Lieat. General Robertson Arnold died in Lon
don, on December 27th,, He. y?as.second.son of
Benedict Arnold by Margaret hisw 10, daughter
of Chief Justice Bhippen, of Pennsylvania. He
entered the corps or Royal Engineers lit 1898,
and served; more than half a centory.,-Be mar
ried Virginia, daughter of Bartlett Goodrich,
Esq-', of the Isle of Vvight, and for his military
services was created a Knight of Hanover, was
appointed Aid-de-camp toWilliam IV, and was
preßontod-with .a costly sword, .- ...
Tho-above-named officer was the oldest of four
children which Arnold’s eecond wife, Miss Ship-
P en , of Philadelphia, bore' him, viz; James
Robertson, Edward, Georgo and Sophia, His
first wife boro three, threo sons, viz: Benedict,
Richard and Henry. Benedict, the eldest, was
an officer of artillery in the British army—and,
it is believed, was compelled to quit the ser
vioo; he died young in the West Indies- Henry
entered the King’s service after hie father’s de
feotien, and was a .lieutenant of cavalry in the
American legion. He accompanied his-father
to St; John, and was employed in his business. *
He slept in the warehouse near the lower Cove
in that city, arid lodged there the night the.
building was . burned.. He lived afterwards at
Troy, New York, with his, Aunt Haunch, and
was engaged in mercantile pursuits. At a sub
sequent period he removed to Canada, where he
is, now a man of property. ile received half
pay and a grant of lauds from the British gov
ernment. Richard—in 1782 he: was- also a
lieutenant- of cavalry in the American Legion,
commanded by bis father. - In -almost every par
ticnlar hie history is ideutioal with that ofbla
brother Henry. Persons are still living at St.
John who resided there when General Arnold's
s’ore was bttruod. The impression was at the
moment, and still is, that the fire was caused by
design and for the purpose of defranding-a com
pany in Eagland, that had underwritten npon
the merchandisewhioh it contained toanamount
far exaeediDg its worth; These persons differ
os to the fact whether .Arnold himself was in
St. John or absent in England at the time of. the
fire; and hence the degree of. blame which.may
bo attached to the: two'eons may be Uhoertain. •
That both Henry and Richard slept in tbe.slore
on the night of the. conflagration, and that
neither coaid give a satisfoetoiy account of its
cause, seems, however, to be Certain.
James Robertson, whose recent death is men
tioned above, was the only one of the four
children which the traitor’s second wife boro
him, that was born in Amerioa. At the limp .of
the treason, he was a child, and had just reach
ed West Point from Philadelphia, with his moth- •
er. He,entered the British army iu 1798, and
rose to the rank of Colonel of Engineers.'' He
was stationed at Bermuda from 181(1 to 1818,
and from the last named year until 1823, waeat
Halifax, and the commanding officer of engi
neors in. Hava Scotia and New Brunswick.
SVhilp thus in oommand he was at St. Johns,'and
on going into the houße built by hia father, in
King street, which is stil! standing, he wept like
a child. He was a small man ; his eyes' were
of remarkable sharpness, and in features bore a
striking resemblance : to his. father. A gentle
man who has been in servioe with him, and was
intimately acquainted with him, speaks of him
in terms of • high commendation, and relates
that he has often heard him express a strong de-
