In addition to Whatis contained in that letter,
I will nee this occasion to state that not only is
the colonization of these lands desired to he
made by honest, sober and industrious persons,
bnt the company are especially solicitous that
none bnt thatioiass of persons should emigrate.
The country is almost on unbroken forest of the
most valuable woods, which have great demand
in commerce, and ■ the lands, when olesred, are
capable of producing the most valuable staples.
Industry and Jabob are required, and those who
have not Buoh hablteaTe the last persona who
should emigrate to that eonntry; the oljeot
being solely to establish a colony of honest and
industrious settlers; and- to maintain peace and
good will with all communities, so that what is
now a country as primitive as nature, pnay add
to the general wealth and commerce of the
■world—to benefit those who honestly embark In
the entsrpr.se—to Improve the condition ofthoßß
already there, • and to advanoe olvlliaatlon and
humanity. This is to be done only by Imple.

the representatives of my own country, and ho

The parties bad then and now.but onepbjeot:
not to implicate either Government, directly or
indireotly. They believed it an Objectas desi
rable to the:.one ,ae to the other, and chat it
would serve to simplify, if it did notentireiy dis
pose of,, the .diplomatic questions.which have
tong agitated bothnations in respect to. Central
American affairs. No plan but quiet, peaceable -
and unobtrusive settlement has'ever beih e&n •
ceiyed or countenanced by any onn of’the par
ties "in the grant-. It relation; ffi ’myself,indi
vidually, nothing could induce mo, by word or *
act, to countenance or sanotion any course of
action, under any circumstances, that would vi
olate the lawa of my country or the. public law
of civilized nations; and this is-the fecling and
aemiment not only of myeelf, but of every, di
rector or Bhareboldor in the Company, and all
would shrink from any coarsothat would invade
the principles cf either. The solo object Of the
association,.from, first to last, has been to en
courage a peaceable oooupation and culture of
the wild lands within the grant, to establishlim
iudoatrious and Christian community amid the
almost unbroken woods, where only a few
peaceable Indians roam, and herds of wild swine
and other animals alono disturb the solitude of
■the forest; and if arms were neoesaary, it
would mainly be a means to - support life and
furnish sustenance from the game that abounds
amid tbe perrenial verdure. He that would’ go
there unprovided in that way. might be r jastly
obnoxious to tho epithets which King'David ap
plied to Abner, the son of Nor, in proncuncifig
his funeral oration. 7 If the company hatftHe
indiscretion and- powe’r to acquire possession
and maintain it by arms, there would be no ra
tional man who would not at; once perceive that
the sober and induatrious wonld turn away from
; such an enterprise, nor can Face asythingthere
to attack save the .valuable forest trees and the
roving game of the country.
The Company have no views of’objects that
are in conflict with any law, domestio or publlo;
and, ns the most solid evidence of that fact, I
take the liberty,of incorporating in this letter
two of the’Articles of tho'Company*s association.
They are as follows: - : 1
Art* 10. And whereas it is tho object of the
Company to Bottle thoir lands by. an industrious
and populationas an inducement
thereto, the President and Directora. by them,-
selves, Or their officers or agentß, are ,hereby
authorized and empowered to lay off-the said
lands in sections, half and quartet seodons, inr
ibe manner practised by the United States, and
to convey to each single male settler who shall
move upon and occupy the same, one-quarter
section of the lands of the Company, J free of
cost, and to each family double.that quantity*
But ouly the alternate quarter and half sections
shall be subject to this provision.; The alternate
lots in such towns as the Company may lay out.

provided the occupants shall severally erect

or agents of the Company, as well as all ptr*

guage is capable of is here expressed. The in

sanctity of property, follow the Anglo-Norman

cause too hasty a; letter, I trust that you will seo

encouragement of industry, the elevation of hn
manity, to which.end peace and harmony are
