Li' A military officer, residing at the time
of the occurrence we are about to mention, in
one of the small towns on the southern coast
of Ireland, was passionately fond of gambling,
and, one night, after losing all his money and
other valuables at the gaming table, offered to
stake his wife, a lovely woman, against all that
his opponent bad won from him. The offer was
accepted, the game played, and the offioer beat
en. The wife, indignant at her lord's seeming
want of affection, and little knowing the infatu
ation of gambling, determined on becoming the
property of the winner, seeing that the husband
had shown so little respect, not to say regard
for her. The husbana's honor being at stake,
he could offer no objection—the wife, who had
no children, accompanied her new master, and
the poor victim to the hellish passion of gaming
became a maniac! Often and often have we met
the poor fellow on the sea shore, his hands be
hind his back, gazing intensely across the broad
expansive ocean, as if he expected the return of
her on whom hie soul had doated, and still re
membered, from its bosom—wild and tempestuous

let him remember that he is entitled to but one
sixth of a seat, notwithstanding the shrewdness
of his business talent, the size of his mansion,
or the height of hie genius. His self-conceit
should not be the measure of his outer-man, and
his sixpense pays for no more stage room than the
modest man's by his side. So, therefore extra
ordinary men who put on the airs of swell-fish,
give the human kind a chance. Your privilege
is only an aliquot part of the world's enjoy
ments, and if we pay for as much as you, let us
have as much, despite the difference of our self.

I am much pleased with Mr. Henck's little manual 6 ,4 the
"Field Book of Railroad Engineers." With the presenta
tion of some of the most practical and useful of recognised
processes among railway engineers, he has given others
which, new at least in their present form, appear to possess
a mint of higher value than that of mere novelty—that of
being in general susceptible of available, not to say desira
ble, practical use. In conclusion while I think the design
of Mr. Ilenck's book is such as hittdapt it excellently well
to professional needs, 1 have pleasure in expressing my
cordial satisfaction with its execution, alike with the per
spicuity of arrangement effected by the author, and the ex
cellent typographical taste displayed by his publishers.
