Gentlemen: 1 have looked oyer “Henck’s Field Book for
Railroad Engineers,” and think it well adapted to the ob
ject its author proposes, and have no question but it will be
found a very nceful and practical volume both forofficeand
field work. D. H. Maiian.
Trqt. April-2L 18M.
I am much pleased with Mr. Henca’s tittle manual, the
“Field Hook cf Railroad Engineers.” With the.presenta
tion of Rome of the mott practical and useful of recognized
precedes among railway engineers, ho has given others
which, new at least in their present form, appear to possess -
a mint of higher value than chat of mere novelty—that of
being io geoeial susceptible of available, not to any desira
ble, practical use. In conclusion, while I think the design
of Sir. Henek’s book Is such as to adapt it excellently well
to professional needs, I have pleasure in expressing my
cordial satisfaction with Its execution, all he with th« per
spicuity of arrangement effected by the author, and the ex

spectfully submit to the pubUd decision. -It luur been no
fortunate for thepatlent eftherto that almost pvery purga
tive medicine Is acrimonious and Irritating to . the bowels.
This is not. Many of them produce bo much griping pain
and revulsion in the system as to more than'counterbalance
the good to be derived from them; These jrflZr produce no
irritation or pain, unless it arise froma previously existing
obstruction or derangement in the bowels.' Being purely
vegetablv r no harm can arise tom their usoin iuiy quanti
ty; but It is better that any medlcip'o should bo taken judi
ciously. Minute directions for ;iheir use in the several
diseases to which they are applicable are given oh the box.
Among the complaints which havo been speedily cured by
them, wemaymention Liver Complain Units various forms
of Jaundice, lndigestionTLanguor, and Leas of Appetite.
Listlessness, Irritability, Bilious Headache, Bilious Fever
Fever end Ague, Pain in the Bias and Loins; for, In truth!
all these aro.but the Bonseqnonce of diseased action in the
liver. As ah aperient,'they afford prompt and elire relief
In Costivenesa, Piles, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrofula
and Scurvy, Colds with soreness of the body, Ulcers and im
parity of the, blood; in ehort, any end every ease where a
purgative Is required. "
; They hgvo also produced some singularly successful cures
la Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravel, Eiysipelas, Palpita
tion ol the Heart, Pains in the Back,.Stomach and Bide.
They should be freely taken in the spring of the year, to
purify tho blood and prepare the syswm for the change of
seasons. An occasional doso stimulates the stomach and
bowels intoßealthy action, and. restores the appetite and
vigor They purify the blood, and, by their stimulant ac
tion on the circulatory system, renovate the strength of (he
body, and restore the wasted or diseased energies of the
whole organism. \ Hence an occasional dose fs advanta
geous even though no serious derangement exists'; bat un
necessary dosing should never be carried too far, as every
purgative medicine reduces the strength, when-taken to
excess. The thousand cases In which a physic is required
cannot be enumerated here; but they suggest'themselves
to the reason of every body; and it isconSdently believed
this pill.will answer a better purpose than any thing which
' has hitherto been available to mankind.. When their vir
tues are once known, the public will no longer doubt what
remedy to employ, when in need of a cathartic medicine.
