The Boston papers announce the return of Mr.

The Collins steamer Atlantic, which sailed at

Congress.
At an early hour on Sunday morning, the trees
of Independence Square, in Philadelphia, were
covered with birds of most beautiful plumage,
whose songs delighted all who were up early

them. . Some of the tribe remained during the
day, but on Monday morning every warbler had
fled.
As the eventful Fourth of July draws near,
public anxiety as to the enforcement of the
Maine Liquor Law increases in Now York. The
leaders of the Temperance party are at present
industriously organizing executive committees
and sob-committees to aid the." proper authori
ties" in the execution of the ordinance. Oa the
other hand, the liquor dealers continue quite as
active as the opposition. Their meetings, night
after night, suffer no relaxation, and the •' Re
sistance Fund," it is said, has been run up now
to $76,000.
Pandering to a Depraved Taste
One would have thought the Now York press
bad said enough about the murder of Bill
Poole, who was a ring-fighter, and the keeper of
a vile doggery, and nothing more. For weeks
after hie miserable career had closed, they de
voted nue third of their available space to giving
accounts of meetings, &0., &0., which were held
to honor his memory ! And now, after the ex•
citement had completely subsided, the press of
that city must needs revive it again and pander'
to the depraved appetites of her citizens for the
sake of a few paltry dollars. Not one of those
papers for a moment contended that Bill Poole
was anything but a blackguard, nor that if ho
had lived like a decent member of society would
his career have been brought to so inglorious a
close. Lewis Baker, who is the supposed mur
derer of the native American bully, has been
arrested as the telegraph informed us the other
day. This certainly deserved a paragraph, but
to give it any greater prominence would be ma
king capital out of the misfortunes of a fellow
creature, and assist in corrupting the public
morals. But we expected to see undue promi
nence given it in the New York papers and we
have not been disappointed. One paper comes to
us with an account of his arrest, filling no less
than five columns of small typo ! This same
paper gives us long homilies occasionally upon
the immorality of the times, and prides itself
upon being a conservator of publio morals. We
wonder how much its Bill Poole contributions
will assist In the work_
Tax LATE SPEAKER Or TEE HOWIE — . lll
last letter, the Harrisburg correspondent of the
Philadelphia North American spoke of the late
Speaker of the House, Mr. Strong, as being the
inost unpopular presiding officer who has filled
the chair for years. He likewise makes some
statements which will be bard to disprove. The
expressions of the writer were strong, but there
was no appearance of malice in what he said.
Tho Philadelphia Bulletin, whose proprietor was
a member of the House, characterizes it as "a
gratuitous and wicked piece of personal rancor,
wholly unauthorized by facts." It further re
marks : "No ono could have filled the Speaker's
chair more entirely to the satisfaction of all
parties than Mr.. Strong. Hie fairness and his
eourtea to without reference
to their political or personal opinions, were re
marked upon and admired by all the members,
and by all who were in the habit of frequenting
the House." This will be news in some quar

SUFFOCATED IN A WELL.—We learn from the
Clarion Democrat that a young man named Jona
than Sharp, of Richland township, in that coun
ty, recently came to hie death from suffocation in a
well, into which ho had descended for the pur
pose of adjusting a pump stook. When a little
more than half way down he called to the men
at the windlass to draw him up, but in a moment
after he fell to the bottom, where he remained
a few minutes, when his lifeless body was taken
out. Ho left a wife and two children.
SHOOTING.—The Brookville Jrfiersonian
says that on the Bth inst. Mr. John Voetbinder,
a citizen of that place, and a man upwards of
Seventy years of age, killed five "dipper" docks
at two sucoessive allots, with a single ball rifle.
The first shot ho killed three, taking them all in
the head, and at the next he killed two. There
were only fire ducks in the flock.

Complimentary Benefit to nlr„ Buchanan.
This eminent tragedian takes a complimentary
benefit this evening, tendered him by his numer

to be very powerful. Mr. B. is a native of
Pennsylvania, and to the manor bred, and has
claims upon all of her citizens who delight to
honor and encourage native talent. Hie finely
proportioned figure, and extraordinarily devel

ful representation of this arduous character.
Mr. B. has recently returned from a remarkable
successful professional tour in Europe,--having
played engagements at all the leading Theatres
there—and has won for himself " golden opin

The benefit to-night will no doubt be a jam.

The Albany Evening Journal, in commenting
upon this statement, remarks that Mr. Fillmore

HENRY A. WESE, having retired from the

THE LAST ExcITENEST —New York must have
its day of excitement, no matter the cause or re
cult. The last feature is the capture of Biker,
a pot house rowdy, who contributed to tutu ou t
the bruisers in a fight at &anvil Hall u short
limo since. Extraordinary efforts have been
used to seize Baker, the supposed murderer of
Poole, and we hope the earns vigilance may be
observed hereafter towards all ruffians, of what
ever hue.

