MONDAY MORNING
Ihtkbksiihq *0 Tax Patbbs. —Sinoe January
Ist, 1,240 persona have been committed to jail,
for vagrancy ; of thia number 460 were commit
ted daring the month of March. -From June 18,
1854, to the first of January last, only 1,622
were committed, thus showing a large inorease
over last year. The increase in vagranoy is
Btartling, and should not fail to attraot the at
tention of tax payors. The evil is becoming
worse every year, and demands that something
should be done speedily to prevent its still fur
ther progression. We know of no remedy which
we think would so well as a Bouse of
Correction, to build which would not coat more
than ia required to support these vagrants for n
conple of years. Place them in ench an estab
lishment, and instead of being a burthern to
tax-payere, they would not only Bupport them
selves, but aleo contribute to the revenue of the
county. We therefore, hope that our citizens,
instead of agitating the project of aohain gang,
which scorns to have mist with approval from a
number, wilt endeavor to secure the establish
ment of u House of Correction—the only effi
cient cure of the growing evil of vogranoy.
A-Man Tors bt Doas A bricklayer named
Timothy Hessen, who resides cn Magee street,
in the Eighth Ward, while at work on an oven
m a yard on Liberty street, on Friday, was bad
ly lacerated by three large dogs. Pieces of flesh
were torn out of his legs and arms, and numer
ous wounds wore inflicted on other parts of his
body. On Satdrday, Hasseu-made information
before Alderman Wilson, against Phillip Freits
ban, John Miller and William Auth, for assault
and battery with intent to kill. He alleges that
these ihreo men, although not the owners of the
dogs, hissed the animals on, and when he at
tempted to defend himself,.they held and struck
him. Too aocused, however, ntiego that thoy
were hunting rats with tho dogs, and that the
attack upon Haseen was entirely an accident.
The ’Squire, after a hearing of tho case, held
the defendants to bail in tho sum of $4OO each,
for their appearance nt Court.
Ekiobakts fob the West. —An unusual num
her of emigrants have already, passed through
this city for the West, and there seems to be no
abatement yet to the flood. Every steamer that
IiES kit for the Upper Mississippi has taken out
hundreds of settlers, while the city is still
thronged with others awaiting an opportunity to
depart- Oa Saturday, the atoamer Grand Turk
left with about 300 on board, for Galena and Du
buquo- Toeso emigrants, we understand, in
tend settling mostly in lowa and Illinois. The
Jliunrsota Belle will leave on Tuesday, with at
least fifty families, for St. Paul and. Btillwater,
Minnesota Territory. Eight or nice of these
families are rrom the Ninth Ward.
Sevkbe Sentence —William Clefosd, convict
ed of sclliDg liquor to an intemperate woman,
after being notified not to do so by her husband,
was sentenoed on Saturday, by Judge M'Clure,
to pay the costs of prosec tion, a fine of $5O to
the Commonwealth, $2O to the prosecutor, and
nndergo on imprisonment of sixty days in the
county jul. This eeQtODCe, we believe, is the
citrume limit of the law, and will probably deter
other whisky eellcrs from transgressing again.
Judge M’Clure gave notice some time since that
he would act severely with each cases, and tbis
Instance gives satisfactory proof that* he will
keep bis promise.
Theatre.—A rc-cneagemcnt has been effect
ed by the Manager with Miss Chorlotte Cramp
too, and that lady will appear each night this
week. Wo ere glad to hear this, as she did not
have an opportunity to exhibit her full* powers,
last week, owing to the hoarseness with which
she was troubled. She is announced to-night to
appear in the character of Marianna, in Sheri
dan Koowieu’ play.cf iho "The Wifi*,” a part,

Lscttre os Astronomy. —Mr. Daniel B.

House, on Ftiday night, before the Society for
the Increase and Diffusion of Useful Knowledge,

A .Select Cotillion Party, which promises
to be a pleasant offtir, is announced to come off,

.POTsmmaa Steak Cadtitet Vactopt, ) .
February 22,1565. f
We hereby certify, thatduring the last Iwelvo month*
we hare used Hoppers'Pat nt Plane, and do not hesitate
to recommand it to Cabinet-Makers and a* su
perior to any other Plane in us a . Weconsiderlt peculiarly
adapted to planing oak, cherry, walnut, and all sorts of
hardwood, and for planing vene rs.it '8 far mnerinr tn
the old mcd« of scraping, besides being a great earing of
time One mao, by using tbia Plane, will.plane more
veneers than five men can do by any other plane or method
in use. H. H. Etas & Co.
To Moss P. Eaton, Fgq-:
Dear s?f—l have examined Hopper's Patent Ranch
Plane, and believe it to be a most excellent article for the
nse fqr. which it is Intended,as a combination or plane and
Scrater. - '
It is particularly-adapted to planing veneers, and it does
not require one-fourth the time or labor of the old method;
and I have no donbt, when its properties become generally
known, but that it will entirely ; tipersedo the former te
dious and laborious custom.
I most cheerfully recommend it to all persons engaged in
the Cabinet business, as from my knowledge of It, thnre is
nothing os well fitted to give a smooth and beautifhl finish
to veneers as the Hopper Patent Bench Plano.
