Hobn & Sargent, Banker on the cor ner of Wood and Sixth streets, and W. A. Hill & co. , on Wood street, closed their establish ments, yesterday, and suspended payment. • Messrs. Hill & Co. were the Treasurers of the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad Company, but the Secretary, Captain Naylor, says their suspension will not interfere with the payment of the interest coupons on the bbnds given by the City of Pittsburgh and the county of Alle gheny to the company—the money for this pur pose, and a large balance besides, at this moment being in the hands of Duncan, Sherman & Co., New York, who pay the coupons. Nor will the failure occasion any loss ob-embarrassment to the company. ELECTION IN THE E/ITII WEED.-4The following is the result of the election in the Fifth Ward on Tuesday: Alderman--John A. Couldock, one of the best actors traveling, opened an engagement last night, at the Theatre, with the character of Hamlet. Mr. Couldock'e conception of the part differs considerably from that nodally , given to the chlri.: , er by most traveling "stars." The alteration, we must confess, however, ie greatly for the better, and the vigor and acute percep tion or the spirit of the author, as displayed in his whole personation of the " melancholy Prince," received; as it merited, the most liberal applause from the audience. To night, Mr. Couldock will appear as Richelieu, in Bulwer's celebrated play of that name. 11111 Foy Busse Itent at the Theatre, on Tuesday night, came off with great success. The - establishment was decorated in the most beautiful manner with flags and banners, and the whole interior presented an exceedingly happy appearance. About one hundred couple were present, dressed in all imaginable etyles of costume, and the dancing was kept up to an early hour in the morning. Every one seemed to be extremely well pleased with the what affair. ATTIMPT TO STAI3.—A man named Joseph Robineon was brought before Mayor Vole, yee terday, on a charge of attempting to stab B. Travis, u steward at the 80. Clair Motel. The porters got into a difficulty, the previous night, at a negro ball on Fourth street, when defendant struck at Travis with a knife, which the latter caught in his hand. Robinson was fined for disorderly conduct, and discharged. UNFROTOILID Arrwer..—The Chronicle states that a man named Joseph McMullen, residing in the First Ward, Allegheny, was attacked on Monday night last, on the other side of the riv er, by several villains, one of whom cut tbroogb his overcoat with a bowie knife. He made his escape, after being severely handled. The at tack was made without any provocation whatever being given by McMullen. GOOD NEws.—lt is stated, upon good authori ty, that the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad Company have been fortunate enough to obtain an advance of 44500,000, which will enable them to renew operations, and hasten the road to its completion. This news, if true, will be hailed with the most unfeigned satisfaction by our whole community.
