DAILY MORNING POST* MONDAY MORNING: THE RIVAL BABIES • A bc&utiful child I” Every body said this of Myra Morton's baby. Myra end her bcaband Bald ic in looks if not.in words; ih&t proves nothing, though the first baby is always a marvel and mhr&ole to its par ents. Bat the little one was pretty. Bhe hud bine eyes end plump cheeks, & sweet month and a model noEe, the fairest complexion, and the slenderest fingers. Her hair was abundant, brown and soft, and promised to curl when it got long enough. What pot the crown to her parents* pride, was the ciicnmet&oee of her being the eldest grand' child Lucky darling! The old people were as tickled with it as they had been, with a now top and doll when children. They donned their specs and scanned its features day by day, as though it was the greatest euriositv in tho world. They were delighted to see it wink, evon ; end when by chirruping to it and dimpling its chin, it could bo made to smile, why, then, judging bv t&Q pleasure given, one might have thought that no baby ever smiled before. Myra Morton's baby had seen only three moons, as ku Indian would say, when L izie Bay,; the sister-in-law of Mrs. Morton, bscamea mo- ther likewise. Thanksgiving days were frequent that year; and were not all of them coder con trol of the governor and council. - Now thero was a competition in the baby lifie at once, for if Myra had the first grandchild, ’ iziio bad the first grandson. It seemed quite as wonderful a baby every way, with its two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth; and out weighed bis cousin's original ponderosity by a pound and five ounces. A brave young gentle- maD, so it was. “ A beautiful child!” said everybody, again, sod bis happy parents thought that everybody had hit the marls exactly, ibis time. His grand pareots too, were renewed in their ecstasies; they might be seen trudging over there quito as ofien as tho other babe’s home, Myra thought oftener, and she told her husband so, with a good deal of wonnded feeling. The next thing, tbe Kdy baby was named Jtrußha, v afier its grandmother. 'Twas ail out of policy, L zzie Ray said; and straightway her boy was christened Amiuadab after his grand father. : By degrees, the sister and her brother's wifo grew venomously jealous of one another. Each coveted for her own infant all the praise bestow ed on both. They continued to speak together ‘when they met, aud to call upon each other jast so oftcn.as to save appearances. Myra had lost all her best feelings for Lizzie, and so had Lizzie towards Myra ; nor was cither always wiso enough to keep each feelings (o herself. ‘■lf I lire/* Myra wonld say, “there goes L : z* xio, raoing over to her father's again. I s’pose that wonderful young ono of hers has cut anoth* cr tooth, and she must mako hasto to let it be known " “I hope Myra dreasss her little darter extrava gantly enough,” was the remark from Lizzie. **l saw her buy two dollars worth of corals for it at the store to day. She would be glad to make it look c. 3 well aa other folks* babies.*' A person not aware of the state of things be tween the two young mothers, observed to Mrs. R ay: “ Vour brother's wife his a very sweet little child.” 1 • I confess I could never see any tblog bo nice about it,” was her reply, made rather tartly. “ The child oan’t be called forward, that's cer tain ; ebe’a thirteen months old, and don't go alone eo well as ocr Aminadub did at ten.” “Calves go alouc young,” wag Mrs. Morton’s retort, when her sister-in-law's observation was repeated to her. The aietets-ia law met at a quilting one after noco. Myra had taken her child along, and as usoal every body was saying “beautiful” over it. Lizzie, wheu she could enduro no more, ob sorvtd, with a poor attempt at facetioQanesa : “ I ahould think, Myra, you would take Jeru eha to the Baby Convention.” “If I should,” retorted Myra, in the same tone, “ eho'd stand a better ohsnee to get a prize tbnQ any other child in these parts, I reck on.” L zzle looked provoked at Myra, and so did at L zzie. They scarcely noticed each older dutlug t&a remainder of the afternoon. Toe f.ct was, that Mrs. Morton, secretly in tended to enter the lists of the Buby Ccnvemion which was fast appruuchiug; ebo almost feared, from the reomr* o i her sioter-ic-law, tbit she •»usj?ec*cd oe rotseu. Mrs. R*y, on her part, was piqued—aud that not a little—at the open ttipinuHiion of hvr boy’s inferior ty to bis cons in; bis mother kuew him to bo a remarkable fine child ; and she made a resolve, in her own mind 10 prove ihe mme publicly ht no very dis tant day. Mrs. Morion was very busy embroidering for her b*be a frock—so busy th -t eho could not ley It by far callers —so it became known that the little girl was going to have the richest suit 6he had ever had, and that was paying something Jeruaba’s papa bought her a rich bracelet and lots of finery, of one sort and another. Mrs. Morton was going to visit her iater, ehe said, and she wanted her child to look decent enough so its aunty wonUn’t feel ashamed of It. About this time, It was wonderful to observe bow rapidly precocious Mrs. R-iy’a boy grew, fit was cunning as a fox; could play off antics like any monkey. Somebody evidently was ta king a world of paina with his primary educa tion. There was a special reason for all theee thiugs, os wo shall presently sco. It wanted but two days of the time of the Convention, when Mr. and Mrs. Morton, with their little one, Bet off on the contemplated visit. When quite ready for o start, they rode over to Lisato’s door and bade her good bye. In season of great happiness, little animosities are forgot ten ; and Myra Morton was happy that morning as her esbubersnee of spirits fully testified. Mrs. Eiy said to herself that she was heartily glad they were gone; she bad all along felt obliged to be 60 private and cautious about cer tain preparations she was making; now, at last, she should enjoy a little freedom. She and her husband and ohild were going from home the nest morning; sho wouldn’t for tho world have any ono know where—it was in a direction op posite to that in which the Morton’s had gono. When they should return, having the first prize for the first best baby, ’twould bo time enough for particulars to bo known abroad. Another morning had come; so said tbo dock In the house and the cock in the barn, though the East had not broached the BUbjeot of day light. Mrs. Hay insisted on walking to the rail road station, for fear the sound of a carriage would rouse tho neighborhood; she was anxious to slip away unpercelved. So they quietly ehut np their house, and quietly took their way down street. The train was prompt, and before the wheels had fairly ceased to turn, our passengers stepped abroad. A good many people seemed to have “got np airly,” and were on their way to the Convention or somewhere else; the car Into wbioh L'23'e and her husband went, had no set tee without at least one occupant. For a moment the wife felt unpleasantly at the idea of being obliged to sit apart from her companion; the nest, sho thought it was per haps fortunate; for with him at her side, it would amount to but little that she hod doubled her barege veil over her face as a preventive of being recognised. She glided to a seat beside a woman who, with her head bowed over a goodly sized bundle in her lap, appeared to be enjoying a Qomfortable sleep. Having deposited the precious boy in the mother’s arms, Mr. Bay retired to a seat in another part of the car Tho mornlog advanced; oar traveler neared their place of destination. Mrs. Bay, anxious herself to avoid scrutiny began scrutinizing those around, especially tho person at her side. The latter persisted in sleeping, with her faoe turned away, only rousing partially now and then, and adjusting the bundle in her lap. Bhe was very respectably dressed ; there discoveries concern ing her seemed to come to an end. When the train stopped, and Mrs. Bay joined her husband at the reßr end of the cor, aa they were passing nut, she looked back to tee whether her partner of the settee had awoke; the lady, whoever eho wea, with her bufidle in her firms, was Just leaving by way of the opposite door.
