Attempt to Kidnap Great Excitement.— There was considerable excitement in'fhis place on Friday night, growing out of an attempt by Solomon Snyder and two’ colored men, named James Jackson and David Thompson, to kidnap a colored boy by the name of George Clark. On Friday night, David Thompson met Clark in Bhort street, and aßkcd him to go along and help oarry some things to his house. " Jacksou took him to the honso or Solomon Snyder, and as soon as they on-ered, the door was locked on the inside. Oa seeing Snyder, and knowing hid “ profession” to be that of- a slave catcher and “kidnapper,” Clark became alarmed, and ran up Blairs, with the view of making his escape through a window. Snyder followed him and locked the room door, at the samo time saying, “ Now, Mr, George, I am going to take yon to yonr mastor.” Clark then mado for the win dow, and broke the sash and gtasa attempting to effect an escape, but was seized by Snyder and his wife, who prevented.him from accom plishing bis pnrposo. He cried for assistance, and the noise brought a largo number of per sons .together, foremost among whom was Sir. SVeidner Boyer, who forced both'doors open and went to the reecho of Clark. Snyder and Jackson were at once arrested and takffli beforo Justice Bender, when the above factsisvero eli oitod, and they were committed for a further hearing oh Saturday afternoon. The‘other ac complice (Thompson) has not yet beettlrrosted. At half past.two o’clock on Saturday afternoon, a largo orowd of people, white and colored, as sembled in and around tho. Justice's offices. Bnyder was finally committed for trial, much to tho gratification of the colored population, to Whom he h3S long been a torror. —Hamsburn Herald. ' J A MAToaCincnMVENTBD.—The Siaybr of De troit determined, a few days since, to pot a atop to the driving of fast horses through the prin cipal streets of that city. So, in company with -a posBC of policemen, ho walked deliberately through the middle of Jefferson avenue,-a beau tiful wide street, which is: generally tho course for trotters. Arrived at the end of-his prom enade, tho worthy Mayor was fatigued, and gladly acoepted the invitation of a gentleman to take a seat in his: cutter. No sooner was he seated than the horso broke into a 2.40 pace, and tho conservator of public morals fopnd him aolf flying along at a speed quite dtstrnctive of anything like dignity; and entirely' subversive of municipal: discipline; The proprietor and driver of tho sleigh marie tho . most strenuons efforts to stop his horae, and pulled upon tho lines till hia arms were lame, which everybody know? is tho way to stop one of oar-Ainerioan trotters, bat the animal could not bff’induced to t?rry, and dashed on,- The other fast .ones ia the street, seeing the Mayor set the example, at ooco entered into the contest, and a. mcTry time was the result. -The owner of the horse has since expressed his oxtreme regrot,,that fcla ani mal should have behaved so badly, and threatens to sell him, while the Mayor has not sinoe been * seen promenading the avenue.' The "' Western Railroad Record contains an extended statistical article on the American grape culture, aud from the facts it ha? gathered, expresses tho opinion thatwhilo the vino remains as it now is' in tho region, of Cincinnati, unaffeofed by any great inoroase of insects, parasites, or other, causes of blight, tho grape may hero be cultivated, at a large profit, even when tho wino is reduced to 60 oents per gallon. : But, Snob is the demand for pure Catawba Wine, and such is ’the con sumption of. wino in tho country, that it is safe to say. that, in full .thirty years to - come, wino cannot be redabed to 50 cents a gallon. In all that - time, tho good cultivators''must realize heavy profits. The Record thinks that there must be five .millions of acres planted in vines, before the price caa he reduced to a minimum *n the United States 1 This fact is, to insure cultivators against aby hazard or an overstocked market. There will probably bo 600,000 gallons of Catawba wino raised in tho Ohio Valley, in 1855; but this is nothing to the demand. If it were doubled (whioh cannot be) every year for five years to come, the market Wohld'not bo everstooked. .!■ N E K^“r JUSt rCCCIIOi bJ the following Aotiblograpby of Chas.
