MEETING OF THE WHIG COUNTY COMIIITTEE.
—A regular meeting of the Whig Executive
Committee- of Allegheny county was held, yes
terday afternoon, at the St. Clair Hotel.
The following gentlemen were present :
Messrs. James M'Auley, E. Darlington, C.
Gang, R. S. Smythe, R. P. M'Donald, William
Morrison, and J Dickey.
• On motion of Mr. Smythe, it was
Resolved, That any member of this Committee
who belongs to the organization termed the
Know Nothing" party, is hereby requested to
withdraw.
The following resolutions were then offered
and unanimously adopted.
Resolved, That in view of the present oondi•
ilea of the political affairs of our county, it is
inexpedient to'call a county convention, in the
usual fortn,•the . present year.
.Resolved,. That the Chairman of this Commit
tee, Mr. M'Auley, is directed to nominate at an
early day, a general committee for the county,
consisting of one member from each election
'district, of which committee he is hereby coo-
Stituted chairman ; and be shall call said com
mittee together Tor consultation, and each action
in relation to the-fall election and the future I.c
.tion of the party as it deems expedient.
Mr. Dickey then offered the following resolu
tion which was passed :
Resolved, That the course of the Pittsburgh
Gazette, in its opposition to the encroachment of
the slave power, and its warfare upon secret
oath-bound political societies, meets with our
.cordial approbation.
FATAL ACCIDENT Ott EKE PENNSYLVANIA. RAIL -
soAD.—Yesterday afternoon, about one o'clock,
as the express train 'onathe Pennsylvania Rail
sand was rounding the curve near the Hospital,
at a speed of about eight miles an hour, a female
was discovered standing on the track. When
first seen, she had an umbrella up, and appeared
to be totally unawares of the presence of the
approaching train. The engineer gave the usual
signal-to put down the brakes, and reversed his
engine. The speed was so far stopped, that the
cars came up quite gently, and any person aware
of their vicinity could have stepped to one side
easily; but the woman still remaining immova
ble, the bumper of the locomotive struck her on
the side and threw her over the embankment.
The train was then stopped, and the engineer
and several others ran to her assistance. When
picked np she was still breathing, bat died al
most immediately. She bad two or three cute
and bruises on the face, but her death was nn
doubtedly caused,by injuries received internally.
The body was brought to the passenger depot.
on Liberty street, where an inquest was held by
Coroner Lowry. It was trbre ascertained that
her name was Mrs. Snyder that she resided in
the Fifth Ward, and that she was eighty-two
years of age. A number of Witnesses were ex
amined, who united in exculpating the officers
of the train. - A verdict in accordance with the
facts above stated was then rendered.

In the case of Friedly et al. vs. Charles Ham
man et al. the jury returned a verdict for
fendants.
Thomas Rourke vs. Alexander M'Clnrg. The
jury found for plaintiff six cents damages and
six cents costs, to be released on payment I , y
defendant of $425, and plaintiff filing or de
ti,:ring a release of his title to the premises.

The plaintiff-in this Case was a contractor on
the Pl an k R oa d, b u t pot firnishing the Road ut
the time specified in the c ontract, the job was

Borrow, May 23.=A - price fight took place at daylight this
morning betweon Blackwood and Mackey, near Island .
Ponds, Vermont. Itixty.five rounds were fought, Me ckey
being the winner. BlackwOod is so badly hurt that he Is
not expected to recover
Chief Justice Shaw, in the. Supreme Court this morning,
delivered an opinion in the case of Joseph Hiss, who asked
to be released from arrest for debt. The decision was, that
the Hasa' had an inherent right to expel Hiss, and having
need that power Hiss could not claim any plivileged excep
tion. He was therefore remanded to the custody of the
jailor.
The Board. of Aldermen have appointed nine agents to
sell liquor under the new law. Two are grocers, and the
rest are apothecaries.
The first case under the new law is now going on in the
Police Court.
The Asia sailed at noon with 184 passengers for Liverpool,
and $938,000 in specie.
The account of the prise fight needs confirmation. A
despatch from Portland resys the pugilists passed through
that city this morning on their way home, the authoritiee
having prevented the fight.
The first liquor case under the new law was decided
against the defendant, who a
th ppealed. Measures are talien
throughout the State to test e validity of the law.

the people, and against appropriating public money to sec.

when light only 14 inches. Her hull was hullt by Cox &
Lenhart, of West Brownsville, and measures, by melons

den, cf Brownsville, are 10 inches diameter. 4 feet stroke
three boilers, 86 inches diameter and 20 feat long. Her
cabin is one of the neatest afloat, and was built by our

tie" will be bailed by those doing business on the upper
Mississippi for the lightness of her draught and superior
accommodations. -

We took occasion the other day to notice this valuable'
compound. In the above terms, and now republish what was
then said, to show again our favorable opinion of it.
The foregoing is taken from the Petersburg (Virginia)
Jrddligencer, and refers to an article which has for a time
been advertised in our columns. We must confess that we
have been somewhat sceptical as to the remarkable effects
attributed to this famous "Hair Restorer." But our in.
credulity bee been greatly shaken within a day or two by
seeing a couple of certificates of well.knOwn and perfectly
credible citizens of the neighboring town of Preston—one
of them the Captain of a New London whalink ship—to the
effect that, In each of these cases, a two or three months'
use of the " Restorer" had actually brought oat a new and"
vigorous growth of hair upon the head where it viashefore
bald—the baldness being, in one case, of more than twenty
years standing. Ws do not suppose it is by any meats cer
tain that, because the application has been thus successful
In one case, or two, or a dozen, it is therefore certain to
prove equally successful in all. But with such head-strong
evidence so the foregoing, very few baldheads, we suspect,
would willingly forego a fair trial of the " Restorer." All
such '-old heads" are informed that the article can belied