Democracy in the Lexington district, Kentucky,
represented in the two last Congresses by J. C.
Breckenridge, and formerly by Henry Clay,
have nominated as their candidate at the next
election L. B Dickerson, of Scott county.
Did Waal:Lingtors Swear I—The qn esti on
Somo time since two of our Whig c,,tempora
ries had a fierce discussion on this point, but
which unfortunately ended by leaving the reader
as much befogged as ever. " Minnie Myrtle,"
writing to the New York Time,, from Mt. Ver
non, comes to the rescue of the party which
took the negative side of the question. She
says:
We have seen in several papers lately, the re
iteration of a statement that Washington was
addicted to the vice of profanity. We have
thought it possible that on an occasion of great
provocation an oath might have escaped his
lips, but we were, not long since, domiciled for
several days with an old gentleman, whose
birth-place was near that of Washington's, and
whose father and father's father knew him well,
and who himself had often been in his company.
Ile says that any charge of immorality of any
kind against Washington is wholly untrue. If
he had not refrained, from profanity on account of
its wickedness, he would have done so on ac
count of its vulgarity. It would have been
such an offence against his dignity, so at va
riance with his principles of refinement, if not
of religion, that no temptation would have se
duced him to the commission of such n sin.
It was the uniform charge against him in his
lifetime that ho was an aristocrat, on account of
hisreeerve. lie was not a man to be approached
with familiarity—was not an accessible or social
man, oven at his own fireside. le it at all pro•
bable, then, that ho should so lower himself as
to utter vulgar oaths in the presence of soldiers
and servants? It is upon good authority
that I am able to deny it—upon the authority of
those who were not his political friends, but who
can, nevertheless, do him juetioe. That Wash•
(Won was perfect, I am not at all anxious to
prove; but I wish to believe, and wish all the
sons and diiughters of America to believe, that
he was free from every stain of Immorality, as
he-certainly was.

011 from AVoter-•Petroltnm a Burning
We find the subjoined article in. the. Baotou
Transcript. The rock oil it speaks of is found
in abundance within a short distance of this
city :
In certain parte of. the Westera.filtates, there
is found, floating an: the_ surface - of the Small
streams, an oily attlistaticii of the consistency'
and color of thin molasses, and possessing a
strong bituminous . odore It sometimes exudie
from the earth in what are called !‘tat Springs,"
and running into the neighboring breaks, floWti
into - the larger streams and rivers. Nor years
this article has supplied the means of light to
the settlers in the neighborhood, who have been
accustomed to saturate a blanket by laying it up:
oil the segues of one of these streams, and then
collecting the floating oil. And it has frequent
ly come to pass that individuals of moderate
capacity, of whom it has been disparagingly re
marked that they would " never set the river on
fire," have falsified the assertion by actually ig
niting a portion of the running stream.
The substance which is thus floating about,
waitieg to be burned, is " Petroleefie,!' or, as it
is usually called, "Rock Oil," a - Product of
vegetable decomposition found in various parts
of the world, but eepeoially in the'coal districts
of the 'United States. In the northwestern part
of Pennsylvania it may be gathered in large'
quantities, and of a quality- which bids fair to
render it an important article of domestic_ eon
gumption. A company of gentlemen have pur
chased a tract of land in Venango county, Pa.,
with the view of bringing the oil into use, and
have submitted specimens to Professor Benjamin'
Stillman, Jr., of Now Haven for chemical- ex
' amination as to the value of the article for illu
tnivating and lubricating purposes.
1 The result of Professor Billiman's investiga-
Hone, which have been carried on during the past
winter, is highly favorable to the success of the
i enterprise. By means of distillation ho ob
tained from the crude material, as taken from
1 the [nlace of the water, about 90 per cent of
I the whole product, in a series of oils having
I valuable properties, though not all equally fitted
1 fpr illumination and - lubrication. By the origi
nal distillation, about 60 per cent. of the raw
material is obtained in Ike form of a thin, light
colored oil, of a faint bituminous odor, and a
density of about 750. Its value as an illumina
tor was tested, with the following results:
1. The oil is burned to the best advantage in
[ the common camphene lamp, with a glass cone
! to direct the current of air, as with an unpro
tected wick it smokes badly.
2. When burned for twelve hours the uniform
ity of the light was greater than that of cam
phene, and neither the wicks nor the tubes were
crusted. The light was pure and white, with
out odor.
3 Tested by a photometer, or apparatus for
the measurement of light, the rock oil proved,
in a r;gid comparison with other illuminating
agents, superior to them all in intensity of light
and economy of consumption. The article which
most nearly approached it was catophene,
which, with more than double the consumption
of fluid, produced a degree of light but about
one fifth greater.
As a lubricator, the rock oil le pronounced by
Professor Silliman to possess the advantage of
ri.maiiiing fluid at a temperature of 15 degrees
below zero, of being entirety free from any cor
rosive quality, and of not becoming gummy,
acid, or rancid by exposure to the air.
There are other properties of this singular
substance which will add to its importance as a
natural product of the e.il. Professor Stillman
is slow engaged in n series of interesting experi
ments upon Its value as a material for producing
gas, and upon the product, of the last distilla
tion, as a substance which, in the form of pared . -
fine, resembles spermaceti, and from which ex
cellent candles may he made. It is expected
that the arrangements for distilling the rock oil
will be completed by next fall, and the article
sold at a moderate price. With sperm oil at two
dollars and a half n galled), candles at a propor
tionate price, and the explosive burning fluids
°alp to be used at the rink of one's life, a new
illuminator, which shall combine the advantages
of cheapness, safety and brilliancy of light, can
not fail to come into extensive use. The tract
of land—about ono hundred acres—now owned
by the company, will yield an average supply of
about five hundred gallons pc r day, but arrange
totals will proti-My be made for increasing the
supply by mote extended operations.
