There were 1102 interments in Cleveland in the year 1854. Of these 1074 wore white, sad 2g colored. Hon. C. R. Buckslew, the absent State Sena tor, is a passenger by the Asia, which arrived at New York yesterday. The U. S. Mint, in Philadelphia, coined during December, $2,158,298 in gold, and $440,180 in silver, and received on deposits $4,857,000 in gold, and $250,000in silver, A number of the principle citizens of Phila delphia have requested Mayor Conrad to call a town meeting to take measures for the relief of vibe poor. He has acceded to their request. Mr. Littlejohn, (Whig,) of Oswego, was. on Tuesday elected Speaker of the New York As sembly. He is a merchant of Oswego, and a man _ considerable ability. The eloop-of-war Albany is given up for lost by the Navy Department, as it Is thought she has foundered. Her fate reminds. one of the Hortet," which suffered similarly many years Ka- In--Massillon, Ohio, on bust Einnday evening, Rudolph Lehman stabbed John McGraw in the abdomen, which wound produced death on Mon day morning. Lehman is a single man, as was also McGraw. He has not yet been arrested. The Legislature will have plenty of work to, do this winter if one half is accomplished that Is promised. And it is evident that the new party have the power to do what they please. To abolish .the Canal Board is resolved on, we hate no doubt. Mr. Mott must be punished for getting so enormous a majority; and to abolish the Board sends him back to the home from , 1 which the people called him. It makes rocm too for many sew offices, such as superiat2L dents or managers of the public works. To 'abolish the' old board and create a new cue is the only way to secure to the new party those fat offices. So we "appoint that will be done. Another thing promised is an sot to secular ize and tax all church property. Protestants as well as Catholics will feel the effect of such an act. Protestant church property in this State is twenty times more valuable than Cath olic, and will yield a very large revenue. The churches must be taxed if the H. Ne. do wLat they promise. In the next place the State Leg islature:has quite as much to do with the natu ralization laws iv Congress ; and we may expect some legislation on that subject. So far as wo can learn, the views of the leaders of 'the new party are that all foreigner" now in the country may become citizens under existing laws, tho 90 laws being so amended as to prevent frauds ; but all foreigners coming into the country after the passage Lf the law shall never become citi zens unless by special note of Congress. The disbanding of all military companiei composed of foreigners is talked of; and may be attempted. It has heretofore been customary to publish the laws and legislative documents in the Gee. man as well as the English language. We shall watch with interest the fate of a motion of that kind this winter. The Germane will not like to be thrown overboard in that way. But we can • not help them. The Natives have the power to do what they Will ; and they will not be idle thin winter. After these special matters are attended to,lwe hope our law makers wilt devote their energies to some other things. A repeal of the usury , s would do much good in these bard timer. With the present demand for money and its scarcity, six per cent. is not a satisfactory com pensation for its use, and for the risks of lend ing. The law as it is is useless, because never enforced; and for all practical purposes migt. jtist as well be repealed at once. Attempts zu regulate prices by law are always useless. Th- state of the market and the relations of demati and supply will always regulate prices, not ord;- of merchandise but of money. Liamlot...C. W. Coltldook. Esq It is a good thing to see Hamlet played. Even the inartistic mumbling of the. veriest tyro of the Drama is not altogether unpalatable, so long as he "speaks no More than is eet down to him ;" for, clothed in whatever dress of elocu tion, good or bad, it can never lose its high po etic brilliancy—its deep peyshological meaning —its grand dramatic power. Set a diamond in brass, and the gem sparkles with all its native fire, and ie none the less valuable. But, to see Hamlet reel/ played is a still better thing. The diamond set in pare kol4 finely wrought is " mutt glorious in our eyes." We are disposed to place Mr. Couldock with Macready, Forrest and Mur dock, at the top of the pinnacle—to inscribe his name by the side of theirs in the loftiest niche. He surrounds Hamlet with the pure gold of in• tellect, taste. art and judgment. His rendition of the great soliloquy on suicide—" to be or not to be,"--is capital. His walk, gesturee, intona tions—in fact his entire action is strictly in ac cordance with those rules of high art which have never been written down, but which