The Oslo*.—Wo shall pursue the controversy
with onr neighbors of tho Union no further, un
less they persist in their attache. If they are
not particularly severe this morning, we shall
probably let it pass, and give them tbe benefit of
the first word and the last. All we have con.
tended for about the Custom House is that there
should be a full, thorough and open investiga
tion, before any aot of relief is asked from Con
gress. That is dne to the public, and all parties
concerned. And we have only to say forth tr (
that Mr. M’Calmont and others should not, in
the pride of official stations and success, feel at
liberty to call others, who hold no offices, lion,
dances, &o. without provocation.
We publish to*day a communication from Wm.
A. Hill, late. Treasurer of the Pittsburgh and
Steubenville Railroad Company, in which he ro
plies to some portions of the rcpor* of the Audi
tors appointed to investigate his accounts. Mr.
Hill has handled large sums of money fcr the
Company, and transacted a large amount of
business in its behalf. Some of his charges for
services and commissions wore not allowed by
the Auditors, and, as that disallowance swells
the balance against him considerably, he claims
an opportunity to explain the transactions, and
reply to the remarks of the Auditors in relation
to hie modo of book keeping. At the request of
a number of our patrons we give his oommoni
cation a place in our columns, though it has &p.
peatel in another paper before. Mr. Hill**
character as a correct business man is worth
muoh to him at the present time ; and wc can
see nothing to impair confidence in bis integrity
and oorreotheßS in biß accounts with the Com
pany of which he was Treasurer for so long a
time. His charges for compensation are the
subjeots of litigation, we believe; and all par
ties will have a chanoo to be heard. Meantime,
Mr. H.’s communication will be read by many
with attention. While we have great confidence
in the business ability of those who audited his
accounts, we yet hope our friend, Mr. Hill,
will come out of the controversy without loss or
injury.

Th« jilcdlnini on the Gsar’i Dsath. |
We gave, eome time ago, a column of revela
tions from the spirit world, whioh were Bent to i
tbo editor of the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, t
He received, besides, sundry other communica
tions, many of which were correct in some par
ticulars ; but those from professional mediums
were generally wrong. The Bulletin says :
“ Amos Mitchell" was singularly happy in his
.commercial guesses. Hiß quotations of consols,
and bis reports of the breadstuff's, ootton and
provision markets, were literally oorrect, and if
he can givo us future proofs ot his aptness in
foretelling the state of trade abroad, we will in
sure him good wages from some of our commer
oial and financial men. But, to the professional
mediums wc cannot give a good character. They
either have not brains enough to make a good
guess, or their dealings are altogether with false
and lying spirits. If they seek employment
among other journals, as mediums of intelligence,
to supply news in advance of the telegraph, we
beg they will not apply to us for “ a character.”
We should be obliged to insert a clause that they
were given to lying.
It is to bo regretted that our effort to prove
the substantiality and the accuraoy of the fash
ionable spiritual revelations has proved so oom
ploto a failure. Wo were quite ready to reward
the medium who should report the circumstances
with absolute correctness, and had been calcu
lating how many hundred dollars a week we
should give to sccuro permanently tbo services
of such a “happy medium.” But we shall have
to fall back on the steamships aud the telegraph
Spiritualism is a humbug; the raps are not
worth a rappee; “it’s no use knocking any more.”

