readers will recollect that about a week ago, a
large frame building attached to the steel works
of & Blair, to the Fifth Ward, was Pile
strayed by fire. On Ftiday night, an atteMpt
wa made to set fire to another portion of the
same establishment. The watchman discovered
the fire in time to have it extinguished before
any damage was dune. The fire was started at
the head of the cellar stair case. On examining
the spot afterwards, it was discovered that tal
low had been smeared all over the steps, end
portions 6f partly consumed matches, with
which undoubtedly the fire had been kindled.
were found near. The watchman - of the works,
Robert Allison, from ciroummances which came
under his notice, suspected an Irishman named
Richard Giles, who had formerly been employed
in the establishment, of being the incendiary,
and on Saturday morning made information, be
fore Alderman Parkinson, against the man. He
_vas arrested, and had lone examination before
the magistrate.
The evidence elicited was entirely of a cir
cumetantial character, but bore very hard on
the defendant. It was proven that although
living at considerable distance from the steel
works, be was one of the first persons to make
his appearance when the alarm of fire was
given; that be bed made, threats of setting fire
to the place, and that, when speaking of the
late fire, - he bad said the whole Concern would
be burned down in a abort time. It was shown
that matches, corresponding la make andr ap
peasant', to those pioked.,l4l6o4Nor
tire, had been toned in
rested. The incendiary, to accomplish his hers
:ions object, had climbed in through a window
on the first floor, and in doing so, deposited on
the window sill a quantity of white clay of a pe
culiar kind. The prisoner's clothes, when ta
ken into custody, exhibited the marks of thts
clay in several places. He was also very much
confused the night of the fire, when he appear.
ed on the ground, and gave contradictory so
eonnUi of himself.
In addition to the above, there was also other
evidence of a circumstantial charaoter, brought
against the prisoner , which the magistrate con
sidering sufficient to commit him on, be was
oordingly sent to jail to await trial at the next
term of court.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT. —An Irishman named
Terence M'Laugblin, who was, we believe,
employed on the Pittsburgh and Steubenville
Railroad, was seriously irjored, on Friday
night, by the kick of a horse. In company
with a couple of boys" of the same species as
himself. be came up to the city to have a "bit of
a spree " As a natural consequenee, the three
were u•,t long in tho city, before they exhibited
strong proof that they were not Soo of. Tem
perance. and were ready for any kind of devil
ment. Late in theiovening, being on Penney'
vania avenue, they observed a farmer named
M'Donald proceeding along the street, on horse
back, on his way home, and thinking this a good
opportunity fur sport, two of the party sprang
cut and grasped the bridle, while t e other,
M'Llnghlin, seised the tail of the animal. The
horse, frightened at the soddenness of the at
tack, raised his hind foot, and struck out vicious
ly behind, hitting M'Laughlin on the 1,.g. near
the knee, with pooh force as to break the limb.
The others, when they discovered the injury
their comrade had received, looaed their hold,
and the farmer galloped off M'Lsoghlin writhed
in agony on the gruund for 801121) time, but was
finally picked up by the other two, who were
completely sobered by the occurrence, and con
veyed to the reeidetice of a friend on Webster
street, where Ms fractured leg was„set_ He is
now in a fair way of recovering. We presume,
when he ge's well, he will hardly attempt such
a prsotical j •ke again.
PATMUNT or VOLUNTEIR3 TOO Sessions AT
JZWELLS EXECCTION —it is perhaps not gene
rally known that those volunteers who turned
out by order of the Sheriff to attend the execn•
!ion of David Jewell. have not yet been paid for
their services, the County Commissioners, from
eptrit of fader economy, having refused to red,
munerare them for their time and trouble on
that occasion. On Saturday, Mr Edmund
Snowden appeared before Judge M'Clure, in the
Court of Quarter Seteions, and on behalf of the
Jackson Wiles, one of the c o mpanies on service,
stated the above facts, and requested the Court
to take some action in the matter. He also
mentioned that two Grand Juries had also sue
cessirety recommended payment of the amount
due each company His Honor soewered, that
the Court had no jurisdiction in the costs, and
could not °Mir the County Commissioneta to
pay the claim, as desired.
Suit was brought, a abort time ago, by a
couple of members of the Duquesne Greys, be
fore an Alderman, to secure compensation for
their services in that manner; bat no decision
has yet been given. If our'volunteers, always
have such a tbfficultygetting paid when they
turn out on the business of the county, the
Sheriff should not order them out. It is mares
minable to expect them, any more than other
citizens, to spend their time doing unpleasant
duty, unless they are paid fur it.
Tax CASE or REV. FRANCIS ZEINISR.-011 Sat
urday, Judge M'Cluro, in the Court of Quarter
Sessions, sentenced the Rev. Francis Zeiner to
pay a fine of six and s quarter cents sod the
costs of prosecution. The counsel of the de
fendant, Col Black, stated, when speaking on
the case, that the costs bad run up to $5O, which
was enormous for a simple assault and battery,
and considering the case bad never gone before
a jury, a demurrer having been made to the in
dictment betore it was taken up. Ills Honor
stated that be did not know the costs were so
high, and directed that only five of the witnesses
should be paid—the prosecutor and two others
on each side. Toe late Clerk of the Court, Ja
red M. Brush, was appointed a commissioner to
settle the claims. We understand seventeen
witnesses had bean subpcened, although a rule
of Court prescribed that only four are allowed
to testify.

preferred by Captain C. Seely. The accused, it
appeare, entered the establiehment of the Cap

something to eat and drink, tendered a five dol

ment. The note was pronounced counterfeit,
when be pulled , out and offered another which
was also counterfeit. The Captain then sent for
a police officer, and bad the man arrested. Sub