are never theless " known by heart "-by every appreciative I mind. "Hamlet," says Coleridge, "has been , the darling of every country in which the litera ture of England has been fostered." We con sider it no exaggeration to say that Hamlet can be a " darling " to the patrons of the Drama only when represented by such actors as Cool dock. We cannot omit bestowing high enconiums also upon his Rs:Lelieu. lits Luke Feeleisug is proverbially great; and so of his other charac ters. We trust the public will not forget to be stow an appropriate patronage upon Mr. C. dur ing his present engagement at the Theatre. Let it be said to the credit of our city, that '•brains" shall hot go unrewarded. atir We give place to the subjoined letter from a highly respectable citizen of Cambria county, in relation to the benefit his lady derived from the skillful treatment of Dr. C. M. Fitch, as it may be of interest to many of our readers friends, or who are themselves suffering of di eesae of the lunge. Dr. Fitch positively leaves our city for St. Louis on the 15th inst., so that all who wish to consult him, and avail themselves of hie skill in the disease above referred to, must do so before that time. His success in this oily has been remarkable: numerous letters like the one below, we doubt not, could be procured by writing to those who have been his patients, and we aro authorized to say that Mr. McFarland will give any one further information conoerning Mrs. McF.'s case upon writing to him. As will be observed by a card in another column, a de duction in fees is made to persons visiting from a distance, in consideration of the expense at tendant upon traveling: P. ~s 5 CREWE VILLAGI, Jan. 3, 1855. To TUN EDITORS or TEM PLITSBOTIPH POST: Dear Sir:—As I understood that Dr. Calvin M. Fitch is to remain but a week longer in Pitts burgh, I have thought it might he a favor to the suffering, to state the effects of his treatment in the case of my wife, who, seven weeks since, caosulted Dr. Fitch for au affection of the lunge, from which rho bad been suffering for four years. She was much emaciated, coughed se verely, and raised large quantities of dense, heavy matter, which would instantly sink in water. Under Dr. Fitch's treatment she hue Improved beyond expectation; the cough has abated, her expectoration greatly diminished, and she has gained no less" than twenty five pounds In flesh. Her improvement has been so rapid that I have thought it worthy of record, especially as our physician had pronounced the ease nearly hopeless, and endeavored to per• suede me from applying to Dr. Fitch. If you see fit to give this an insertion in the columns of your paper, you will, I think, do a great service to all who are ect unfortunate as to be laboring under disease of the lungs, and greatly oblige Your ob't servant, Axoaxw BPFAILAND. [From the Philadelphia Ledger of Wednesday.] A Bank In Trouble. A suggestion was Sled yesterday in the Su preme Court, by St. George T. Campbell and M. Russell Thayer, on behalf of the Attorney General, setting forth that the Commercial Bank of Pennsylvania, in this city, had violated the fundamental articles of its act of incorpora tion, in discounting notes at usurious and un lawful rates of interest, and in dealing in pro missory notes, contrary to the express prohibi tion contained in said act of incorporation, and suggesting that by reason of such alleged un lawful practices and abuses of their corporate powers, the Bank had forfeited its charter. The Court ordered a writ of Tao warranto to issue against the Bank, returnable January 20th, 1856. At the same time a bill in ' , gully was filed by Messrs. Campbell and Thayer, on behalf of Wm. L. Manderson, praying for a special injunction to restrain the Commercial Bank from continuing to discount paper at usu rious and unlawful rates of interest, and from discounting any paper except such as might come before the Board of Direotors in a regular and lawful manner. The Court ordered the motion for the injunction to be heard on Satur day next. mar Our Harrisburg correspondent has Mat ua his first letter, and it is worth a perusal by all. It is $ good one. We hope for more of the urns sort from the risme source. • ,4 ' , 1 , =l , " [Correspondence of the Daily Morning Poet.] MILL Or Hones OF ItiPBASSINTATIVIII. January 2, 1865. Deer Post :—Here we are, amongst the as sempled Salons of this great Commonwealth. They have all arrived, registered, bored and been bored ; have met in their official capacity, elect ed • Speaker, and, whilst I write, are enrolling their names preparatory and prefatory to doing "the State some service," in the way of legisla tion.. They are certainly 'saline a looking, dig nified and intelligent a body of law-makers as the old Keystone has had here in a long time. "I