Cartons Prediction.
Dr. Granville, of London, who resided for
some time in St. Petersburg!}, in 1849, and at
tended professionally several of the Imperial
court, wrote a letter in July, 1852, to Lord Pal
merston, in which be Bays “ The health of
tbo Ciar is shaken. It has become so gradually
for tho last five years. Ho has been irritable,
passionate, fanotful, morotban usually supersti
tious, capricious, hasty, precipitate and obstinate
withal—all from ill health, unskilfully treated;
and of lato deteriorating into a degree of cere
bral excitement; which, while it takes from him
the power of steady reasoning, impels him to
every extravagance, in the 6amo way as with his
father, in 1800 ; as with Alexander, in Poland,
in 1820; as with Constantine, at Warsaw, in
1830; as with Michael, at St. Poteraburgh, in
1848-9. Liko them his nature feels the fatal
transmission of hereditary insanity, tho natural
oonsequenoe of an overlooked uad progressive
congestion of the brain. Like them he is burr -
ing to hie fate, sudden death, from congestive
disease. The same period of life, between 45
and 00 years of age, sees tbe career of this fa
ted family cut short. Dr. Granvilio says that at
an Interview with Lord Palmerston, February
28, 1854, on matters of a private nature, his
lordship asked him whether he stilt adhered to
hie opinion and prediction. He replied that be
fore July, 1855 (the Emperor would then bo 59
years old) what he anticipated would happen.
*• Let but a few reverses overtake tbe Emperor,”
I added, ’‘and bis death, tike that if all bis bro
there, will bo sudden.” It bas proved so. Alma,

ticipated my prognosis by a few weeks.”
The Hrltleh Enlistment In title Country
[From th*f N. V. Post, 29. h )
Tbo United Slates Marshal of Philadelphia
has uncovered a nest of Ww-brcakers in (hat
city, which, thus far, yields well. Eighteen
persons were arrested yesterday for a violation
of the neutrality laws iu eolisuog there ia the
British service—roost of them Germans. Ninety
wero to have sailed on Sunday, and thirty six
on Wednesday. It is supposed that five hundred
have already sailed from Philadelphia to Halifax

explicit iu condemning this kind of busiacea. It

It will bo seen there is no suen thing as dodg

thus including our alien residents, and tbo words

what disguise may be practised. Thus, if the

Epes Sargents new Play “The Prleaiets ”
Now that the novelty of tho thing is over—
the first presentation of a new play,—the “ au
tbor’s night,” and other things which would
necessarily attract, without any regard to real
merit, have passed by, and the regular business
has commenced, we can judge something of the
prospects of success which may attend the ca

to so great au extent long before its existence.

College! In ilie Union.
Wo recently alluded to the number and oon
stant moltiplicsiion of sectarian colleges iu the
United States. A Cincinnati correspondent of
the New Yprk Daily Ttmes, thus states the num
ber and oharaoter of these institutions :
Colleges. Theo. Sch’ls.
Presbyterian
Congregational
Lutheran
Episcopal
Methodist
Baptist
Roman Catholio
Unitarian
State and Nothingarian
The Congrcgationallsts being but Presbyte
rians, with a different form of Church govern
meot, tboro appoars to be 51 colleges and 25
theological seminaries of that scot, being near
ly half of tho whole number under sectarian in
fluence. This statement shows that all the
Christian sects in the Union pay a groat deal of
atten'ion to theological education, oven to the
Methodists, who, prior to the year 1825, seem to
have no colleges in the country.
The Eag Mill Mauufacture.
[from tho Harrisburg Correspondence of Philo. Ledger.]
An ineffectual effort was made in tho House
on Thursday morning, to prooced to tho consid
eration of the Governor’s veto of tho Pottstown
Bank. The game being played by tho Bank
combination, is to prevent action upon this veto
until a number of votoes accumulate, when tho
wholo batch will have a chance of being log
rolled through by a majority of two-thirds.
This, the friends of the Governor, desironß of
sustaining his position, arc anxious to prevent,
and to Beouro immediate notion upon this veto,
so as to take each one in detail. If the Gover
nor is not sustained, and this bill pass by a two
tbirds vote, he will probably veto all tho bank
bills in his hands, and commit to the Legislature
the responsibility of passing them by a two
thirds vote. It is oven said, and I bclievo truly,
that the Governor will soon veto a large number
of the Bank bills passed, and in his possession.
This log-rolling scheme can hardly suooeed. It
must not bo supposed that all the votes that
passed a bank bill can be counted on against a
veto. Borne members, uniformly voting for
these bills, will back water and sustain the Gov
ernor, when he applies the veto. !
PC Jill of the Calorie Experiment.
[Correspondence of the Boston Journal.]
New Yonx,«March 24 —The Ericsson experi
ment is at an end. The invention is conceded to
be a failure, and poor Ericsson is a ruiped mßn.
He has spent all his fortune in building his
caloric ship and in the experiments he hoe made
on the vessel. He has done more, ho has spent
all his wife’s fortune, which was groat, and she,
! too, is beggared. But the worst of all iB that it
i has led to such recrimination and alienation that
j they have separated, never to be united again,
' perhaps. Had he been successful, his name
’ would have been enrolled with that of Columbus,
Newton, Fulton and other'men of illustrious re
nown. But he has failed ; he has lost his all;
he hae introduced ruin into a onoe loving and
: happy home; and the world coldly looks on, and

