On Wednesday afternoon, the Individual in question, white name we suppress, walking along the wharf, espied a large lot of Wine, which had just been landed from a steam boat. - Without taking into consideration the lit tle circumstance that the flour probably belonged to some one else, he engaged a drayman to con vey six or eight barrels of it to a grocery store he mentioned, on Penn street, where he would be paid for the drayage. The drayman, supposing all was right, did as desired, but, upon arriving at the store, the gro oar at first refused to receive it, as he knew no thing in relation to the matter, and would not pay for having it hauled there. However, on the suggestion of the drayman, that the flour was worth more than the freight, she grocer at last consented to take it, and settled the dethand. Shortly atter, our speculator called at the store, said the flour was sent there in mistake, paid all claims, and had it conveyed to the N,nth Ward, is the neighborhood of the fair grounds, where be quickly disposed of it. So far the speculation worked well, bat about this time the gentleman to whom the flour had been consigned, discovering his loss, made in quiries 'Shout the missing barrels, traced it to the grocery store, then to the Ninth Ward, and final ly found the man who had abstracted it. Tutor. mation of the circumstance was made before a magistrate, a warrant issued, and the individual arrested, who, finding that his attempt at a speculation was considered nothing less than a larceny in the eyes of the law, agreed to com promise the matter by paying for the flour and settling . the costs. Conaidering that he only got about half price for the flour, when he sold it, and bad a large amount of costa added, the speculation woe pro bably the moat unprofitable one he ever indulged in. A Ham Ez-nntOw.—Several years ago, the father of a large family emigrated from Ger many to this country, and settled near this city. Owing to his poverty, he left behind a part of his children, who were to follow as soon as the parent found means enough for that purpose. One by one the children rejoined the father, ex cept an only daughter; and last spring funds sufficient to defray her expenses across the ocean were forwarded. In due time, a letter was received, announcing the receipt of the money, and that the daughter was then on her way to New York. A short time after, the vessel con• taining the girl arrived at the destined port; but weeks passed, arid the loved one came not. Months intervened, and no tidings came to that sorrowing home. Letters were despatched to all parts of the United States, soliciting a search among the German population of various cities. One of these was addressed to a gentleman of Chicago, who, with a kindness which will never be forgotten by the distressed parents, Insti tuted a search for the lost one. The task was an arduous one, but never failing in his holy work, he persevered in his labors until be found her. Re then provided her with comfortable clothing, purchased railroad tickets for her pas sage home, where she arrivl•d last week, and was received by her aged parents with their hearts overflowing with gratitude and thankful ness to-the kind friend who had brout.t about the joyful re-union. Only parents who have been alparated from children whom they have loved as the dearest idols of their hearts, can Imagine the happiness of that meeting. It appears that the child, on arriving at New York, having forgotten the name of her parents' residence, took passage on a wrong train of oars, and was conveyed to Chicago, instead of this city. Fortunately, she there fell Into the hands of a kind German family, who took the beet care of her, until she was found and restored to her parents again. MITCHEL'S LECTIME.—John Mitchel, the Irish patriot, lectures this evening, at the City Hall, en the prospect of republicanism in Europe, a subject that no doubt will be treated in a mas terly manner by the able pen of the distinguish ed lecturer. We are informed that he lectured inrCincinnati on Tuesday evening to over two thousand persons, on the same subject. As nearly double that number can be accommodated in the new and beautiful City Hall, and as he returns to the city at soma very great inconve nience to himself to satisfy the wishes of many of our citizens, we hope to see him greeted by a fall house. The hoary headed despotisms of Europe will no doubt come in for some hard knocks. COURT or Querns Busions.—Before Hon.
