HERRICK 110IISE.--NEW BRIGHTON. The above excellent hotel, one of the largest outside of a city in the Western country, having been thoroughly renovated and refitted by the proprietor, Mr. W. A. BLosson, was yesterday opened by a public entertainment, for the sum mer season. At no hotel, and in no direction from this city can boarders and families find a more convenient and agreeable resort during the warm weather than at the " Merrick House," New Brighton. The railroad station is but a few steps from the house, and it can be reached in an hour's rido from Pittsburgh. We were present at the entertainment yester day, and can truly say that few hotels in any city can get up a more bcuntiful and excellent dinner than was " sat down to " by nearly a hundred ladies and gentlemen. After the din ner was disposed of with a hearty good will by the guests, lion. B. B Chamberlain called the company to order, moved that Mr. M. T. C. Gould take the chair, which was agreed to una nimously. Mr. Gould prefaced the following sentiment with a few remarks: The Merrick Howe, New Brighton: Though a plant of slow growth, it hoe at length IllarssnLet I; and as the fra grant 0 lor of Its good name is now wafted on every breeze to fill the land, so may thy daily droppings of ripened fruit from that good name return a golden harvest, to fill the (wi rers or him whose guests we have this day the honor to be, amid the blossoms of May. Mr. Chamberlain then offered the following sentiment : The Pres,: The bulwark of popular institutions. Their representatives: May no fusion or alliance deter them from maintaining their indep • ndence and integrity. G. F. Gillmore, of the Pittsburgh Foal, was called on to respond to this, which he did, con cluding with the sentiment: The Merrick House: May the " Bletromi " that hare la ely appeared la it be speedily succeedei by a harrest of success and good fortune in the house, and abundant pros perity to Neir ILighton. Ron. Mr. Robertson, late senator from that distriot, responded to a call in a neat speech, giving an interesting account of the growth of the towns along " Beaver Falls," of which New Brighton is one, and concluded with a sentiment, the substance of which was that the interests of the thriving towns of Beaver county and those of Allegheny county were identical. Mr. Babcock, of the Pittsburgh Chronicle made an elegant speech, concluding with an appropri ate sentiment. Mr. McGregor, of the Beaver Star, being called on for a speech, declared he could not make a speech but would tell a story, which he did in a good style ; and the company were mt iified that ho had made a good speech. Several other gentlemen, whose names we would men tion bad we taken notes at the time, entertained the company with some good remarks and sen timents, and after thanks to the gentleman and lady of the house for their sumptuous entertain ment the company adjourned to the spacious and elegant parlors, where music and various amusements closed the day. Tho literary institutions of New Brighton are worthy of very favorable mention. Mr. Taylor, of the Episcopal church, has erected an elegant building, and will soon open a boarding school in which about forty boys can be accommodated. &iv. Mr. Davis is the principal of a good and flourishing female seminary in the village: and Mr. M'Creary is preceptor of a well conducted aoademy for boys. New Brighton has many prosperous manufac turing establishments, already, and the pros pect of more in a short time. Among others worthy of notice, if we had time, we may men tion the extensive shawl manufactory of Mr. Wilde & which " turns out" about $75,000 worth each year. We have no time at present to say more than that New Brighton and the Merrick House offer attractions unsurpassed by those to be found at soy other place in the vicinity of Pittebnrgh. COMPARATIVE RECEIPTS OP TUE CHARITABLE Assootarions.—As an appropriate addendum to our reports of the Anniversary Meetings of the week, says the New York Courier and Enquirer, of Saturday, we give a comparative statement of the receipts of the principal associations for the three years last past, as presented in the Annual Reports. The receipts for the year end ing 1855 are, with but one trifling exception, much below those of the preceding year, but generally are fully equalled, and in some in stances,' considerably exceed those reported in 1853: 1851 1854. 1855. Addams This gentleman, we understand, closes his engagement on Thursday evening, in conse quence of his having generously offered Friday night to Mr. Buchanan, who will then take a complimentary benefit. Mr. Addams is the best and most original Yankee Comedian who has visited our city for years, and deserves the sup port of Pittabarghers. But his forte is not con fined exclusively to Momus. His tragic powers have received the hearty endorsement of the press in other cities, and we would like to have a " touch" of the grave as well as the gay, be fore he leaves us. What say you, Mr. 