attributed to this famous “flair Restorer.'' Hot our In
credulity has been greatly shaken’ within a day or two by
8-elng a couple of certificates of well-known and perfectly
credible rltiteus of the neighboring town of Preston—one
of them tbe Cfip'ain of a New London whaling ship—to the
effect that, in each of these cases, ft two or three months’
u>e of the “ Restore;" had nciually brought oat a new and
vigorous growth of hair upon the head where it was before
bald—the baldness being, in one case, of more than twenty
years standing. W* do not suppose It Is by any means cer
tain that, because tho application has been thus successful
in one or a dozen, it Is therefore certain to
prove equally successful In all. But with such head-strong
evidence as the foregoing, very few bald heads, we suspect,
would willingly forego a fair trial of tho “ Restorer." All
such “old beads" are Informed tbal tbo article can be bod

In Mobsi’s iNnooßiTiNo Elixir on Cordial we hate a
medicine that destroys disease, without weakening the
system; that exhilarates the spirits, without entailing sub

and consequences, that restores the f-hoitvied nerves to full
vigor, that regulates the bowels and the liver, that causes
the constitution itself to recuperate —nnd that in fa-t an*
swers the purpose all stimulant , all nervine preparations,
all cathartics and all nleratives, without producing any of
the unpleasant a fier effects which how from the use of ordi

ages, and, until now, searched in vain. L'.tVit sick rejoice!

IS?* Neuralgia* —This formidable disease, which
seams to baffle the skill of physlolans, yields like magic to
Carter’s Spanish Mixture.
Mr. F. Boyden, formerly of the Astor House, Now York,
and late proprietor of the Exchange Hotel, Richmond, Va.,
is one of the hundreds who hare been cured of severe
Neuralgia by Carter’s Spanish Mixture.
Elnce his cure, he has recommended it to numbers of
others, who were suffering with nearly every form of dis
ease, with the most wonderful success. He says it is the
most extraordinary medicine he has ever seen used, and the
best'blood purifier known.

A TEW days Blnce, I published. aa advertisement of my
iiAHscao Pia>ob, la which an extract from a letter
from Pro£ H- Bohbock, of lids city, addresro I to Messrs.
Bauogarten & Heins, of Hamburg, the manufacturers,
was-inverted., This morning . 1 observed in several of the
daily paper*:» “N&tio signed by Prof. IV, in which he
states that I was unauthorised to make use of ic, and that
it iris incorrectly stated and applied, .
Ia reply—l preanmrd that it ha bad written the letter,
be, of course, meant what was therein contained, and con
sequently required no authority front him to make the
same public. As regard the assertion ns to ita incorrect
ness, I have tbo letter In my poesi-srion, and it speaks for
itself,'word for word os I have published. Messrs. Baum
garten A Ue&ns ar« not dependant upon Mr. Kohbock for
endowment—their Pianos were‘known, appreciated and:
revived the bi»hcßt rommeadatibes from tho frst artists,
long before Prof B. saw fit to-pass an'opinion upon them..
My Tearon for publishing tbeextract was in the fact that
he wru well known in the city, and not .bo ause his recom
mendation was neceteary to establish the merit of : the
Planes. In concluri'm, I may odd that they stand on ifcolr
own merit, and are endorsed by'such men as List, Thai berg,
and others, solely on account of their merit.
