CARD,
A FEW days since, I published an advertisement of my
Hamburg Pianos, In which an extract from a letter
from Prof. 11. Itobbcck, of this city, addressed to Messrs,
ilaumgartcn & Heine, cf Qamborg, the manufacturers,
vas Inserted. This morning 1 observed in several of tbo
daily papers a*• Kotic signed by Prof. R, in which he
states that I was unauthorized to make nse of it, and that
it was incorrectly stuted nud applied.
In reply—l presumed that if Ite had written the letter,
he, of course, meant wbat was therein contained, and con
sequently required no authority from him to make the
same public. As regards the assertion as to its incorrect*
ness, 1 Lavo the letter In my possession, and it speaks for
itself, word for word os I have published. Messrs Bantu
garten A Heins are net dependant upon Mr. Robboch for
endorsement— their Pianos were known, appreciated and
received the highest rommeodalioos from the first artists,
long before Prof. R. saw fit to pass an opinion upon them.
My reason for publishing tho extract was in the fact that
ho was v. ell known in the city, and cot bo uuse bia recom
mendation was necessary to establish tho merit of the
Pianos. In conclusion, I may add that they stand on thoir
own merit, and areendorßed by such men as List,Thalberg,
and others, solely on account of their merit,
labia CHARLOTTE BLUME.
NOTICE.
IN an advertisement of Mrs. Illume, In this paper, my
na i e is made use of in connection with >be Hamburg
Pianos. Such use is unauthorised by me, and, moreover,
the mut'er is incorrectly stated and misapplied. The factt
are thean : About a year ago I wrote to Baumgarten &
Heins, Piano makers in Hamburg, (Germany,) for a FUno
of a new and peculiar construction, and of which I furnish
ed a minute description. They replied that they did not
manufacture any such, aDd requested me to examine a
Piano ot their make sent ;o Mrs. Blume, at the same time
offering to furn sh me with a similar one,in ease I liked it.
I accordingly examined the instrument, but as it did hot
please me, I declined purchasing of them. I have since
tontrht HD-1 am now using a Piano from the factory of

LITTLE EVA’S PRAYER
Eagerly up the : crazy old staircase sprang a
-light bounding step, and softly through the dim
ball echoed the musio.of a child’s voice, beariog
in its strain BomeUiing joyful and exalting—a
sound that for years had not found its way to
that gloomy den of poverty. The child had
paused before the closed door of an apartment
which immediately opened ob those ringing tones
reached tho listening ear of its inmate, and a
woman still young and very beaatifal, despito
tne wan, haggard expression of her face, stood
upon the threshold. D
exclaimed, ciaaping the

