It is a circumstance well befitting. cdrew
of the wretched man, wboee suicide wo noticed
es occurring on Saturday night'lost, that bis
earlier years are btironded In mystery. Nothing
whatever, is known by the relatives of. his late
wife, of his antecedents prrevious to their mar
riage. Itis supposed that ho.waq.born fat
the State of Rhode Island, ; or, at least resided

wards went to Ohio, at what time is hot known,

there, he committed some crime which made
him an exile from his country, and inddeed him

The first authentic knowledge. possessed by
any here concerning him, dates from the year
1831, when, on March 12, he-was Aaarrled at
Montreal, to Jane Ann Reveil; He WM then at
work at his trade ae cabinet-maker, and his first
acquaintance with the Revolt family was la the
way of business. Antecedent to that'time, as
he said, he had made eonsiderable'monsy in an
iron'fonndry, and .he was then reputed to ba
well off. He gave bis age as twenty-seven,
which wonld make him, nt the time of his
death, to have been fifty-one years old, though
he seemed to-be older by several years. The
marriage was an unhappy one, and (Within a
month, scenoa.of-violence oconrred-between the
wedded pair. In 1833 ho left Montreal at mid
night, to avoid the oonseqnenoe of some transac
tion In which he was implicated' Sa d forger,
-either, direotly or by conatruotion, Iff the settle
ment of money matters with a man by the name
of Peckard, formerly one of his intimate friends.
Previous to this time, the circumstances were
atrong against him that he set fire to fiU hoose, to

at Hamilton. On the first day of May, 1884, he

pass two counterfeit five dollar bills. Remade

horse wagon, having previously converted all his

with hia silver, mostly half dollars, tWo large
chests,‘which were again lined with thin deals
and papered. The chests are still shown here,
with the marks worn by the coins in' the coarse

weeks of travel, and Green immediately bought
uhat was then termed a “float” to a quarter

erected near the lake shore. In the course of a
few years, he resumed his trade of, .cabinet
making. ’ George, the eldest son, war'bora lu

soon after the birth of the latter; Mr. Green ex
changed twentyaores of his land for-q-farm ut
Bloomingdale, Dupaga county. Concerning the
latter property there had been a disputO waged
with the fierceness which characterised such
quarrels in. those times. A BettlernSmed Kent
was in possession on the day the premises were
to.be delivered to Green, but at the result of a
suit at law, he was soon after, ejected, and tbs
legal owner with his family entered Into ooou
pancy of tho house. The border law not based
wholly upon , written statutes, and the decisions
of Courts, and those of a community frequently
clashed withyiolence; : The

whioh he was,sustained by many, and, .with a
party of the neighbors, burst into the honse
on-tho night of the 21st of, March, 1840.
They made their way to the sieo^iiig-liobm of
Ulr. Green, who, ’aroused by the.noise, seized
his rifle and fired in, tho darkDCsaathis as
sailant; the ball passed through the wearing ap
parel of one of them, slightly grazing the skin.
The Sash revealed the positions of the ossa levs
and assailed, and after having attempted to use
his pistol, the weapon miesing fire, he was seiz
ed by Kent and a fierce struggle- ensued.- In the
grapple, Green passed his hand beneath the arm
of his adversary, and buried his knife in his
baok. Kent left the room, and fell dead be ids
the fenoe, upon whioh for years after, were shown
the blood stains.' Tho struggle in the meantime
waged fiercely within; the gang not being awaio
of the fate-of their loader; Green was over
powered, bound and borne oil to a lonely shanty,
where, upon pain of instant death, shonid he re
fuse, he was made to sign a document relinquish*
iDg his claims in.favor of tho elder Kent, whose
absence, Btrange enough, was not immediately
remarked. After a terrible beating fhewonnded
man was released to find his way hotnealone,
and with his wife and children to seek protection
with distant neighbors. ' Had the squatters
known of the death of Kent, there is no:doubt
that the life of Green would have been taken on
the spot. The matter caused considerable stir
at the tiffio, but in the pioneer days Such occur
rences were, from their frequency, less! shocking
than at present. Had no darker stain, than that
of blood drawn In, eelf-defenoe rented upon the
name or memory of the subject of onr sketch,
this act would have been forgotten, or remem
bered only ea a deed of terrible necessity. The
knife with which the blow was struck Wai in bis
possession to the end of his life, and he has nar
rated the tragio scene to many of our citizens.
After Kent’s death, when the exoitment It had
cauaed had somewhat subsided; Green returned
with his family to his house, and rented a part
of the same to a family named. Sutherland.
They, failing by some reason to satisfy him as
tenants, and resisting his attempt fo drive them
away, difficulties -sprung up; Some of the
Sutherlands were taken; suddenly and- danger
ously ill, and poison was was
foremost in .suggesting this as. a, cause, and by
-bis advice the water in the well was analyzed, as
he attributed the occurrence to an attempt at re
venge on the part ot the Kent gang.;: It was
subsequently found that bo had forbidden his
wife to bor-ow flour of the Sutherland*, end on
examination discovered the existence of arsenlc
in their! barrel of that article.' - A few ybars af
