was inserted. This morning I observed la several of tbe

states t hat I was unauthorized to make use of it r and that
it was Incorrectly otatod and applied.
In reply—-I presumed that if he had written tho letter,
he, of course, meant what was therein contained, and con
sequemly required no authority from him to make the
same public. As the asajrtianas to Its incorrect

endorsement—-their Pianos were known, appreciated and
received the highest rommendations from the first artists,
long before Prof. R. saw fit to pass an opinion upon them.
sly reason for publishing tho extract was in the fact that

ing of the Senate. He therefore called upon
Mr. Griffin, of Charlestown, of the House, to
take the Chair. The Committee had summoned
the ladies connected with the sohool at Roxbnry,
one of whom, the Lady Superior, Mary Aloysio,
was preaent at the opening of the meeting. The
Lady Bnporior was accompanied by Samuel May,
Esq, who stated that she had with.her a state
ment of the Iransaotion, signed by five ladies who
preside over the school. .
The Sergeant-ot-Arms then administered an
oath to tho Lady Superior, after whioh the etate
ment was read by the Chairman of the Commit
tee. The statement is mainly the same as that
published in the Advertiser. The Committee
then proceeded to an examination of the Lady
Superior, who testified aa follows:—I should
judge that the Committee numbered about twen
ty Individuals, . I attended them in their exami-.
nation of the house; one of the Committee, who
gave his name as Mr. Evans, tarried after the
others had left and told mo he.was once a Cath
atio in St. Mary’s Churob, Baltimore, and that
he .desired to return to the Churoh. He asked
me if I would give l him permission to visit me,
saying he would like to have some pleasant con
versation with mo. 1 declined giving him per
mission. He asked if the Bishop would object •
to his visiting me. I told him he wonld not,
though we received bnt few visitors. He shook
hands with me twioe and appeared very famil
iar. I was much offended at his conduct then,
and feel more indignant every time I. thing of it.
I told the Committee,. when they entered tho
house, that a lady was sick. When the mem
bers of Committee entered her chamber; I was
present. They bent so closely to her that she
has since Btated that she felt their breath... I
had previously desired the patient to remain
quiet, as if asleep, if the Committee entered.
While I was conducting a part cf thc Committee,
other members of it were going about the bouse
by themselves, examining the closets, sinks, &0.,
&o. I was not present when one of the gentle
men took hold of the Rosary. Upon being ask
ed if she conld desoribe the gentleman who de
sired an interview with her, the witness replied
that she contd not well describe him, but that
she could recognize him if she saw him. Mr.
Evans, of the Senate, was then
whereupon the witness said that he was not-the
gentleman who requested tho interview, and who
gave his name. Subsequently, Mr. Hiss, of Bos
ton, was introduced, when the witness said
that was the gentleman who gave his name as
Evans.
Tba Lady Superior waa then farther ques
tioned by Mr. Charles Halo, Jr., editor of the
Advertiser, as to whether she had read the ar
ticles in the Advertiser, and whether eho regarded
the statements therein as oorrect. The witness
answered in the affirmative to theso questions.
Mr. Dawley, of the' Senate Committee,. then
questioned the witness more particularly os to
the conduct of tho Committee on visiting the
chapel. She stated that the membors of the
Committee, to the number of ten, had opened
the door before she arrived She had intended
to have opened the door and admit the Commit
tee ; bnt the door was opened before she had :
time to do so, and there were so many gentle
abont the door that she could not enter herself.
While in the chapel, the gentlemen were en
gaged in loud conversation, which she consider
ed very improper. The lady at her devotions in ~
the chapel was startled when the gentleman en
tered, and attempted to leave by a door which
she found locked. One of the gentlemen asked
herseveral questions which Bhe deolined an- '
swering in the ohapel. The gentleman followed
her without the chapel when the conversation
was resumed.
Samuel May,. Esq., then interrogated the wit
ness as to the soene in the chapel; bnt her an
swers did not vary materially from her previous
testimony. Several other gentlemen tbeh put
questions to the witness, when the meeting was
adjourned to meet to morrow morning at 9J
o'clock, to hear the testimony from the other la
dies of the institution. The Lady Superior was
acoompanied to day by a sister of Bishop Fitz
patrick and by Rev. Mr, O’Brien.
Talent versus Arlitoeraoy.
The Budden loss ,of prestige by the aristo
cracy of England seems to be the fulfillment of
Carlyle’s strange prophecies in his Latter Day
Pamphlets, published a few years Bines. Here
is a passage from ono of them which the “ gov
erning class ” there could perhaps have studied
to some profit when written,' but they are
“moribund'’ now, nnd no medicine can save
them:
“Who ore available to your officers in Down
ing street ? All the gifted souls, of every rank
who are born to you in this goneratlon. These
are appointed by the true eternal ‘ Divine Bight’
which will never become obsolete, to be your
Governors and Administrators; and precisely as
yon employ them or neglect to employ them
will yOnr Btate be favored of Heaven or disfa
vored. These noble youDg souls, you can have
them on either of two condition; and on one
of them since yon are here in the world, you
must have them. As your allies aqd coadjntore,
or failing that, as your natural enemies; which
sha» it be? This is the question of questions.
What talent is born to yon ? , How do yon em- -
ploy that? The orop of spiritnal talent that is
b«n to yon, of hnman nobleness, and intellect
and heroio faculty, this IS infinitely more Impor
tant than your crops of cotton and corn; or her
rings, or whale oil, which tho newspapers re
cord with such anxiety every: seaacn. This is
not quite counted by seasons, therefore the
newspapers are silent; bnt by generations and
centuries, I assure yon it becomes amazingly.
sensible; and surpasses, as Heaven does Earth,
all the corn and nine, and whale oil, and Cali
fornia bullion, or any other crop, you grow.”
Law Suits.— Napoleon, in a conversation
with Las Caseß, at St. Helena, dwelt upon the
evils arising from law Baits, which, he said
were an absolute leprosy, a social cancer. Mv
code, he said, had singularly diminished law
suits, by plaoing numerous cases within the
comprehension'of every individul. But there
remained much for the legislator to accomplish.
Hot that he coaid hope, to prevent men from
quarrelling;'this they hsve done in all ages;
cat he might have prevented n third partyln
society from living upon the quarrels of the
other two, and even stirring up disputes to.pro
mote their own interests. It was, therefore, my
intention to establish the rale that lawyers
, 'should never reoeive fees except when they gain?-
ed cases.
