in
I 1830 it was 10,095 ; in 1835 it was 18,201 ; in

TitIPiGS I& CALIFORNIA.
SACEIAIIESTO, MONDAY, April 30, 1856.
The past fortnight has not been productive of
any change in the business transactions or
money matters cf the country, for the better.
A Idling in prominent articles of merchandise
of twenty.five to fifty per cent. has brought die•
aster to many houses, who, though not insol
vent, are stripped of the wealth they had accu
mulated.
Candles, Sugar and Flour have been the prin
cipal losing articles ; the latter so much of a
drug in the market that on effort is being
made to dispose of a portion of the surplus
by shipment to New York, per clipper ship
Charmer. Other vessels are up for freights
and cargoes, and Wheat and Flour will, for a
novelty, be sent Seventeen thousand miles for a
market.
There is a year's supply of these articles now
on band, and a new crop due in three months—
a larger ono than ever produced before. The re•
cult is inevitable ; either a market must be found
at once, or the farmers must seek other employ.
1 1 merit. Large quantities have been shipped to
China for eight months past ; to Australia—to
Chili, even, a quantity of Wheat has been sent
on.a venture. Selling here at 10. per pound,
or 95c. per bushel, it can compete in Chill with
success, and be sold at cost with freight; in the
East, a profit is anticipated. Butter has always
been deemed a reliable article to send to this
market, but is now as precarious as any other.
The influx of stock across the Plaine has en
abled hundreds of persons to establish dairies,
and manufacture a fresh article. This is now
so abundant in our market, as to be sold at the
same rates of the imported article, and, of
course, obtains the preference. As it is steadily
increasing as a branch of domestic manufac
ture, the demand for importations will decrease.
The rate of money on loans Is three per cent.
still, and there is not any scarcity out of San
Francisco. At that place, so largely bave spec•
illations in real estate been indulged in, that
loans were made on property, worth a year
since $50,000, to the amount of $30,000 or
$35.000. The same is now worth, perhaps.
$20,000, and mortgagera surrender the proper.
ty for the amount loaned.
Last week the foreclosures were so great that
the sheriff and clerk bad twenty deputies. Uo
til the plethora of goods at the metropolis is
consumed, (pity there could not be another con
flagration,) the same state of affairs will con
tinue to exist.
The legislature during the present session
passed many wholesome taws, and but few that
merit censure. Moat of those concocted for
private ends have been killed by Governor Big
ler's veto.. Ho has advanced to a high point in
estimation of many who have hitherto been his
enemies, by his unswerving opposition to any
thing that would be a draft on the State Trea
sury for unnecessary purposes.
A law has been enacted that will prevent fro
quenoy of, if not entirely suppress the barba
rous practice of duelling. It requires any legis

beeidelf disqualifying him for any place of trust
or profit In the State. It is coneidered a com
plete preventive. Dr. (twin and the entire Cali
fornia representation in Congress ere here.
Senator Weller will make this place his perma
nent home. Dr. Owlet's partisans say he is re
elected United States Senator, having received
a plurality vote. It is dubious if the Hon. gen
tleman will claim his seat upon such light and
frivoloua,grounds.
The State has purchased a fell length portrait
of, Captain Sutter, by Jewett, for $2,600, to be
hung in the Assembly Room, and ordered ano
ther of Major General Wool, U S. A. Mining
affairs are now more prosperous than over be
fore. From every direction the same word is
returned of success and golden rewards for toil
and patient waiting. The dust flaws freely
through the market, and you will eventually get
the lion's share as usual.
Quartz mining is improving monthly by in
crease of facilities in extracting ore, and by
superior machinery that is now made In the
State. A claim in Calaveraa County, with we
ter power and three sets of crushers, hae yield
ed $22,000 the past year.
The rain of Thursday last was probably the
last visit we shall have Ibis season. Crops look
finely, fruit trees thrive with a speed unknown
in your cold climate, and abundant yields of
grains, vegetables and fruits will be gathered, if
they cannot be made profitable to the growers.
The interest on our city debt will be promptly
paid, and since my last letter parties have made
offers at high rates to take the entire loan 'mins
sary to be made, should the bonds maturing in
July next be paid instead of renewed. As
near as can be ascertained, a majority of the
Council intend paying the loan in cash, as here
tofore.
Improvements in buildings are taking place
daily in our city—the pact year no less than a
million dollars having been expended in brick
buildings.
The railroad is graded from the city fourteen
miles ' • in some portions it Is net fully com
pleted. The sleepers will be placed during the
month of May, and the iron expected to arrive
in June will be then placed. The oars, locomo
tive and fixtures entire,.are shipped, as per bills
of lading that aro here. The engineer, Mr.
Judah, is confident the road will be completed
and in running order t y August. When done,
the stock will pay larger dividends than those of
any road in the world. The assessments of 60
per cent. made thus far have paid all the current
expenses.
Miss Davenport is performing here to crowded
and delighted audiences. Anna Bishop, Boohsa,
and Herr Mengis, to slim houses. Neafie and
Miss Estelle Potter have played a good engage
ment and left. Silsbee has not yet appeared in
the city. Hoare.