speak the things that I myself do know," for I have seen a good many legislatures in my rea sonably protracted period of earthly pilgrimage! Ahem! I feel better after getting over that pe riod. The candidates for Speaker were Henry K. Strong, of Philadelphia city, Whig, "K. N.," &c., and Richardson L. Wright, of Philadelphia county, that "used to was," now also of the city. The vote stood, Strong, 76; Wright, 18; M'Combs, 1; Fraley, of Schuylkill, 2. "Sam" had evidently been about; at least the vote so indicated. A majority of Democrats and all the Whigs voted for Mr. Strong, among whom I might mention your Representative, John M. Kirkpatrick, Esq., who seems to be determined to have a mind of his own, and do what he be lieves right. Mr. Strong is an old member, a man of years, a gentleman of dignity and ur banity of manner, and will, I doubt not, make an excellent °Meer. I gay this much, although differing, as you know, widely from him in his political views. He was conducted to the chair by Messrs. Smith, of Philadelphia, and Wright, his opponent. After • brief, neat speech, the oath of office was administered to him by Mr. Wright, and so came "the conolueion of the whole matter I" The Senate is in great 'tribulation. The death of Mr. Foulkrod and absence of Mr. Buokalew renders the eleotion of a Speaker and other officers, a matter of no easy accomplishment. This afternoon they had five balloting, but with no results, so far as an election was concerned. Mr. Darsie and Mr. Frazer, of Fayette, hold the reins. The last election rather "riled " Mr. D. at the Whigs—and I do not wonder l—and now, in these last days of his political existence, as it would seem, he seems disposed to pay them well for what they did, as also what they did— not! Dental Smyser, fat, rubicund and rosy, who would like to have been Supreme Judge, but could not, merely and only because he had not votes enough, is also here. He is a very clever man, and makes a very good " Know Nothing!" country judge, hut compared with , that master jurist, Judge Black, is no where at all. I take it he is up here pulling the wires of 1 the underground operations. Great men, even, as you know by experitmee, will sometimes do things they ought not. Rev. John Chambers, Rev. Anger Boon, and Dr. T. A. Van Dyke, all of Philadelphia. are here, and have been closeted with vie Exnellen cy, the Governor, in behalf of the unfortunate and to be pitied Dr. Beale. I say " unfortunate and to be pitied," whether guilty or innocent. it does appear to me that be was convicted upon the very eliglitest testimony, and that, were I Governor of the Commonwealth, I should see , tainly pardon him. The opinion of scientific men, and those of disinterested lookers-on, du , ring the trial, almost compel me to that belief. The finding of the jury, by its very singularity —guilty, with recommendation of mercy—indi cates there was doubt even with them. If guilty, he deserved the meet condign punishment ; and if not. he deserved an entire and hearty acquit tal. The verdict in itself considered is a menu ' ment of stupidity, which no act of mine might I ever rear. But of this enough. The Senate meets to-morrow morning, when land where, If I mistake not, there will be " • good time generally." There are about twenty applicants for every office in the gift of both Houses. How candy enough can be had to fill all their nouths is more than I can divine. Captain Short, of Manchester—one of the pio• seers of N &deism —is here, paddling his own CUM for Sergeant-at-Arms ; as is ale° Dr. John E. Parks, of the same neat thriving little I borough "with a future before it,"—as " Hor ace," of "v bite coat" and woolly bead" no toriety has it. I humbly trust they may bete be successful One borer for the same office told me to day that his reason fur wishing it, over doorkeeper, &c-, was, that having been " a millitary man" (he still rejoices iu the aosawirpitt of " Msjor,") in his "young days," "it soinukti better," and was "mon in" his "hag:" I en tirely appreciated his love for the venerable and antique, but fear his love for the pay was pars mount. So we go. The old year left us gently and peseefelly, with scarce • perception of It's having gone. "It went out with the tide " The new was an nounced with salvos of artillery and bands of music. Young gluts, with landscape pantaloons, white kids, large neck ties, patent leathers, and steeple crowns, were the Prominent feature of yesterday, is they wended their way hither and thither, calling upon the fair, (and they are not a few I assure you!) of this goodly city. 1 trust you keep this time honored custom alive in your great smoke house: I like it much. It tight ens the links in the chain of friendships, and eneourages those social amenities and courtesies which contribute so largely to the making up of a pleasant life. Moreover, to me, it is as items with our friend, the military Major, a reliving of " my young days," is parting radiance of a long vanished eummer—rich and laden with • lasc.ous fruitage of hopes and tenderness, which never, as you know, ripened Into reality. 