named George Milton, Frank Millstein and Geo’
Milletein were arrested yesterday, charged by

our c&ce for some weeks past, a newly invented
article called “Concentrated Lye”, which is an
excellent and cheap substitute for potash.
Twenty five cents worth will make as much lye
as four times the quantity of potash ; and the
alkali thus made is more powerful than that pro.
.duoed from potash. It cleans the ink from typo
better ihon aoy mixture heretofore used for that
purpose. It is also good for making hard or
soft soap. Several families of our acquaintance
who have used it, speak highly of its merits. It
costs about one fourth less than the articles gen
erally ÜBCd for making ooap, while fonr timed

—Tiia excellent actor and gentleman- takes a
benefit at our theatro to-night, when and where
we hope to aeo the house crowded to its utmost
capacity. He performs two of his best charac
ters, viz: Pclruchio in Bhakßpere’s comedy of
‘‘Taming the Shrew,” and Luke Fielding in the
affecting drama of tho “ Willow Copse.” In the
line of character which Luke Fielding is a typo
wo doubt whether Mr. Couldock has an equal
he has certainly no superior on the American
l)oardd. His Petruchio is also an admirable ape
icimcn of genteel comedy. Wo commend the
beneficiary to-night to tho lovers of the lcgiti
mate drama.
Smali, Note Pbosecution.— a prosecution was
yesterday instituted before Alderman Donaldson
against Mr. Samuel Shore, tax collector of the
Sixth Ward, for a violation of the not of Assem
bly, relative to tho passage of small notes. The
prosecutor is William Gilliam, who, however, is
not the principal in tho suit. The notes, on
which the suit is brought, are alleged to have
been paid to James M’Gregor, E-q. Tho statute
infiicts a fine of $lOO on nay public officer found
iguilty. . The sum recoverable from a private
-citizen is only $23. An examination of the case
'will be had before the magistrate on Saturday

Shipment opoCoat..—We learn from Mr. S.
'Thomas, look-tender at Lock No. 1 , that since
■Saturday last, on which day the present rise in
the river commenced, about seventy-five pairs
■of boats and bargee, containing 1,650,000 bushels
•of ooal, havo passed through that lock. This is
.an overage of 22,000 bushels to tho pair, a
rafhez- larger estimate than usual, but which Mr.
T. thinks is correot, as tho boats were larger
than any that bad ever passed through before.

turea of onr Money market, except that the demand for
money In general has not been quite so great this as last
week. The offerings in the various banks continno large;
still the.banks seem disposed to be ns liberal a. prudence
«tll permit. An active, and no believe a healthy, business
is now transacted in the cit/.
Money is invested frtoty in Prrduce of all kinds. The
demand in tho various markets makes prices favor holders
very materially. The present state of affn rs In this branch
of trade will yield a rich harvest to speculators, at tho ex
pense of tho consumer. Those in moderate circumstances
are thus almost deprived o 1 thu articles of actual necessity.
The crops, to be sure, were short lasi year, but there ij still
enough to put us through until the next harvest, though
speculators may tell ub the reverse; there is one thing
very evident, the majority of consumers being unable to
pay the exhorbitant prices demanded they will curtail the
purchase or those articles which are taxed beyond their
actual worth. '
Late advices from Europe show a decline in Breadstuff's
and Provisions. Prom all present accounts we may confi
dently look for an abundant harvest hero this year, which

rable, and shows that there has been a check in the expan.
sion of the loans and discounts, which has. been going on
lately in the face of a declining spec o line. It is encou ra
ging, compared with last week, and we hope for a continu
ance in this contraction. It is anticipated, however,' that
the hanks will gain in specio next week, as Ihere will be
an arrival of California supplies. There is also some in
crease in demand for loans on call, but prime paper Is
scarce at the bankH and on the street. Cnba, Spain and
war i« tho theme of comm-nt in Wall street; exciting no
little interest in commercial circles, and many are ready to
predict a hostile collision in tho Gulf within sixty days.
The Eastern money markets present do material chaoge.
From California advices there appears still a great strin
gency incite money market, continued mercantile fjiluren,
and trade io a very unsettled condition.
European advices show Cofon in aclive demand and
pricea firmer, and there is still a disposition to Invest In onr
Securities. These important items, connected with tho
fact that thcro is a continued decline in our impor's, and
the southern rivers bciug again navigable (which will hring
cotton forward actively) show a healthy and very desirable
stale of thing*.
