DAILY. MORNING POST•
MONDAY 'MORNING::
OLP MOUSE AND THE
"Dear mo, James I I do believe this old lime
will be tumbling down on all our heads, before
- thelear is out."
So spoke an armlet's-looking little woman, the
Mother of nine children, and mistress of a house
an hundred years old, to her sturdy farmer•
husband, James Appleton. James, junior, other
wise called "Jemmy,". the youngest but one of
the Mee scampers, hid just overact grandmam-
Ma'e Vorktable, in his haste to catch g.be black
brush of pioisy's tail.; - and the shock bad
dislodged a.triangle of " plastering" from the
roof of , the . room,- cracked and seemed by time.
This had fallen directly upon the breakfast
table, to the Manifest danger of 'mamma's craps
and — sin - gra, not to speak of the head of
the baby, who eat tied in his high chair,
'finishing • hiticrust, after all the atom bad de-.
eerted him. • ' '
Mr,Appleten loohed up qtlite•coolly; and re•
`save a deal of trouble In pulling It
doWn, then!" •
"And break all our diehes, meanithili, lbesides
our necks!" returned the wife, as she 7 Swept the
fallen fragments from the cloth.. Wish it was
safely down, for ono!"
• "0, papa; do tear it down this spring, won't
you 9" cried Laura and Ebert, the °ideal girl and
boy, springing to his side at the - word; "We
can live eo nicely iti the shop, you'hnow, whila
the'other hduse ie building." ,
And then havea nice new home" eielaimed
Sarah, the second daughter.
. .."Yes—and this is such an old thingir added
Laura, looking, quite disdainfully'around her.
The Other children had clustered ,ahout the
group by'this time ; amp eye folio:tat& sister
Leura'e, and seven tengnee echoed itritiven dif
ferent tones "such an 'old thing I" •. ;1 ,
I" .It was grandmamma who spoke
this from her oorner,•in a voice a little, tremu
lous. I, Chil'en, it's man,* a One hasn't so tight
a ruff to this to cover
This was a alight reproof, as kindly taken Ba
it bad been given. It silenced the children,
however, for a moment, except Eben, who whis
pered to Laura;
"Grandma is most as old as the house, isn't
she?" wonder if she don'tleel bad to be re
minded of being so old ?" ''
"I don't know," whispered Laura, in return,
a little thoughtfully. " I 'dare say, so. Hero,
Jemmy and Sue, come help pick up grandma's
spools." •
Just here the tiller laid down his newspapers
with an energetic rattling, and folding his hands
nbove his head, spoke in a tono that aroused all
earn.
Wife and mother ! I've pretty mush mkdo
up my mind to build this next season—what
say?"
"I say, by all means I" answered the wife; but
her words. were hardly distinguishable in the
renewed shouts of the young ones, "Good! Her•
rah !" &o. •
. , .
"Hash !—you I" exclaimed the father. "Well,
mother, what'll your opinion about' it'?"
Grandmmama lifted her eyes from the grey
stocking she was knitting, and. one tear rolled
down the furrows of her cheek. She cleared
her throat, and tried to speak cheerfully.
I &pose it may as well be done now ever
—and mabbe it's best so!" she said, with a sort
of, sigh of resignation.
" Why, grandma! to be sure !" otied Sarah.
in a tone of surprise. "To have a new house !"
"And you shall have a dear, new, little bed
room in it," added Laura, more gently - ; "ri room
on the ground floor, eo that you won't have to
keep going up and down stairs to your chamber.
I saw it in papa's plan, and it was marked "Mo
ther's "Room." : ' '
"You're very kind,- Jetn, nioid old Mrs. Ap
pleton, to her son; and she went on knitting,
very fast, without, kowever, seemiag much
cheered by the assurance Lima had given.
As I have s aid the house was a hundred 'years
old. -It was built sow after the first settlement
was made in the town of R—, among the sto
ny hills of the Granite State. Its framer, the
great grandfather- of Laura Appleton, no doubt
thought he had , accobiplished a mighty jerk
when he put up the last clap-board, and took
his family from their-log house of one room,
into the unplastered, unfinished, barn like, "new
house ;"'for the old house was new then. Ho was
poor, and could not, fit up his "'shingle palace "
within; and ao his family shivered in it-winter
after - winter, until they; became acionstomed to
cold droughts rim cracks and crannies, and to
coals strapping from the wide-gaping fire-place,
'which sent up heat. in the centre of the aim
ney, and drew down cold air:cm , either aide.
