THAI WNW PASTY-
At • late banquet at Boston, on the evening
of the 28th of November, in honor of the sweep
ing IL N. victory in Massachusetts, some devel
°pomade were wide by the 'peahen, witiohin
ileac' the principles sad course of the new par
ty hereafter.
Marshall P. Wilder, the President of the meet
ing, made a speech In which he proclaims wel
come to foreigners who come to our shores ; but
wants them Americanised before , they are nate
rand. This means, we presume, that the term
.of neidectee should be extended before the im
migrant is made a citizen. The speaker says,
too, that the party proclaims religions toter',
and allow every man to Worship God ac
cording to the dictates of his ors conscience."
What more or lees do the Democrats do or
say l Democrats . 1 extend the blessings of free
dom to the virtuous and oppressMi of all nations,
who have to seek an asylum from tyranny and
oppression." This is good Democratic doctrine,
mad has always been so. If Ave years is not suf- .
floleat to Americanise immigrant", let the term
be extended. But a law or polio' that would or
ganize an inferior caste, founded on the mere ao
oidedi of birth, is not Democratic or American.
In this respect the new party seems to differ very
little, if at all, from the Democrats, if Mr. Wil
der is to be considered a tree exponent of its
Mr. Wilder intimates, too, that the seal of
secrecy may soon be removed, and the new par
ty sot openly hereafter. He says: " If secrecy
was theveceetary condition of al belisag, it may
not be Ae istitetabls law of future action." This
onnonnoemeilt was received vithapplause by the
.audience..So we may expect that soon it wHI
become an open patty, announcing its platform,
and openly battling for political asaindeney.
But the uthientailtid features. of the evening't
proceedings were the reference to the slavery
question, and to their candidate for the Presi—
dency In 1856. On one of the banners displayed
in the ball was arepresenWieri of *. Whit*
House," and under It the inscription, 4 . State
reableaai is '56." Gen. Sam Houston, of Texas,
is referred to; end thus from the Old Bay State the
hero of San Jacinto is called out as a candidate
for the next Presidential nee.
On the subject of slavery, one speaker at the
banquet said, " Oar motto is not to turn out of
way to meet slavery, nor to attack It." But he
intimates that slavery must not attempt aggres
sive movement,. This Is pretty liberal for the
old hot-bed of Abolitionism. Another • speaker
said, "He would not interfere Iwith. slavery in
the States, but asked our brethren of the South
not to seek to extend it over new territory, and
would urge our entire separation of that institu
tion from the affairs of the_general government."
This sentiment was received with "prolonged pi
applause," and it cannot fail to strike every
mind that the very aim of the Democracy for
years has been to separate slavery from the at-!.:
fairs of the general government. The Democrats;
would treat it entirely as a local institution, to r
be regulated by the States where it exists; and"
decided
decided by the votes of the people in the new
territories. That is the Democratic doctrine,
and if the new party design to frame their plat-1
form
form out of Democratic principles, we surely
have no objections. If they Choose to ran •(:
Democrat for the Presidency in '66, all right.; •
•
Gen. Houston can never be any thing but
Democrat, sound, able, fearless and honest ; one"
wad° not believe he will ever repudiate the glori- 1
oue name of Democrat. The word " Democra
cy," has a charm about it that tells every where.
It is a word whose signification is as wide as the
realms inhabited by our race, and is equally at
tractive and applicable wherever man is found
having a right or a desire for self-government.
Democracy means the rule of the people : and
no Democrat can find any good reason for leaving
the. ranks; of his party, while it abides by its
principles. Whoever will help carry out those
principles are our friends, to whatever organise- I.
don they may belong. We contend for principles, ,*
and not for men, or for spoils. •
The Free Soil party must see in the principles
of the new party, as announced at the Boston
banquet, the end of all hope of swots for that
northern sectional party that' would snake the
perpetual agitation of the subject of slavery its
chief occupation ; and hostility to the South its
bond of union. Mr. Greeley and Mr. 13ward
will hare to solve again the problem of the value
of the Union to the people of the north. Taking
the public sentiment of the North as the baiie of
their oalculatione, they will find a different re
sult next time. Just one year ago they thought
they had shown conolusively that the Union of
the States was worth just forty eente apiece to
the people of the northern States. From present
indications it is evident that our people are not
diepcsed to sell out their inestimable birthright
at so cheap a rate.

