ARRESTS FOR PASSING 00ONTERFEIT MONET.—
Three men, named James Fairman, .1. L. Flem
big and G. W. Fleming were arrested on Wed
nesday-night, about ten o'clock, for attempting
to pass several counterfeit notes on a shoemaker
in the Fifth Ward, named Gotleib Fox. The
three are raftsnaen from 'Penang° county, and
entered the store of Mr. Fox for the purpose of
pprehasing a pair, of boots. After selecting a
pair to snit them, one of the Flemings threw
dawn a $5 note on the Farmers' Bank of Ken
tucky.. Fox informed him it was counterfeit,
when he handed him a $lO on the Rochester
Bank, N. F. This was also ascertained to be
bad, and Fez immediately called for the watch,
and gave the raftsmen into custody. Oa their
way to the tombs, the Fleming who had offered
the notes attempted to break loose from the offi
cer having him in charge, and a desperate fight
occurred between the two. Both of them re
ceived severe wounds in the scuffle, but the
watchman finally got the mastery. During the
melee Fleming threw elegy his pocket book, and
after ho was safely lodged in the tombs the offi
cer went back and recovered the article. It
contained $3l in counterfeit money, $l4O in
genuine gold cola and a due dill for $Ol. Yes
terday the three were brought before Mayor
Volz, and, after an examination, committed to
jail for trial, in default of $1,600 bail.
STABBING CASE. —A dispatch was received
yesterday by Alderman Steel, from the Pros:*
eating Attorney of Washington county, request
lag him to have arrested a negro named Samuel
Lewis, a fugitive from justice from Washington
boroagh. A warrant was placed in the bands
of officer Rages, who in a short time succeeded
in taking the person designated into custody.
and lodging him i . jail. Lewis is charged with
stabbing a negro woman named Rebecca Skin.
nor. ..The affair occurred at a ball, in Cannons.
burg, last Christmas. Rebecca, it appears, was
his sweetheart, but, nothwithstanding, would
persist in dancing with other colored gentlemen,
which -so exasperated Lewis, that in a fit of
jealousy, be cat her very severely in the side
with a bowie knife. In the confusion he man
aged to make escape, and came over to this
city, where he has been running at large ever
since.. Ho will be scut hack to Washington for
trial.
Br referring to the advertisement of the
Chemical Dioramas, it will he seen that this
popular and beauti'ul entertainment will posi
tively elose on Saturday night. This evening
and to-morrow there will be no entire change
of views throughout 'the whole exhibition.
Those who have witnessed the great effect in
Milan Cathedral at , d Belshazzar's Feast, can
judge what is in store for them by witnetodng
the "Funeral of Napoleon" by the illusions
peculiar to the Chemical Dioramas. We doubt not
the closing exhibitions will be numerously at
tended. The day exhibition on Saturday should
be ° embraced by all who cannot attend in the
evenings.

wer and Michael M'Cloekey ware locked up iu
the Tombs, yesterday, to await an examination
on the charge of swindling a little boy out of a
valuable watch. The led is from Nl'Keesport,
and while perambulating the city on Wednesday,
in search of emt,loymeol, was met by these
scamps, who effircd to give him work on a raft,
which they alleged belonged to them. The three
proceeded together towards the Allegheny river,

