The battle of Independence had been fought Seven hundred soldiers had met.nearly three times their number, and come off victorious.' Six hundred and thirty men were loft dead on, the field ; among them were, one general officer, four colonels, two lieutenant colonels, seven captains, and twelve lieutenants. Multitudes had perished in the morara and tie bayous. ■ Of tho surviving, upwards of tyo; hundred and eighty were wounded, and there Were eight hun dred prisoners. Only seven men are known to have escaped from the field. And yet, incredi ble as it may seem, this bloody engagement bad 00Bt the Texans the lives of only seven men, and less than thirty had been; wounded. It was incredible, and when the Commandef-io- Chicf awoke the next morning, and heard tho facts, ho asked, “la this eo, or is it only my dream?” ’ - J At ten o’clock in the morning, Gem Houston sent a detachment of men to bury the enemy’s dead who had fallen in battle; but decomposi tion bad taken plaoe so rapidly, the troops re turned aDd reported they could pot execute his’ order! This extraordinary cifouroetanoe excited the greatest surprise, and the Mexioan prisoners accounted for it by resolving it,dike the defeat of the previous day, into “ a malignant blast of destiny.” i In the meantime, a number df Texans were scouring tho prairie throughout the day, and bringing in prisoners The grass was every where four or five feet high, and those who had not been taken tho day before, wefe bow crawl ing away on their their hands and-kiiees, hoping thus to effect their escape., : Santa Anna had-not yet been taken, bnt the .victors,' wore scouring evety part of the field in searob of the Dictator. “Yon will find tho Hero of Tampioo,” said Huujton, “if you find him at all, making hia retreat on all fours aod he will be dressed as bad at least as a common soldier. Examine closely every man you find.” Lieutenant Sylvester, a volunteer from Cin cinnati, was riding over tbe prairie, on a fine h. rae, about three o’clock in the afternoon, vbru he saw a man making his way “towards Vinoo’s bridge. The moment ho found himself parsued, the fugitive fell down in the grass. Sylvester daahed on in that direction, and his horse came very near trampling him down. The man sprang to bis feot, and apparently Withont the slightest surprise, looked Mb oaptor full in the face. He Was disguised in a miserable rus tic dress. IVe woro a akin cap a round jacket, and pantaloons of bluo domestic cotton, with a r-air of coarse soldier’s Bhoe.B But hia face and his manners bespoke, too ''plainly, that he be longed to a different class than his garb be tokened ; and underneath big coarse, disguise, Sylvester saw that ho were a "shirt of the finest linen cambric. “Yon arc an officer, I percei-e, air,” said the horseman, raising his cap polite ly. " No, soldier,” was tho reply; and hedrew ■abt a letter in Spanish, addressed to Almonte. When ho ear; there waa no hope of eßoapo, he inquired fjr Genera! Houston. By this time, ■ijlveeter had been joined by several of his comrades, and mono ting bis prisoner behind mm, they rode off together on tho same horse, to tho camp, ccveral miles, distant. As hr t.aesed the Mexican prisoners, they exclaimed' aitii great surprise na they lifted their cap-: " F.I i'rni-irn-r Iu a stogie moment, tho newts spread through toe camp that General Santa Anna was a prison ■r, and the Dictator was taken to'Houston. The G cueTal was lying on the-ground, and haviDg i-iept little during the night in consequence of his wound, had now fallen into a doze. Banta Anna eamo up behind him, and took his hand. Houston roused himself, and turning over, gazed up in the face of tho Mexican, who extended his left arm, and laying hia right hand on his heart, said, “ I am General Antonio Lopez de S nta Anua, President of tho Mexioan Repub bo. and 1 claim to be -year prisoner of war” Honeton waved his h'ud to a box—for ft was the' • nly eoat in the camp—and asked bis prisoner to be seated. Ho then sent for Almonte, who spoke English perfectly, and requested him to act as interpreter. Ia the meantime, Santa Anna bad taken hia seat, and glancing hia eye occasionally around too camps with a timid expression, pressed the sides of his brcs3t, with both bends, and gave two or three half suppressed groans, like a man who was suffering deep pain. An interesting incident took place about-, this time, which is thus related of General Rusk: “At the time Santa Anna was brought into our camp, I was' walking With young Zavala. (The reader will rnoognizrt in this yno>bfnl character, and son of tho noble and venerable Zavala, who distinguish ed himself as tho friend of Texan independence.) Wo approached him together. Santa Anna Ter cognized young Zavala at once, and advanced to : meet him with great apparent cordiality, utter ing many expressions of kindness, such as nre customary among tho Mexicans on such occa sions, several of which I remember. Among’ other things he exclaimed, “Oh 1 my friend; the son of my early friend;” with which,:and other exclamations'in th'o satno strain, ho ombraoed young Zavala, with high indications of apparent feeling, and I think, dropping a tear.' Young Zavala returned his greeting with that deference which would have been due to his former rank, and power; but at the some time, emitting from his countenance an expression t have scarcely seen equalled on any oooa6ion. ptis looks seemed to witbor Santa Anna, and staring him full in the face, he replied immediately, with great modesty, ‘lt baa been so, sir.’ Santa Anna evinced plainly that he was much mortified.” Almonte approached his oaptive General with evident rcepcot and grief, and thofollowingcon versatiou -ook place between thetwo command ers: Houston, in tho meantime, lying on the ground, resting on his elbow. Great pains has' been taken to get as nearly as possible the exact words used by tho speakers,.and those who were present at tho interview, have assured us t that: all here related they do remember, and-they re collect nothing olse of importance. Santa Anna —(After embracing 1 Almonte,* and recovered perfectly from his embarrassment,; rose, apd advancing with tho air of one born to command, , said to General Houston) " That man may consider himself born to no common destiny, who has conquered tho Napoleon of the West; and it now remains for him to be gener ous to the vanquished.” Houston —‘ 'You should have remembered that at the Alamo.” S A. —“ You most be aware that f was justi fied in my course by the usages of war.
