daily papt-ra a*• Notic signed by Prof. R. iu which he
states thut I was unauthorized to make use of it, and that
it w«s incorrectly stated and applied.
In reply—l presum'd that it he had written the letter,
be, of course, meant what was therein contained, and con
sequently required no authority from him to make the
same public. As regard' the assertion as to its in correct
ness, I hove the letter in my possession, and it speaks for
itself, nurd foreword os I have published. Messrs. Baum
gar ton A Heins are not Mr. Bohbock for
endot sement—their Pianos wore known, appreciated and
re vived the highest rommendations from the first artists,
long before Prof. R. saw lit to pass an opinion upon them.
My reason for publuhing tho extract was in the fact that

DAILY MORNING ROST*
TUESDAY MORNING
LITTLE EVA’S PRAYER
“Ob, Harry, my husband, why did you do
this?” The voice of her mother recalled Eva
from her partial swooo, and ebb opened her eyes
and looked up with such a heart-broken attempt
at a emilo upon her suffering little face,, that
Mrs. Olay ton turned aside to conceal her gather
ing tears.
• It aches so here,” she said, plaoing her hand,
upon her brow and speaking confusedly,. “ I
wonder what makes it?’* Ibcro was no. reply,
and Eva again closed her eyes. Too soon tbo
knowledge of what had transpired rushed back
to the sensitive heart of the child In isuch
bitter contrast to olden kind words and caresses.
With deep pain Mrs. Clayton eaw tears slowly
stealing through the closod lids, saw the little
mouth quiver, and then suddenly flinging herself
at her mother’s feet, and burying her faoo in her
Up, Eva gave fall vent to her grief.
“1 know now, it was papa who struck me, O
papa, papa!”
It was a long timo ere Mrs. Clayton succeeds
ed in calming down the tempest of sorrow raised
in the bosom of her gentle child; but all tears,
sooner or later, havo an end, and Eva’s, tod, at
last were dried. It*, was a comparative early
boar of the evening that Harry Clayton torned
his steps.towards his miserable home, and: (an
unnsual thing for him of late yearß) in a state
of perfect sobriety, haviug laid a wager with a
boon companion that he could keep sober for at
least one day, and fearing the taunts of this
friend, had kept the promise, which might .other
wise have been broken. Old memories were
busy at his heart as ho stole softly op the dark
stairs and the faces of his injured wife and child
roso up reprovingly before him. Ah, What
woald be not havo given in that moment cf
awakened remorso to blot from bis existence bis
past errors, throw off the ycke that held him
enthralled, and then retrieve by future deed&*b!s
deep fallen disgrace. Half ashamed of appear
ing io the presence of those whose, reproacbfal
eyes ho dreaded meeting, he paused boforo the
door on hearing voices proceeding the
apartment. It was the low tones of Eva that met
his car, kneeling at her mother’s feet, was
praying, aod fer him. .
“And Ob, my heavenly Father,” breathed the
sweet voice of tho child, ** although my head
acbes so very badly, forgive my poor papa for
striking'toe this moroiog—for indeed ha didn’t
know what bo didr-and teacb h ; m, holy
to love as as we still love him.”
With a painful distinctness did those feweim*
ply-sppirVn words fait upon the ears of her low
ering hearer. Tbe agony of a lifetime seemed
crowded into a small space. What, Eva, his
child, pleading for him, the cruel,
drunken father, and begging for the love he had
so long uod merciless withheld from them.
The thought was maddening 1 The next mo*
ment he had thrown open tho* door, rushed
into tbe apartment, and flinging himself dowo
besides them, with nn arm encircling each, cry
ing, brokenly :
“My wife! my child 1”
With a glad cry, almost a about, Eva’s otms
were thrown around his neck, while her clear
tones filled tbe half-darkened room with a gush
ing-like melody as she cried ;
“Ton have come back to us, dear papa. . You
will never leave us again, andyoa will not drink
any more, my own darling papa.” <‘ - r
“Never! never! my blessed child, whoso
prayer will have proved my salvation,” was the
scarce audible reply of the repentant man. “And
now, before that great God whom I have so out
raged, in tbe presence of those dear ones, whom
I hav© injured"beyond reparation, I swear that
no temptation, in whatever form presented,,shall
force me to 9werve/roin my. to-night’s resolve,
by pressing again to my lips tbo poisonous wino
cup. Ellen, my poor suffering wife, will you
trust me in this.?”-
But Mrs. Clayton bad fainted from joy and
surprise; and it was some time ere tbo affec-
tionate care of her husband and child could re
cover her and bring her to the knowledge of the
happiness which awaited her. A gush of teers
was the only reply she could make to the rc*
morse stricken man, who, kneeling before, her,
falteringly asked her forgiveness, and displaying
in every, look and tone suoh sincerity as sent to
her heart a thrill of hope and security which
had not, visited it for years.* *
Never was there a happier little group than
that aßsembleJ beside the window, wbero. the
previous evening, Mrs. Clayton bad sat with
such bitterness of feeling, almost despairing of
God’s mercy and jastioc. Eva, nestling in the
arms of tho restored husband and father, her
sunny head resting against his bosom, dbd
her clear eyes fixed upon his face, full of a child-
like trust and love, while beside him sat the
now smiling wife, with one hand tightly clasp*
ang his, as if she feared it was all a dream, from
which sho might still awake to a bitter cold
reality.
Suddenly, the moon, which had. hitherto
been obscured by drifting masses of clouds,
broke through its dark prison, showering- a
flood of light over the three, and dancing, in
many a. silvery wave upon the floor. Mrs.
Clayton pointed to it with a smile, as she said
earnestly.:
“It is a prophecy of what is to be. Why
may we not look opon it as a cheering omen of
the future, my husband.”
* * * * * • ,
Several years have woven their sunshine and
shadow into tho past since the events above re
lated ; and again we will look in upon the Clay
tons. The apartment to which wo would con
duct tho reader is very unlike the one where
poverty and desolation too truly marked it for
the drunkard’s home. A soft, warm carpet
covers tbo floor; a we!! filled book case and an
inviting sofa occupy tho two niches oach side of
the mantel piece; while tho cushioned chairs,
the pictures hanging against the wall, the rich
vases, the table with its solar lamp, throwing
over all a subdued light; the tightly drawn cur
tains, and warm, glowing fire in the grate
form a scene which could not bo eerpassed for
comfort and eleganco. Beside the table, with
bis eyes bent upon a book before him, sits a
man in tho fall vigor of manhood. Who wonld
trace in that noble, intellectual face, upon which,
rests a touch of sadness, the once bloated fea
tures of the miserable drunken outcast, Hurry
Clayton. It is even so. Tbe vow made on that
memorable night iu the far west has been, kept
faithfully, and once nnre has he taken hia place
in the good will and esteem of his fellow men.
His business affairs have been most prosperous
and wealth baslaio in profusion her golden offer-*’
iugs at bis feet.
And Mrs. Clayton, onco tho despairing -wife •
and mother—now, the happy trusting woman
Mark the expression of her face as she elands
by the mantel, an arm resting carelessly upon it
while her gnzo is turned upon a picture hanging
against tho wall opposite to her—no longer care

do her eyes fill with tears ns her glance lingers '