Leintiel Appleton, son of the first builder, bad
"revised" and improved" the mansion before
bringing to its wide heirth-stoni his young Wife
—the "grandmamma", of later days: Since
that day it, had undergone many repairs' and Al
terations, being ealarged as children ulustered
around the-young couple. , Now those Children
had grown into mei:fond women, and were scat •
terod far and 'wile over, the whole tont:dry—all
hut one, the youngest of all, who_ sheltered his
home circle under the 'decaying roof of the!‘old
homestead."
• .. • . • .
Now, his nine noisy children had outgrown
the low rooms- and' narrow stairwaYs, ea. - their
mother thought., Certainly any stranger. would
have wondered where beneath that roof so many
flaxen heads found room to be stowed away
nightly.
The days of the old house were ntimbered.
On the very morning of which I have spoken,
the father cominenced the work of destruction by
removing an old chest of drawers, little used,
that had been hie grandmother% into a; niche
of " the shop nearby. Banana, closets and
chairs followed, os day after day went by, ...with
ail such lesser articles as conld,be spared kora
daily use. The old bonen was •searched from
garret to cellar by at least-a dozen pair Of 'prY
ing eyes, as it bad' never- been'open since. Its
"house warming," a hundred years before... B
o discoveries were 'made! So many °Met;
tars and lockets; with trumpery 'of all kinds, as
Laura's mamma called it, did Laura hoard avisy
in her trunk for her own private investigation I
The days of the old house were finished as
well ae numbered. The last one came. In the
morning tbe bed, trundle bed - and cradle" were
carried into the already crowded lower mire of
the shop. • Grandma'a rocking .obair followed-;:
and after dinnerthe sooty queen of the black ,
kitchen, the cracked cooking stove, :disgorged
its throat full of ashes and went mournfully at..
ter, borne on the shoulders of one man anti two
boys. -
One tin dipper, one cup and saucer, and six ,
bine plates,•a knife box, and a broken table,,
composed the !whole stook of furniture now . left.`
With the help-of theswarticles, the - Appleton'S'
succeeded in making , a last meal of bread and
chiles% in theirhomestead,,keeping, themselves
merry by jokes upon the tea eervice., After this
final enpper,lames Appleton bundled baby
well in a couple of window-onrtains the last of
their kind ; mamma rnt her apron over her head;
and took up plates, cup and saucer; .grandma:,
brushed the crumbs careful fromthe old table,in- ;
to the tin dtpper, and rut the knife-box over it;
and ail went into prooessionont of the old house: •
The limping table was soon helped ont. by Eben
and Joseph and "home" was empty- ,
It was not long left so howeVer, for the young
Appletone after establiehlak baby in Ids -shop
quarter, - hurried back to carry out plan which,
nt
they had proposed to thenelees some Weeks - be:"
fore; namely to have a grand carouse by moon
light, in the deserted and doomed.old _house.
Coin over - with us father, won't you?" ask- •
edJoseph very confidently.
No, ' answered the father leaning his head, •
on his hand, as thougbfatigned. " I don't nutoh - '
like itd" ,
The spirits of the children were too high to -:
be lowered by this reply"; end over 'they rnshed,ii
headed by Master Eben. -
" Hurrah," he shouted as be jumped in.
faint eoho seemed to come from an sides of the 0*
kitehen, finch as be had never noticed when
had.been filled. It would have frightened hint_e l
had
,he been alone. But the glad voices and ,
danoing feet of his brothers and • slaters sooii''' -1
drowned these echoes of desolation.
They played "hide and Beek," " blindman's
buff," and "hunt the slipper," danced, skipped,
sang and screamed, until the far-off villltge 'bell
struck for nine. Involuntarily all looked up foi '
ther.clock to strike ; but it Was gone,•and thei ,
knew it was 'time far thein, too, to go.
id Let's have a grand good-bye , salute," cried ,
'en. And away they scampered up into the"
bare chambers. "'Good-bye—good-bye, old
house l" they shouted uproariously into every '•
corner. 'A startled mouse sprung out at , the-
Round, and shot across the loose boards of the .
floor. •
"Hat Mrs. Mousey ? you won't have your
house - Much longer !" And down.staire they:
event, pell-mell into the street, and Boron it.
Ten minutes later, half of them lay in their
beds upon the floor, while the other half was
preparing to follow—all except Laura, the
eldest. [Conclusion to•morrow.]