'Addams ? CHOLERA IN Messes —Those disposed to emi• grate to Kansas should not believe all that is said about the prevalence of cholera there, and in western Missouri. If such reports, indus triously circulated, can deter northern men from going there to settle this season, the Missouri elaveholders will have gained - a point in their effort to extend slavery over that territory. There may be some cholera there. But Kansas is as healthy as Pennsylvania when families have once secured accommodations for living comfortably. Cruceoo still continues its wonderful career of expansion. A recent number of the Trmea says that every house in the city is full, and that rents have gone up to enormous rates. Since the Ist of May the increase of rents is stated to have been twenty.five, seventy-five, and even one hundred per cent., a story which seems rather fabulous, but may nevertheless be correct, as all The lines of travel leading westward are crow• ded with travelers and emigrants. It is said the StAte Department at Washington is in possession of information that a filibuster- ing expedition is organizing in New York, under General Ebenique, to proceed to Peru for revo lutionary purposes, and that more arrests are expected The jury in the piracy case, which bee ocon pied the attention of the United States Court of Philadelphia for some days past, came into court on Sunday night at ten o'clock, and rendered a verdict of uct guilty. Judge Kane met them twice previously, when they were unable to agree. In deepening a well at Mobile, last Tuesday, a cypress stump, which bore nie.marks, was discovered at a depth of eighteen feet. Remains of trees are frequently lanvered deeply im bedded in that region, but marks of their hav ing been cut are never observed, and will afford matter for geological investigations. A strenuous effort is now making in Louisiana, for the suppression of the practice of carrying concealed weapons. The new low passed by the Legislature of that State makes the carrying of concealed weapons a misdemeanor, and subjects those who are accused of it to a trial before the criminal court. Most of the homicides in New Orleans originate from this habit. On Tuesday last, as the Wheeling train was passing along between Harper's Ferry and Washington Junction, having on board Henry A. Wise, a newsboy stepped up and asked him if he wanted to buy the life of " Sam ;" to which ho replied, "No, sir. write his life and the cause of his death in about three weeks from this time." Pawnbroking appears not to be in very good odor with the Philadelphia Councils, as there is o diposition to raise the rate of ',ceases to Pro. hibitory rates. The objection to the system is that most of the pawnbrokers have regular thief customers who are employed to prowl about and steal what they can. To do away with the ne cessity- for irresponsible pawn-shops, the last Legislature chartered a Chattels Loan Company which will be better adapted to the relief of the needy, as its object is more to afford relief than realize profits. It will also, consequently, offer no inducements to pickpockets and thieves. FANCY DIIINKS.—During the debates in the Canadian Parliament on the Maine Liquor Law, Mr. Larwill, a member, stated that he found the law, when passed in the United States, was often evaded by the sale of liquors called by new names. He therefore proposed an amend ment to refer the bill back to the Committee of the Whole, with instructions to amend it by in serting as prohibited liquors a long list of fancy drinks" with all sorts of queer names, which he had copied from the bill of fare of a Boston saloon. The following is the list, the nailing of which created a great deal of amuse- ment, viz : Plain fruit Julep, Spire Punch, Peach Julep, Arrack Punch, Capped Julep, Split Ticket, Sherry Cobbler, Peach Punch Claret Cobbler, Deacon, Roped, Agent, Smasher, Tippe na Peco, Moral Suasion, Shambro, Mead, Egg Nogg, Brandy Rooster Tail, Poor Man's Punch, Port Wine Negus, Epicure's Punch, Mixed Fruit Julep. PILGRIM CELEBRATION AT M ART LAND —On Tuesday, May 15th, was celebrated for the first time we believe, at St. Mary's city, the anniver• sary of the landing of the Catholic Pilgrim Fath ers of Maryland. The event thus to be com memorated toak place more than two centuries ago. Leonard Calvert, with two hundred emi grants, sailed from England and arrived at the Potomac early is 1634. Here he purchased of the natives, Yamaeo, well known Indian settlement, to which was giv en by Calvert the name of St. Mary's. Thus was founded the colony of Maryland, which, by the freedom allowed to all religious opinions and the liberal character of its charter, was speedily in creased by large arrivals from other colonies and Europe. The city of St. Mary's, has long since but existed in name. SUMMEHIN NEW ORLEANS.—The Crescent man, no doubt in a melting mood, has come to the conclusion summer is at baud, and gets off the following paragraph, which daguerreotypes to the life a hot day in that almost tropical region. It shows, too, that once is a great country," for on the very day the New Orleans editor was sweltering with the mercury at 90 in the shade, snow fell to the depth of several inches in por tions of Ohio and Pennsylvania. But to the par agraph : With the exception of the Orleans, the thea ters are all shut up or burnt down. Hotels begin to look sleepy—steamboat cabins come down vacant and go up crowded. Negro dray drivers and laborers are beginning to play mar bles on the levee. Soda fountains fizz all the day long, and ice-cream glasshouses glitter at night. Snow-white linen, leghorns, and awnings are in felt fashion—the gents begin to carry pal metto fans—and mosquitoes and magnolias are on the increase. ( From the New York Mules.] SAN FRANCISCO, Monday, April 16, 1855; The week past has been decidedly a,moistone. It has rained almost incessantly since the ail g of the Nicaragua steamer, and consequently there has been but little doing in a business way. The reads to the mines are almost impassable for teams, and there are no purchasers in town for supplies, and the jobbing trade must necessa rily continue very dull until such times as the roads become settled, and we are not very san guine of nay great improvement even then. A large Beet of clipper s hips have arrived within the week, bringing heavy cargoes that do not bud