on the way, Conner Ginned to take care 01
the boy's watch for him. As soon as possession
of it was secured, they clipped off. When ar
rested, the watch was found on the person of
Conner.
'RawElm or 111183 MAGGIE MITCEIELL —This
charming little actress takes a benefit to night,
and makes her last appearance but one. She
appears in two of Mrs. Barney Willisuis' favor
ite pieces --..Ireland as It Is," and In and Out
of Place,"—in the latter personating no less
than four different characters. Miss Mitchell
hae been only three years on the stage, and is
yet quite young, but her naivete st3le of acting
has already won for her hosts of admirers. We
commend the fair beneficiary to the public as
one richly deserving their bounty.
TUE CONNELLSVILLE RAILROAD OPENED —Our
citizens will all he pleased to learn that the cars
will commence running on the Counellsville rail
road on the 17th instant. The road hae been
•opened between West Newton and Layton Sta
tion, a distance of forty three miles from Pitts
burgh, and after the above date two trains will
be run regularly between these points. The
Youghiogheny boats will leave our wharf at such
hours as to make a direct connection with both
trains.
SELLING LIQVOR TO AN INTEMPERATE PERRON.
—Tho proprietor of a doggiry in the Fifth Ward,
named James Wilson, was held to bail, yeet r
day, by Alderman Parkinson, for selling liquor
to George Booth, after receiving notice not to
do so Booth is a man of intemperate habits,
and Wilson had been requested by his wife not
to give him any more liquor, but as the requrst
was disregarded, a prosecution was instituted.
BOARD OF TRADE. —The regular monthly
meeting of the Board of Trade and Merchants'
Exchange will be held, this evening, in the Hall,
on Fourth street. Members of the association
aro requested to he in attendance, as several
subjects of importance will be brought forward.
SMALL NOTE PROSECIITIOII.—A German named
Nicholas Muller, yesterday instituted suit, be
fore Alderman Parkinson, against a person lu
the employ of the City Flour Mills, for passing
a $3 note, contrary to the 49th section of the
small note law.
EVE learn that suit has been brought against
the steamer Philadelphia for running over and
destroying a large raft, on Tuesday. The acci
dent occurred about three miles below the city,
and is stated to have been unavoidable.
GETTING BETTER —We understand that Mrs.
Polly Campbell, of Braodock's Fields, who is
alleged to have been poisoned by her son-in-law,
is pronounced out of danger.
TIM DUQUESNE BOROUGH ELECTION.—The ta
king of depositions in this case we understand
will be closed to-day, and be taken up in the
Court of Common Pleas tomorrow.
COMMITTED TOIL COSTP.—JOIiII ZiMMCrILIRE was
committed to jail, yesterday, on a process from
court, for neglecting to pay the costs of a case

WEEKLY MONEY ARTICLE.

The market seems to bo easy this 'week; Its pulse is
steady, and beats natural enough; financial matters age
being brought, as well as they can, to a wholesome state,
- and soon we hope they will be in a condition to meet the
general wish. There is nothing indicating pressure at all;
demand on A No.l paper is comparatively small. The
speculative fever is not raging high; general business is
only moderately active and is comparatively a safe, sound
and legitimate one, hence demand for money is not inordi
nate. This and next week a great many notes fall doe in
our banks, and given for January balances which will
cause some activity In money matters; although many en
deavored to curtail their obligations at that time, still much
FM given that could not be avoided and will have to receive
protection this month. Prudence and caution dictates that
every one should curtail liabilities for some time to come;
many may not see the advantage just now, tut to those
who exercise It its results will be most salutary in the
event of any disaster that easy befal us. Wo know not
what is before us, to a certainty, and as we are just merg
ing from a very sad period in our history, let us in time of
pence prepare for war. Economy and retrenchment are
essential elements to make financial affair just what they
should be. We are rels lag on a bountiful harvest to set us
"right side up," but In the reed of a failure here, accom
panied with short supplies in Europe, and a continuation
of the war, will bring on us a disaster we have never yet
experienced. We bcpe, hosi'ever, for better things, and can
hardly think 1855 will be characterized by the sad events
of 1854. We have certainly started out right, and Uwe can
only get everybody to exercise the proper mode of conduct
ing business matters, we shall be fortified to weather the
storm, and come out at the end with something in hand•
There is an immense amount of unempleyed labor afloat,
and farmers should endeavor to secure it an raise an extra
supply of broadstuffs, ,itc.; we shall need all that can possi
bly be raised, and we believe our farmers germrally see the
necessity of such e Ports, and are doing what they can.

the mines of Calif . ..mirk and Australia.
