WEDNESDAY MORNING:
prATif rsoM Ether. —At the Coroner's ex»
aminatioh in tho case of the death of Mrß. Mary
Farley of Linn, caused by ether administered
by Dr ’Davis, a dentist, it was shown that Mrs.
Farley had urged and persuaded the doctor,
against his expressed wishes, to administer ether
to her while be removed a tooth. Dr. Davis
gavo her one and a-half ounoes of ether, whioh
was less than the übusl amount. She exhibited
no unusual symptoms until he attempted to open
her mouth, when he discovered that her jaw wa9
fixed. He immediately turned water upon her,
fanned her, and resorted to every method to
restore her to consciousness; but she died in
about seven or eight minutes. Tho Coroner’s
Jury returned a verdict that “ her death was
oaused by a congestion of the lungs, consequent
upon the inhalation of ether administered by
Addison Davis. In returning their verdict, the
jury ex ressed their sense of approval of the
course adopted by Dr. Davis in using every pre*
cautionary measure.”

I am much pleased wlUnSIr. Houck's little manual, the
“Field Book of Railroad Engineers.” With the presents*
tion of some of the most practical and useful of recognized
processes amoog railway engineers, he has given others
which, new at least in their present form, appear to possess
a mint of higher value than that of mere novelty—that of
being In genoral susceptible of available, not to say desira
ble, practical use. In conclusion, while I think the design
of Mr. Houck's book is ouch as to adapt it excellently well
to professional needs, I have pleasure in expressing my
curdial satisfaction with its execution, alike with the per
spicuity of arrangement effected by the author, and the ex

.r'T-A physicaljnff, but not easy to make
the Mat of oh pill*— one which should have hone of the ob
jections, but all the advantages, of ©very other. This has
been attempted here, nn< i with what success, we would re
spectfully submit to iho public decision. It has been nn
fortunate for the patient hitherto that almost every purga
tive medicine is acrimonious and irritating to the bowels*
This Is not. Many of them prodneo so much griping pain
and revulsion In the system as to more than counterbalance
the good to be derived from them. These ptils produce no
Irritation or pain, unless It arise from a previously existing
obstruction or derangement dn the bowels. Being purely
vegetable, no harm can arise from their use In any quanti
ty ; but it is better that any medicine should be token Judi
ciously. Minute directions for their use in the several
diseases to which they are applicable are given on the box*
Among the complaints which have been speedily cured by
thorn, we may mention Liver Complaint, inita various forma
of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor, and Loss Of Appetite,
Listlessness, Irritability, Bilious Headacho, Bilious S’ever,
Fever and Ague, Pain In the Bide and Loins: for. In truth,
all these are but the consequence of diseased action in the
liver. As an aperient, they afford. prompt and sure relief
in Costivencss, Piles, Colic, Dysentery, Humors, Scrofula
and Scurvy, Colds with soreness of the body, Ulcere and Im
purity of tho blood; in short, any and ©very cose where a
purgative is required.
They have also produced some ringalarlysuccesafnl cures ,
in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy, Gravel, Erysipelas, Palpita
tion of the Heart, Pains In tho Back, Stomach and tilde;
They should be freely taken in the spring of the year, to
purify the blood and prepare the system for the change of
seasons. An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and
bowels into healthy action, and restores the appetite and
vigor They purify the blood, and, by their stimulant no
tion on the circulatory system, renovate the strength of the
body, and restore the wasted or diseased energies of the
whole organism. Henco an-occasional doso is advanta
geous. even though no serloos derangement exists; but un
necessary dosing should never be carried too far, as every
purgative medicine reduces the strength, when taken to
excess. The thousand caeca In which a physio is required
cannot be enumerated here, but they suggest themselves
to the reason of every body; and it Is confidently believed
this pill will answer a better purpose than any thlogwhlch
has hitherto been available to mankind. When their vir
tues are once known, the public wlll no longer doubt what
remedy to employ when in need of a cathartic medicine.