fearful—o, to fearful I—that some acoident had
befallen yon! I could not afford,” eh o added
a faint smile, 11 to lose you, just now, for.
yon aro all I have to love in this world, my Era.”
There was an inexpressible sadness visiblo in
the. speaker’s tones, and the bright glad look
which had irradiated the sweet face of the child,
vanished liko sunlight from a snow-wreath* giv
ing place to one of mingled sorrow and reproach.
“ I am so sorry, dear mamma, to hare fright
ened you so, 1” sho said, eagerly, “ bnt indeed,
indeed I couldn’t help it. T got'lost in a great '
wide street f had never been in before, and at;
last I sat down on a door-step quit© tired out,
and cried because I was afraid I would never
find my way home again; and then a kind
strange gentleman—o,- so good and noble!—
stopped and asked what was the matter; and
when I told him, ho took hold of jny hand and'
offered to show mo the way back; and then, as
we walked along, ho asked all about ns, and I
told him how poor wo were, and bow—how—"
(hero tho words came almost hesitatingly)—
“ papa would drink bad liquor, that made him
cross and angry; and ho said something about
its being a great pity, and ho Baid ho would
come and see ns; and when he bado me good
bye, he gave me this. Seel” and the child.held
up 0 Binning piece of gold to her mother’s gize.
Mrs. Clayton took the money almostmeclmi
eally, while a deep flush mounted to her palo
oheek. .
" Have we indeed fallen bo low that tie band
of charity should be extended to us!” she mur
mured bitterly; “ Oh, my God, why has it omae
to this!” and then, with a sudden revulsion of
feeling, she cried, “ Father, forgive me, I know
not what I say I And, 0, let thy choicest bless
ings be showered upon tho path of our generous
unknown benefactor, whose munificent gift will
bring many comforts unused to our gloomy
abodo!” and sinking upon her knees, whilo tears
of mingled joy and grief suffused her eyes,, she
drew-one arm around Eva’s form, murmuring,
“ Pray for me, dWrling; X have been sinful and
repining, to-day, and cannot pray as I ought!" '
And whilo sbo knelt there, upon the air arose
those clear melodious tones, and up to the throne
of grace floated that childish petition, simply
worded, but none the less heeded. For does not "
God love little children, and hath ho not said,
“ Suffer them to come to unto me, and forbid
them not, for of Bncb is the kingdom of Heavet!”
It was with a spirit subdued and. chastened
that Mrs. Clayton at length aroße from her knees.
The prayer had souhdeJ to her almost like a
reproach and displayed her own discontent in a
clearer light. “ I will never complain again,”
she mentally exclaimeSas “ but will take a les
son from my gentle, patient child.”
For Beveral moments she did not speak, but
remained Bilontly gazing, holf-mournfullv, half
fearfully down upon tho face, now nestling
against her bosom. Did she read, in tho pure
depths of those eyre—in the spiritual loveliness
of those matchless features—a look such as an
gels might have worn or why did she clasp her
closer in those sheltering arms, mentally vjacu-"
latiug: “She is one of God’s chosen. *1 never
can hope to keep hecloog.”
And then, when the little girl looked up,
startled by the movement, she soothed her by -
kind words and carresses. „
“Yon are, looking pale and tired,” she said,
twining caressingly those carls of pale gold
aronnd her clasped fingers. “ Your long walk
has been too mnch "for you, and nothing bat a
good, sound sleep will recover your exhausted
spirits. Da yon not see that the sun has already
gone to rest, and that your hour for retiring has
come.”
“ Let me Bfay up a little while longer, please,”
pleaded the child so winningly that she was not
rofased.
Twilight deepened into night. Myriads of
stars stolo out into tho quiet sky, following in
tho train of the bright-orbed moon, whoso silvery
rays peeped through tho unshuttered, uncurtain,
ed window, and rested lovingly upon tho golden
curls of Evo, who still lay with her hend pillow
ed upon her mother’s bosom.' - For a long time
she had remained silent, find so motionless that
one would have deemed her asleep, but that the
bright oyea were wide open end fixed earnestly
upon the face Lending over her. There was a
Bad, troubled light burning in their clear depths,
and Mrs. Clayton bent stltl lower to read more
clearly their expression.
“ Of what is my little Eva .thinking "that she
should look so unhappy she asked, in n tone
that sounded strangely sweet in that shadowed
room. The answer came, accompanied by almost
a Bob. ,
“ Ob, mamma,—mamma, how I wish we could
go back to the old homestead, where wo used to
be so hippy.”
Mrs. Clayton choked.dowu a sigh. Ah! many
and many a time had her own lips silently echo
ed tho same prayer. Many a time had her heart
gopo back longingly to the dear home of her
childhood, in tho hands of strangers;
With a violent effort she swept back the thoughts
which threatened to agitato her beyond control;
and replied cheerfully to the questioning look
which now sought her’s. - •
“ Ycb, Eva, I should like much to go back
again, but that at present is impossible. You
know we are very poor, and cannot afford to buy
the old place from those who have it in their
possession ”
“Bat why did papa sell it all?” questioned
the child sorrowfully.
“ Because—because ho was obliged to,” was
tho hesitating reply.
She would not pain that loving, childish heart
by telling her the whole trntb, and say in tho
excess of her wonndod feelings—he cruelly tore
from me tho only link which bound me to my
native village—the spot endeared to me by many
fond recollections—to pander to a debased
tito for strong drink ; ho has brought upon mo
ruin and misery, and why should I longer oaro
for him.
“ Shall I sing that little hymn yon love so

child s mind from so painful a subject, and re

those long silken lashes drooped heavily and Eva

softly, she carried her to the humblo couch, and
having laid her upon it, bent down and pressed
her lips to the unconscious brow of tho youth
