A FEW days since, I published en advertisement of my
lIAIMMM Pianos, in which an extract from a letter
from Prof . a Rohboolr, of this city, addressed to Messrs.
Baumgarten di Heins, rf Liamburg, the manufacturers,
was inserted. This morning I observed in several of the
doily papers a tt Notio.',"- signed by Prof. R., hi whibh be
states that I was unauthorized to make use of It, and that
it was incorrectly stated and applied.
In reply—l presumed that if MI bed written the letter,
he, of course, meant what was therein contained, and con.
sequenily required no authority from him to make the
same public. &e regard. the assertion es to its incorrect.
newt, I have the letter in my pOSBPS6iOI3 and it speaks Mt
itself, word for word as I have poblisbch. hlessrs. Baum
garten h ileitis aro not dependant upon Mr. Ilohbock for
eudorrement—their Pianos were known, appreciated and
re=vived the highest rommendstions from the first artists,
long before Prof. 'lt. saw fit to pass an opinion upon theta.
My reason for publabing the extract woo In the feet that
he was well known in the city, and not be muse his reconv
mendation was necessary to establieh the merit of the
Pianos. In conclusion, I may add that they stand on their
own merit, and are endorsed by such men as List, Thalberg,
and others, solely on account of - their merit.

branches. Them Boerne to be two extremes—to
=Call off, or none at all. Same practise the
former, leaving it to the tree to forniits own
top, while the most , think it pity to Upon eo
nice a tree, and leave all the limbs. The result
of the former mode is to have rs diseased trunk
and tiwkWard branches. Tholatter coarse eith
er kills the tree or came a growth'so - clod as
hardly to be perceptible, • -
The only general rule that cart be given for
pruning is, to •remove the branches , se that in ex
tent and number they shall not exceed - the roots.
One thing should always Se rememberdd—it
not so zenith the limbs as the leaves which drink
up the sap, and prevent growth, The ?wounds
caused by removing large limbs should be cover
ed with wax. - • '
Time for Pruning.-:-Col. Young, a Weri:known
and successful, grower of fruit, astral' asstates
man, once told me that for trimming tree') was
when the sap was in itsgreatest Sow. • This is
succinct, and the time varies aceording to the
season and fruit. I supports the proper time for
pruning all trees is when they are'putting forth
their blossoms: ..
The reason why trees should not be trimmed
only when the sap is 'in vigorous nation 18,
the heat of the sun dries up the 'peones
through which the sap flows, and.ctinsequently
it is kept from running to the outward part, to
deposit its weedy sedireent. Eagratiog is sim
ply inserting the solon in the bark 'or - ciuter edge
of a limb,- so that the sap, passing along the
pores, or passages of the stock, can -flow into
those of the salon. It is plain that theyehould
be placed directly oppbsite. If, kept in this po
sition and covered with wax, to exclude the sun,
success is sure.' F. 1). C.

Next to Indian corn, no cereal is of so much
Importance to this section of the country as rye.
It differs from wheat in its adaptation to soil.
The former succeeds best on :
.a soil whiolt con•
tains so much alumina as to give it considerable
tenacity. " The latter seldom does well on such a
soil, but flourishes on those of a more silicious
and porotmoharaoter. It Is well adapted to the
light soils of New , England, while on the elate
looms of _the_ valley, of the Hudson and other
siinilar localities it is quite at home.- -
The value of the drop' in this neighborhood is
not telly appreciated. . .The great requisite in re
gard to ittraulturo is-that - thesoil ‘ aad subsoil be
properly drained. It ,ennot bear
_Cold water
about its roots. The crop can be cheiply raised.
It requires but -little preparation of the soil,
though the yield is in propordon to the goodnees
of the land and favorableness of the Beason--
ranging from five to forty bushels to the acre.
It is sometimes affeeted by blight or Mildew, but
leas frequently than wheat, and on the whole is ,
comparatively a sure crop.
The valueuf rye per bushel does not differ
emiati in tho eastern mark - eta front that of the
northern corn. The straw. constitutes 'an im--
portantitein In the advantages of its cultivation.
It, is - worth in this market an averag 13. - of $l6
per ton. A fair crop, Bay 90 bushels to the acre,
will give a ton of straw to the acre. We are in
formed that two tons to the acre'are - obtained.
The straw is used here , ohieffy as bedding for
horses; but among the Germans of. Pennsyl
vania, who generally understand-the economical
management of horses,
the grain is ground and
the straw cut, and the two mixed together form
the principal food of those nobleicams which
always attract the attention of 'etrangers.
The Germans, too, make great use 'of rye in
feeding themselves. They are fond of theAread,
and say it is - stronger than that frOm - wheat.
But good rye bread is no despicable food in the
best of families. When made from good sweet
grain, properly ground , and bolted, and the
proper skill used in all the maininlatiOns, it is
not only wholesome but palatable, and' our city
bakers who make it right, 'dispose "of large
quantities. It was not so greats hardship es
some suppose, that our New England ancestors
were chiefly, confined to "rye and Indian" for
breadstaffs. According to somtVenalysle the
proportion of nitrogen (the mustilmforming
principle) is nearly the same in rye as in aver
age oamples of wheat. :Rye brcad Aontains
more sugafand keeps moist longer than wheat
bread. •
Rye is not a-hard crop for .land, thOngh land
may be exhausted by it. Grass gran far bet
ter after it than after oats, and, evert better thane
after grain except barley. Tke - prtiper time for
sowing it is the same as that for winter wheat
—the-forepart of September. itPasttire land, or
that from which .a crop, of ,hay has bee taken
the present season, may be used for .it._ It is
better to plough it as soon as`fractiriable, in or
der that the sod matbecome paitialliedecom
posed before Sowing :the grain,: Light lard
ploughed well once, may be my werkekwith the
harrow., and field cultivator as. not to need
another ploughing. Six or seven seed
to the acre is the proper quantity. -
There is a conSiderabliv difference in-varieties
of rye. A.,variety called
- 171u/4(cpiei . IRtrodued
from Fronde several yearssince, .vres_ntiustially
productive, but was not thcught'quitC as good
for bread as the white rye. On dry grOund, not
-likely to heave by frost, clover and vim seeds
may be sown with the rye. ~But -tapers the
ground is not well' drained thole is liability to
winter-killing, and in suet situations:it ie better
to sow the clover and grass 'mods-laid 'as the
snow is goinguff in tho spring.—Boston CCU-

Thirty•four years ago; I eowed .some -need of
the common pie-plant, and when old enough to
transplant, seleoted the finest plants, and set
them out in rich mould, one root' hi a place.
After a year or two, select the best again, and
transplanted ae before, taking care to give them
plenty of room. As near as I can recollect, I
took off the flowers as often na they. appeared.
When the plants became vigorous,' I - uadd them
as -I bad occasion, paying , no , attentlotr• to the
number of stalks out from si single bud; except
to take the largest, and those fully grown. Some
years they - yielded well; then again, they were
feebler
I then adopted the plan of cutting only-one
stem ate time from a bud, leaving an-interval
of some days peforo taking another /ram the
same bud. Following n p this plan, I-have suc
ceeded in obtaining a very superior article ; of.
ten two stems' with the leaves cut off; will 'weigh

For years, no blossoms have appeared , npna those
which have heen irqnly c;rt. while ,the BUDD

of my own raising.
I cover my plants with light atable manure in
the fall. This is all the care I,give:them, ex

the new plants in that timo will be as ;Vigorous

I might add that I rarely . cut my stems, until
the leaves are nearly full size,. 111614 found
