X*BE9T and Escape of a Burglar.—On * Wednesday night, a than named John Bosley, ' • and two lads named Joseph Wicktino and Jacob MoraD, were arrested by officers Winslow and ' Graham of the night watch, while attempting to enter a store on Liberty street. The culprits . v j?ero conveyed to the tombs and searched—on - the person of Bosley an outsider and a email « 'amount of money was found, which faot alone would suffice to show his profession. * The par* j -r tics .were locked up, but yesterday morning • when they were ordered to bo brought before . " Mayor-Vuls, for examination, the cell in which Bosley had been confined was found empty. It appears there was another prisoner iu the same ecll with . Bosloy, a circumstance the Mayor unfortunately noglcotcd to inform his officers of, and a watchman in removinp him, stupidly left thA door, open, without looking whether there was any other person inside who Ought to be secured. The result may easily bo imagined: . Bosley finding the door open, of course was not slow- to avail himself of the opportunity, and made off to parts unknown. The Case of Mb. W S Thompson. —On . Wednesday, Mr. W. S. Thompson, tho alleged defaulting tax collector of the Sixth Ward, was brought before Jmlgo Hampton, on a writ of habeas corpus, sued out by his counsel, David Bruce,■ An argument was raised ao to whether, under the act of 1779, Thompson could bo detained in custody. Mr. Bruoo argued that : the -writ, on which he bad been arrested by the • Sheriff, only required that he should .go before ..the County Commissioners, and make a state !. • xaentoMufi‘affMrs. Mr. Flanegin, counsel for the prosecution, contended that the writ required him to be kept in custody, as he had refused to make any statement, and the Sheriff had no other place to put him for safe keeping but the county jail. ..The argument occupied about an boor; but iho decision id tho matter was postponed until yesterday, when Judge Hampton decided that the writ, upon which Thompson had been arrest ed was sufficient to s* oure his detention, and that ho should bo kept in jail until the defalcation was settled, or bail given. Theatre.—Mr. Glassford.-n very deserving actor; is announced as up for a benefit to night, and we hope he may succeed in getting a crowd, cd house. • The bill is unexceptionable, offering a display of novelties Bekloth presented in one night. MARCH 16 The week closes with somewhat of an increase In activity and demand oven last week. Supply still abundant; noth ing like a stringency appears yet. Merchants goiog East, to make their Spring purchases, increases the demand for exchange, and will decrease bank balances somewhat. Business In every branch has been rather active this week, and everything looks bright and cheering, since navi gation has been resumed. Prospect for a fine epriog busi ness is indeed flattering. Nothing has occurred to inter rupt the gradual but steady Increase of public confldnure eo absolutely necoss.ary to oor commercial interests. Let everyone exercise a good degreo of caution, and let it l»e one of the ruling principles of financial action. Merchants hero seem to manifest a feeling to curtail credits, and coun. try dealers must make up their minds to submit to this excellent rale, being now adopted nearly everywhere. We are glad to see that New Fork banks have ebeebed, (notwithstanding the increase in specie, Ac ~) the expat slon in loans and discounts, which has been going on for some months past; we anticipated this last week, and still hope they will gradually contract and hold themselves perfectly strong, for any emergency. The comparative figures with last week are; March 3. March 10. Loans $92.3?6,1?5 $02,831.7*0 Dec. $ M.E.'W Specie 16,531,279 16.870 669 Inc. In Philadelphia, trade is much Improved; Money abnn. dant. First class paper, which is not very plenty. Is readily placed at 7@S percent, and second class at 9 to 12 per cent. In Baltimoreand Boston there is no difficulty In placing prime paper at 7to per cent. A moderate demand for Money exists— is abundant, and ij atili seeking sound in* vestments. In Cincinnati, tbo market is growing somewhat easier Exchange Is plenty and dull atper cant premium. The Provision market is quite active, and capital is going there for investment. The Kentucky banks manifest a di.-po eltion to expand their circulation some, which will tend to ears the market in a measure. Money has been tight, with somewhat a greater demand than might have Won expected, considering the limit*-d cbnracter of the trade during the past week; «nd we have noticed more “ shinning” to day than for some tlra*> past. At the Barnu time, the amount of dost reaching the city has been largely augmented within the past few days, and ue hare eTery reason to expect that during ti>o next week the quantity arriving will to quite large. The warm weather which has prevailed during the past six cr seven days, has worked almost os beneficial an effect as a rain, by melting the snow and ice, and setting the flames and ditches run ning With full beads cf water. A week of steady rain now, Enperadded, would set us all right for a long time to come. llespito the stagnation in business which rules at present, and which has prevailed for so many months past—despite the scarcity of money, and the tract of water which in creases it, wo cannot but look upon the genera! condition of the country as flattering to a degree. Our crops for ih coming year are safe beyond peradvonturo— our .it?ck« of goods are moderate—the amount on the way from abroad not excessive. The miners do not want so much ruin either as they ured to require, from the fact ihni ti.rv a-*- In many most important districts supplied by nmfi.ui means. Wo will have plenty of gold taken o>t of the « a'Ui this year; oor mining district is being extended, and the number of miners Increased; and we h*Te every confidence that the trade of the next six or nine rnonlha will bona ue tire and healthy one, and that good rates will rul • for all descriptions of staple goods. When this ts added to 1 1»*- cconotnical habits induced by the •* tight times” we have already passed through, we think there is no re-son u> complain of tho state of the country.
