I am much pleased with Ur. Bench's little manual, the
“ Field Book of Railroad Rngioeers.” Willi the present**
ticn of some of the moet. practical and useful of recognized
proefk.'-os among railway engineers, be has given others
which, new at least in their preeentTonn, appear to possess
a mint of higher value than that of mere novelty—that of
being in general susceptible of available, not to aay desira
ble, practical use. In conclusion, while 1 think the design
of Mr. Uenck's book is such as to adapt It excellently well
to professional needs, I have pleasure in expressing my
cur dial satisfaction with Its execution, alike with the per

PILLS:
POP. AIL THE PURPOSES OP A

THERE bu long existed a public

what success it accomplishes the pur

physical jriU, but not easy to mako
tii« i>est of all pHts —one which should have none of the ob
jection*, but all the advantages, of eTary other. This has
been attempted here, and with what success we would re
spoctfully submit to ihe public decision. It h*a been nn
fortunate for the patient hitherto that almost exery purge
. tire medicine is acrimonious and Irritating to the bowels.
This is not. Many of them produce so much griping pain
and rcrnlston in the system as to more than counterbalance
th- good to be derlxed from them. Tbeee pHU produce no
irritation or pain, unless it arise from*previously existing
obstruction or derangement in the bowels. Being purely
vegetable, no harm can arise'from their use ro any quanti
§•; hot it Is better that any medicine should be taken jodi
ously. ■ Minute directions for their use in the several
diseases to which they are applicable are gixen on the box.
Ararng the complaints which have been speedUyeured by
them, we may mention Lixer Complaint, Iniu various forme
of Jaundice, Indigestion, Languor, and Loss of Appetite.
Listlessness, Irritability, Billons Headache, Bilious Fever,
Fever and Ague, Fain in the Side and Loins; .for, in truth,
all these are out the consequence of diseased action in the
liver. As an aperient, they afford prompt and sure relief
in Coetixeness, Piles, Colic, Dysentery, llttmors, Scrofula'
and Seurvy, Colds with soreness of the body, Ulcers and im
purity of the blood; in short, any and every case where a
portative is required.
They have also produced some singularlysuecemful cures
in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropey, Gravel, Erysipelas, Palpita
tion of the Heart, Pains in the Back, Stomach and bide.
They should be freely taken in the spring of the year, to
purify the blood and prepare the system for the change of
seasons. An occasional doee stimulates the stomach and
bowels Into healthy action, and restores the appetite and
vigor. They purify the blood, and, by their stimulant ac
tion on the circulatory system, renovate the strength of the
body, and restore the wasted or diseased energies of the
whole organism. Hence an occasional dose a advanta
geous, even though no serious derangement exists; but un
necessary dosing should never be carried 100 for, as every
purgative mediane reduces the strength, when taken to
excess. The thousand eases in which a physic is required
cannot bo enumerated here, but tfreysuggast themselves
to the reason of everybody; and It is confidently believed
this pniwill answer a better purpose than any thlngwhkh
has hitherto been available to mankind. When their vir
tues are once known, the public will no longer doubt what
remedy to employ when in need of a cathartic medicine.