meat has transpired on the Lomlsland tracks
since the pacer Hero went one hundred miles in
note hours, as prevailed on this occasion. About
'noonday the people commenced flocking to the
course by railways, stages, coaches, light wag
ons, country box wagons, dirt carts, and every
other description of vehicle that could be
thought of.
As the day advanced the crowd increased, and
up to the hour of four o'clock—the time for
starting,—the stands, fences, and a portion of
the large enclosure, were densely filled with
spectators. Early in the morning the track was
re-surveyed and found to be sixteen feet over
mile, which gave the judges power to deduot 320
feet from the first or twentieth mile. The infor.
mation of this discovery were soon within the
knowledge of every man on the ground.' The
was said to be in fine order, and the odds
I were $lOO to $6O in favor of the feat being ao•
compliehed. Even bets of $lOO, $6OO and $l,-
000 wore made on the result, and those who
were supposed to have all the "points" down,
suffered to the extent of ten or twelve thousand
Shortly after four o'clock the judges were as
signed to their places, and announcing them•
selves ready, Flora Temple was driven in front
of the stand under the reinmanship of Mr. War
ren Petlbody, who was chosen by James D. Mc-
Mann to drive her the entire distance. The
landmark was set for the starting and ending of
each mile, end as the flag wee struck, the word
go" was given, and the beautiful little animal
glided away amid the applause of her backers
and admirers. She darted off to the quarter
pole at a 2:30 gait, but slightly slackened her
speed before going the mile, and came up in
2:66.
First Mile —The wind was much increased
duet blew, and being overcast, it was much to
'he disadvantage of the horse. The utmost care
seemed to be used by the driver in keeping his
steed to her work, without fretting.
Second Mile.—The mare was not the least
troubled In her gait, and seemed to act as if she
could go fifty miles as easy as twenty—but the
result proved very different.
Third Mile —Flora was now twenty-two se
conds inside of her avcrsge time—three minutes
—and many were of the opinion that the was
going too fact on the commencement.
Fourth Nile. —The mars hero fell off a little,
bat still kept within the average time. She
made this mile in 2:59, and was not materially
, worried.
' Fjth ffile.—This mile was trotted within one
second of the previous one, and the horse was
apparently laboring slightly.
Sixth Nile.. On the Birth mile, Flora lost four
seconds, which, together with her actions, indi.
sated she was working hard.
Seve-nth Mite—Before reaching the quarter on
this mile, the mare exhibited severe labor in
keeping up the three minute gait. Hero the
financial speaulators began to east sheeps' eye,
at each other.
Eighth Mlle.—This was the unlucky mile,
Flora woe quite tired on the book stretch. She
was hold up, her mouth sponged out, and then
resumed her speed, but unfortunately, the shoe
flew from her left fore foot, when within a few
rods of the Judges' stand. There—the jig is
up l" exclaimed one, while another individual
was heard to say—" Say, you are judges—why
dont you stop the hose, and put on her shoe ?"
[Laughter.] The owner was discouraged, but
he permitted the mare to continue onward with
out the shoe.
Ninth Aide —Notwithstanding the accident,
the animal did not give up, and started un the
next mile, 24 seconds inside of the average
me.
Tenth Mlle.—When the mare wan cloniog on
the tenth mile she made a break and seemed to
act wildly, owing to the assemblage crowding
oser ou the traok. She grew lame, and it was
evident that that ehe rouet soon
Eleventh Able.—The hoarder again sponged
the month of Flora, but her lameness ;o
creased, and the driver !signified his Intention to
stop her.
Twelfth Hile.—As the horse started on this
mile, it was disoovered ehe had bursted a vein,
and the blood spattered over the forward axle.
It was no wee to try any further, and she was
withdrawn by the owner. Annexed will be

Address of the Cledho Bishops.
[From the National latallliTeneer.)
Messrs. Gales and Beaton will oblige a very
large number of their most attentive readers
by giving a place to the following closing son
triages of an address of the Bishops of the
Catholic Church, recently assembled in Council
at Baltimore. The advice conveyed in it par
takes so clearly of those sentiments of heavenly
charity and patriotio devotion which should
characterize the true Chr atian, that I think it
deserves a wide circulation, and therefore I so•
licit a place for it in your widely read journal.
I may add that I have for nearly forty years at
tended a Catholic church, and I can with great
truth say that I have never heard from pulpit
or altar, a word or sentence conflicting or in
consistent with the sentiments and principles of
this address.
May 21. T. L. N.
Beloved Brethren of the Laity, we embrace
you all with parental affection, and entreat
you to walk circumapeotly, for the days are
evil. You know what manner of precepts we
have given you in the name of the Lord Jesus;
for this is the will of God, your sanctification.
Practise patience, forbearance, charity towards
all. In the exercise of your rights as free citi ,
:ens, remember your responsibility to God, and.
act as freemen, but not as haviog liberty as ti
cloak for malice, but as the servants of God.
Respect and obey the constituted authoritieso
for all power is from God, and thiy that
resist, resist the ordinances of God, and.
purchase for themselves damnation. To the
General and State Governments you owe al :
legiance la all that regards the civil order:,
the authorities of the Church challenge your
obedience ip the things of salvation. We have
no need of pressing this distinction, which
you fully uuderetand and constantly observe.
You know that we have uniformly taught you,
both publicly and privately, to perform alt the
ditties of good citizens, and that wo have never
exacted of you as we ourselves have never made,
even to the highest eoclesiastipal authority, any
engagements Inconsistent with:the duties we owe
to the country and its laws. On every oppor
tune occasion, we have avowed those principles,
and even in our communications to the late Pon•
tiff, we rej•oted as a calumny the imputation
that we were, in civil matters subject to his au
thority. Be not disturbed at the misstate
ments of our tenets which are daily made, or
at the effort to deprive us of our civil rights,
and of the confidence and esteem of our fellow
citizens.
Formidable as is the combination for this pur
pose, we do not despair that the juatico and
good sense of the nation will soon discover the
groundless character of the suspicion thrown on
the fidelity of Catholics, whose religion teaches
them to respect and maintain the established or•
der of society, under whatsoever form of govern
mentahey may be placed. Brethren let the light
of your example shine before men, that they may
see your good work and glorify your Father who
is in Heaven. .Pray for the conversion and sal
vation of all men, for this is the will of God,
who desires that all men may be saved and may
come to the knowledge of the truth.
