DOQDEBHE Depot Pennsylyahia Raileoad.—
Theepaciouß Freight Depot of the Pennsylvania
Railroad, erected on the site of old Fort Du
qucmio, was thrown open for the receipt ef
freight ycßterday.. This building is undoubtedly
one of. the largest and finest of the kind in the
country, and is a credit to the skill of our citi
zens. It extends from Uarbary street, along
liberty, to Water, a distanced 604 feet, andits
Width is 100 feet. The structure is built of brick,
lb the most substantial manner. The walls are
28 feet high; the total heighth to the orown of
the roof is 87 feet; The roof is in the form of
a segment, surmounted with a eky light or “lan
tern,” 21 feet wide and 10 feet high, which
extends nearly the whole length of the building,
ond furnishes the light to the lower part. This
kind.of .roofing is rather a novelty in our oity,
but is without doubt the beet for the purpose, as
tho whole interior Is given for use, no pillars be
ing required, for its support, as would be tho case
withtho ordinary roof. At night, the depot
Will be lighted by nearly three hundred gas
burners.
The tracks enter the building at tho Eastern
'-...find, and ran dear through the centre of the de
pot. They are supported on stone walla, sub
stantially constructed. Tho platforms for the
accommodation of freight nre on both sides of

which was brought on a book account between
the parties, decided against defendant, and by

Geabd Laecest. —A man named John Stotte
was Committed to jail, yesterday. by Alderman
Parkinson, for tho larocny of $6O, in gold nod
silver, from Michael Crist. The money is alleged
to have been stolen from the trunk of the prose

and prosecutor were were employed at tho Brew

dant became aware, on Satorday, that Crist had
the money in hie trank, end on Sunday, nfter it

side of the river. Suspecting from this, that
Btotts was the thief, Crist followed him to the
boarding bouse of Mr. Haas, on Liberty street,

arrested, and being unablo to find the proper so :

The Howard Association announce, in another
column, that they have secured the Sable Or
phe&ns ta.givejb Concert nt the City nail, on
Thursday night, for'the rhlicf of the poor of
this city.- The .object or the entertaioment is
so meritorious, that we feel it is unnecessary to
more than call the attention of pur ciliztns to
it, to insure a crowded house. The Association
have worked nobly this winter, and have been
■well sustained in their efforts by tho charitable,
bat as thero are many willing to contribute who
cannot be rcaohod personally by the agents of
the Bociety, this opportunity we know wiil be
taken by them to pat in their mite. Remember,
the Concert is to provide food for the starving,
clothing for the naked, and shelter and fuel for
tho houseless and freezing.
■ Caeeiess Di-.ivi.no. —On Sunday afternoon, an
old lady was knocked down and run over by a
buggy,-which was carelessly driven along Smith
field street, by some person who seemed to care
more for the speed ho was making than for the
safety of pedestrians. The old lady was cross
. ipg thOßtr-et, and being unable to get out of the
way in'tlme, came under the feet of tho horse.
Mr. Stevenson, of the firm of Young, Stevenson
& Love, Bprang to her assistance, but before he
could get her out of the perilous position, the
wheelß’of the buggy passed over her person.
Fortunately no limbs, were broken. If those
