The proficiency attained by Bohlen, after s
few weeks tuition in penmanship, under the sye
tem made nee of exclusively by Profeaeor Miller,
is really astonishing. Pupils who could barely
write their names, in half a dozen lessons, are
taught a legible and handsome signature. The
dullest scholar cannot fall to learn.
Professor M. has no equal as a penman him
self; and has what so many writing masters
lack, the ability to teguih others. It is too often
the case that professors of penmanship, although
able themeelvee,to execute all kinds of fancy
flourishes, cannot_ import the same talent to
their pupils. With Prof. Millar the case is dif
ferent He promises nothing but what he is
perfectly able to accomplish.
We are pleased to see the constant influx of
students which continues to pour into the Col
lege.,,Slur young men know it is an institution
atop a/Ahoy have long felt the want of, and pa
tronise it as it deserves.

A MARRYING MAN.—A man named David
Bates was convicted, at the last-term of the In.
'diana county Courts, of bigamy, and sentence&
to twenty-two months' imprisonment in the
Western Penitentiary, to which plane be was
brought the other day. It appears he was com
mitted for the same offense in 1851, and had
just 40t our. He returned to the neighborhood
of Biatroviii, cod by dyeing his whiskers' and
changing tie name to David Beatty, was again
married to 3 young widow, by the very same
J:::tice of the Peace who married him before.
One of the witnesses on the trial, stated that
Bates seven wives living, or even more.
Three of them were in Indians county—the
othera, in Westmoreland and Fayette. While in
jail,•Bates sent for the District Attorney and his
,00tinsel, and proposed - that if they would secure
his acquittal, he would give each of them one of
Air wives! "They Jay I have three or four,"
aaid its, " but I know I can find two, and you
shall have them." Bates would make a good
citizen of Utah.
THRAIRII.—FnaT APPRAILLACX OP MISS Ax
men Tues.—This young lady made her first sp.
pearance last night to a very fair audience, in
the °hamster of Julia, in the play of the Hunch
back. Miss Lace has a beautiful figure, delicate
complexion and light hair, a character of head,
probably not the best for the stage, if it were
not relieved by expressive features and a refined
appearance. She was received with that kindly
welcome.which is extended here to all promising
debutantes, especially when they are as handsome
as Miss Ines; and as the play progressed, met
with the most enthusiastic applause. Her man
ner is remarkably graceful, her actions uncon
grained - and judicious, her voice pleasant and
-...natural, and (a great point with many artistes)
she lookedthe character she personated. Her re
presentation of Julia was one of the best pieces
of acting we have witnessed for a long time ; it
surprised and charmed the most hypercritical by
its naturalness and truthfulness, and irresietably
carried away the feelings of the audience.
To-night Miss Ince will appear as Parthenis,
in the play of Ingomar.
MAN KILLED ON TUN RAlLHOAD.—Yesterday,
sa the train on the Pennsylvania Railroad, due
at 12 o'clock, was passing Denny's curve, about
three miles from the city, two men and a dog
were espied on the track, a short distance ahead
of the locomotive. The engineer gave the usual
Opal of alarm, and both stepped off, but one
of them, named John Krouse, imprudently
reaching back to rescue the dog, was struck on
the head brthe beam of the cow-catcher, and
instantly killed. The train was immediately
stopped, and the unfortunate man picked up and
conveyed to the depot on Liberty street, where
.an inquest was held upon him by Coroner
Lowry. Eris skull was fractured in a frightful
manner. The deceased resided in thi Fifth
Ward, and leaves a wife and large ftffily. No
blame is attached to the Engineer or Conductor
of the train, who did all in their power to avert
the accident.