'Even now, in these days of " the sere and yel low led" of my bachelorhood, semembranees of these and similar customs, comes over me with with a most kindly freshness, and carry me back, in eight of myself, to hours and moments that were in very deed golden! A. _ _ Dr. liondorsora, of Blow York 'We cheerfully copy from the Courier and En quirer, the following complimentary paragraph, because we know it is well merited. Dr. 11. as an oculist, possesses a reputation earned by long experience and extensive practice. He haa ef fected, to our knowledge, many cures that have baffled the skill of others. We therefore recom mend him to the afflicted. DiseAs■ or TUN EVlL—This is a complaint which is very prevalent in New York at this sea son of the year, and one extremely difficult for physicians to treat with success. A gentleman attached to this office was severely afflicted with Inflamed eyes a short time since, and two emi nent physicians, after the usual treatment of cupping, leechttig, blistering, &0., failed to af ford relief, when thq patient heard of several remarkable cures made by Dr. Henderson, ocu list, No. 468 Broadway, and procured his ser vices. Dr. H. with a site treatment entirely his own, restored the affected eyes to snob an extent in one week, that the patient was enabled to re sume hie duties. This, however, is but one arise out of scores. where Dr. H. had restored eyes which had not been operated upon with success according to the old system. He has treated with happy results nearly a hundred patients from the public institutions during the last year, and this, too, without resorting to cups, leeches, blisters, soarifyingoalomel, or any of the harsh means so often in use. Dr. H.'e advertisement will be found in ano ther column. A " Ilnava " Famitsu NonLamart. Lord Forth has returned to England from the Crimea. It is said his return has created great indigna tion. The London correspondent of the New York Tribune writes: -He is a very young officer, a minor, and, as it seems, not much of a hero. In the battle of Alma he threw himself on the ground, and screamed—" I am frightened, I cant't fight." Lord Raglan sent him word that in the next bat tle he wee expected to distinguish himself by his gallantry, that his cokardice might be forgotten. But at Inkermann he again behaved as coward ly; two officers, therefore, were sent by the General-in-chief to cast away his epaulettes, to break his sword, sod kick him out of the camp. He returned to England a disgraced man, his family disown him, and the aloha are closed. against him. air Liebig, the German chemist, having made many experiments, recommends the making of wheat and rye bread, by using a pint of lime water to five pounds of flour. He urges the abandoning the use of Baleratus in the rais ing of bread, and to shbstitute therefor pure baker's yeast and lime water. '• Cream of tartar and carbonate of soda are far inferior to common yeast for making healthy bread," says the Scientific dsiericoa. The lime water is prepared by stirring some quick lime in cold water, then after allowing the sediment to set tle, draw it off, -sad put It in bottles for use. On the 6th, a eortie against the French was repulsed with much loos. , On the 9th, the Moniteur' says, the batteries of the besiegers were re-established, and the al lies eufficiently entrenched and provisioned to remain through thewinter. A Russian despatch, dated the 18th, states that nothing of importanoe had occurred. Some email sorties were successful; in one, the Rue• slang had captured some small mortars, and spiked others which were larger. The fire of the allies was but feeble. The Russian defences on the South are estimated at 100 guns stronger than when the siege began. On the other hand, the British have erected a very powerful bat tery, which has not yet been opened, on an emi nence north of the valley of inkermann, com manding every house in Sebastopol, besides being another step towards the investiture of the place. It was observed that the Russians were arming their ships in Sebastopol, probably for an at— tempt to a surprise by sea. Sir James Graham has stated that Admiral Fanshawe is making vigorous efforts for the de struction of the slave trade in Cabs. The foreign enlistment bill was read a third time In the House of Commons on Friday night. and passed by a majority of 88. The measure is strongly repugnant to the feelings of the people. It is regarded as a job to put money In the pock , ens of our cousins Hanover and Gotha.