a market. The average patsages have been excellent. The Tel has maintained her character for speed ,by doing ic "in 109 days, and the Boston Light has won the cup, having performed the voyage in 102 days. Tho next on the list is the Morning Llghl, 112 days from New York, and the Charmer, from Boston, in 114 days. 80, thus far, Boston has beaten us. We have yet to hear from the Flying Cloud, however, and rely on her to redeem Gotham. The average of the four ships is loci days—not bad. The rain has retarded the discharging of ves sels, and they are now lying at the wharves, taking advantage of the intervals " between showers" to get out a few cases. It seems quite like old times to see so many splendid ships at our wharves, and there is more animation among the 'bong shoremen and stevedores than for many months past; but it is a melancholy reflection that these cargoes have, like Mr. Doolittle's pigs, came to a poor market, and the consignees are dreadfully crowded to raise money to pay the freights. Bills and notes aro trifling matters. We don't pretend to pay those; but freight. must be paid, or the goods are sold. And if eases known to contain gold dust were put up at auction, they would hardly bring charges. As an illustration I will mention that a gold speaking trumpet, drawn in Duncan's Lottery a few days since. and guaranteed to be worth by weight over $3,000, was knocked down for $l,OOO. Somebody made a nice speculation. The remittance by the Golden Age will be ranch heavier than by any one steamer for a month past, and will undonbiedly seem encouraging, and sound evidence of an improvement here ; but it must be horno in mind that almost the entire amount of this remittance is the freight money of the ships now at our wharves, which is forced from us, and not by any means volun tary remittances. 110 not fl atter yourselves, therefore, that things are improving with ue. No such good news. Oa the contrary, we ore still in the "doldrums" as they say in salt waterpingo. Prices are not "look ing up," except after the Irish fashion. The ar ticles of crushed sugar and candles, for instance, are falling now, &haat a cent a pound per diem. The fact is, it is difficult to name half a dozen articles that are paying Cost and charges, and on top of this general depression we have some fif teen cargoes of assorted merchandise pouring in on us, and a dozen more at hand. If every man in the country could consume an entire cargo in a month, it would hardly keep pace with the re ceipts Are there any goods left in Boston and New York? If you can spare any please send us a couple of doe n cargoes per month, and in crease the number as prices decline. In the way of amusements we have more than are supported. At the Metropolitan Mies Es telle Potter has been playing to a vast expanse of cushions unoccupied. Not so much her fault as the dull time." At the American, Laura Keene has been doing better, and in spite of the mud, rain rind darkueee, the house has been passably well filled. This evening Silsbee, the Yankee delineator, commences an engagement, and ate is half as comical as his " pictur " in dicates, he will prove a great blessing to the com munity, for they require something to make them laugh. Send us along all the " comicali ties" you can spare; and as times are improving in your City, you can afford to be generous. We would like to borrow Davidge and Brougham— they would be appreciated here; but we don't want any " eminent tragedians "—have our fill of them already, and they can't fill the house; and lady stars, even, though ever so good, are not well patronized. We are not excitable in those days, and furores " are very scarce. Even Opera is not well patronized, and the sweet notes of Barilli are like all others—at a shocking die count. A very interesting history of the Drama In California is being written by J. E. Lawrence, formerly of the nmr3 and Transcript, and now of the Go/den Ern—the first number of which appeared last week in the latter paper. There is probably no person in California more fami liar with the eutject, or competent to give it to the world in a graceful manner. The " hand sum Kornai," as he is called, is Jost the man to do it ; and when it is done, it will bo well done. The reduction in price of passage on the steamers has brought down a large number from the mines, who have been deterred heretofore by the high rates from going home. We are sorry to see them leaving, for on them hangs the fat •of California and its prosperity. Many of them intend returning, however, and will bring their families with them ; and it will not be very long before the young miners will be large enough to do seine scratching on their own account. The rain has given a fresh impetus to the spirits of the laborers in the mining districts; and the amount of gold taking out during the last month will compare favorably with the same period at any time during the last three years. So we think ourselves safe in saying the mines, at least, ore not giving out. On the contrary, they seem to be as rich as ever when they do give out. The community might as well leave this part of the world and climb a tree. That the mince are producing as largely, may perhaps encourage shippers, in the belief that remittan ces will soon begin to come along. Perhaps so; bit we rather think not. Charity begins at home ; and it is so long since anybody here has seen, much less had any money, that they will be very much inclined to hang on to it a 6 hort time, just to got familiar with its appearance again. We are sorry for you ; but we want all we have, and a great deal more. It. S. 0. General Approprlation• for the State of Pennsylvania.