It does not pretend to say that these figures
are strictly accurate, but they have been cau
tiously made, and cannot be more than a million
or two out of the way, the excess in the country
being quite as likely to be over as under the
amount above stated. - 1t is thus proved that
there is now in the United States about one hun

more than there was in the year 1846.

Harms ns Mturoo.—lt is stated that the Rus
sian at the Alma numbered over 50,000 men,
with a powerful train of artillery, and that the
force of the allies was about the same; after the
engagement, which is classed as desperate, the
Csar's troops were driven at all itoints by , the
bayonet, the Motors losing alxiut 2600 men.
Now, it this statement be true, the Russians
made but a feeble resistance; the small lou of
the allies proves this. The Mexicans would have
held oat more stubbornly. In proof, it may be
stated that at Churubneoo they inflicted a lass of
one thousand upon the eight thousand Americans
engaged, and at the Molino del Rey, where
Worth had but a little over three thousand troops
in all, he lost nearly nine hundred men in lea
than an hour. At the same rate, the allies under
St. Arnaud and Raglan, in their battle upon the
Alma, should have lost something like fifteen
thousand men, provided they had fifty thousand
men engaged.

The imports.of free goods, mostly tea and cof

and especially during the month just closed,
when the receipts were lees than half as large
as for the correspondiog month of last year.
Thus the total entries of dry goods for November
were 52,583,105 lees than for November, 1858,
and $881,197 lees than for November, 1862.
The receipts of cash duties for the mei:Ancor
respond with the comparative imports, showing
a decline from the same month of last year of
nearly one million of duties. The estimates for
the next year must have a far lower sum than is
here represented. We have compiled a com
parative statement for the month, and a quar

We are now nearly at the close of the year.
We look fora oomparative decline in the receipts
of foreign goods during the month of December,
but so many orders have been countermanded
eines the opening of the last Fall's trade, that it
is difficult to make an estimate with any confi
dence. We may be certain, however, that the
imports of foreign goods during the year 1865
will show a very material decrease in comparison
with the year soon to expire. We shall thus have
far less demands upon our product of gold, and
if our cotton crop goes forward at fair average
rates ; may even look for an almost total cessa
tion of specie shipments. This, for a while,
might be omeidered desirable, but we are much
more afraid of disinter from home speculations
than from the purchase of too many foreign
goods.

Ellimps/ar Fight.
The latest breach of the peace, occurred in
Plymouth township, in this county, last Toes
day. Miss Harriet Brown, daughter of James
Brown, Seq., had went in the evening before to
visit a neighbor, Mr. Wm. Castor, and the matt
morning as she was retiring home alone, a pet
deer, three years old, belonging to Mr. Castor,
leaped over the high fence enclosing his terri
tory, and-pursued her. He overtook her about
midway between Mr. Castor's and her father's
house, and at once attacked her—be struck her
on the side with sufficient force to cut with his
horn through all of her outer and under clothing
and drew blood. As Miss B. fell, she courage
ously took the deer by the horns and clung to
him, sometimes being dragged on the ground,
and at others regaining her feet—the animal all '
the time striking and cutting her with his feet.
The deer finding himself foiled by the courage
of the brave girl, attempted another mode of at
tack, and endeavored to push her up against
trees and thus shake her from, bee bold on his
horns. But it was no go—she held on; but in
the °puree of the struggle the deer dragged Miss
B. near to a fetniehrei point where there was a
large stack of straw placed against It on the
other able; the poor girl being unable to make
herself heard IA tuitAiries for kiVoisa

blood, met about herlor some source of escape.
nod looked upon the straw stack pe the only
waft retreat—and manceuvring so as to got the
deer user up to the fence, let go of his horns
with her right hand and tried the gouge game'
—putting her thumb into his eye, gave it a hard
push; this .so hurt and frightened the beast that
as quick as lightning be bounded back some fif
teen feet from ber. and before he had recovered
from his fright sufficiently to renew the attack,
hie fair ontagonist had gained the top of the
fence and from tbence to the top of the stook—
completely foiling her adversary. From her
high position she succeeded in Ling the at
tention of a neighbor, who ato her relief.
The fight lasted near an hour, and at its close
Miss Brown's clothes were nearly all torn oft
her, and she was cut in almost every part of her
body by the hoofs of the animal.
