DEMOCRATIC PRISCIPLEB ETER
the same.
It finite the enemies of Democracy to allege j
ttat Democrats, aa well as Whigs, ohange ibeii j
principles: Bat the charge is untrne. For the I
last half century the great cardinal principles of J
the Democratic party hare been erer the same,
as a comparison of the past with the present
will clearly illustrate. It is well to review the
past occasionally, to see that oar ancient land
marks have not been removed.
Too Democratic party of this country Las ever
a Ivocated entire religious freedom. They place
all religious sects and denominations upon an
equal footing under the law and the constitu
tion, and protect them equally in all their oivi)
rights. Onr party neither protcriba nor prrfcr
any sect on account of itJ religions opinions, but
considers all, of whatever faith, equally entitled
not only to the privileges of citisene, but to the
emoluments of office, if they oan win official
position by the popular vote, or other constitu
tional means. Thomas Jefferson, the founder o( ,
our party, was among the first to contend for ;
the principle of religious freedom. He secured
the passage of a bill by the Virginia legislature j
recognising the principle in its broadest sense,
before the federal constitution was adopted : ami
he ever afterwards looked back upon that statute
as one of the proudest monuments of his active
political life. No proof is needed that our party
has ever sinoe contended for and sustained the
same great principle. Even now the Democratic
party over the whole country is arrayed, and
seriously and actively contending against a 50-
oret poUtical combination that eeeka to proscribe
a religions sect; and would revive again the in
tolerant spirit and religious persecutions of the
days of ignorance and despotism. In this task,
as in all others that Democrats have undertaken,
they will surely triumph. A liberal spirit per
vades the Amerioan republio in this nineteenth
century; and religious warfare, and sectarian
bigotry oan never become a successful or per
manent element ef American politics. Demo
crate prefer no one religious seot to another, j
They merely prefer that all sects remain free i
and unmolested; and that religious questions
Shall never be dragged into the political arena.
Another Democratic principle, time-honored,
and still aotive, is the extension of our territory
by just and proper means. It commenced with
the acquisition of Louisiana under a Democratic
administration, and has continued until the area
of the republic is almost doubled. Eaoh new j
acquisition has removed a dangerous or trouble
some neighbor, given us increased facilities for
uninterrupted commeroe, and new and inex
hauatable sources of national wealth and i
strength. Louisiana, Florida, Texas, New Mex
ioo, California, Oregon, Utah, Kansas and Ne
braska, Arkansas, Missouri, lowa and Min
nesota are all acquisitions of Demooratio ad
ministrations; and, added to the original do
main of the republio, gives no one of the widest
and richest empires of the world. The demo
cratic party is still in favor of a just expansion
of the domain of the republic. It wil
lingly acoepts the “ manifest destiny" of this
country to extend its freedom, its civilisation, its
admirable constitution and liberal laws over the
Whole North American continent.
While Democrats would thus extend the bor
ders of the republio from ocean to ocean, and
from the fresen north to tropioal south, they
would people the realms acquired with a liberty
loving, law-Bbidiog, intelligent and industrious |
population. For this purpose they oontend for I
and enaot liberal laws of naturalisation; and
welcome to our shores the oppressed of other j
lands. Daring the administration of John
Adame, the federal Whig, the term of residence
before ’naturalisation was limited to fourteen
yours. During the first or second year of Jeffer
son’s administration It was reduced to five years.
There it has ever since remained, notwithstand
ing repeated exertions of the opponents of
Dsmooraoy to have the time extended to fourteen
or twenty-one years, and oven to repeal all laws
giving the privilege of American eitisenehip to
those born in other lauds. Against a secret po ■
lttloal combination that would discourage immi
gration, and exolude all of foreign birth from
participation in our freedom and prosperity, the
Demooratio party is now arrayed, .contending
still for the principle and polloy udopteS by the
Democracy a half a oentury ago.

" The great fundamental principle of our frea
institutions is the right of the people to goverh
themselves. Popular tovnagnty, in its most ex]-
tended and praotloal eesee, U the cardinal prin
! oiple of the Democratic party. It has donebat
; tie for that principle, against.furious opponents,
! ofun, earnestly and socoesefolly. The la f l
: struggle for its j net application was in the last
Bession of Congress, daring the passage of the
new territorial bill—and again the principle tri
umphed. Intimately oonneoted with this is the
doctrine of States’ Eights, for which our party
has ever contended. It would allow the people
of each State and Territory to form and deter
mine its own looal institutions, and oontrol all
its own looal affairs. For half a century, the
opponents of Defnooraoy have sought to subvert
this most salutary and beneficent principle, but
without success. The Democracy has “'> atamed
it, and again applied it in the Kansas-Nebraska
bill. . , QOA
I The subject of slavery has been, sinoe 18.0,
a constant theme of agitation and dteoord.
Democrats, aware of the fruitlessness and dan
ger of suoh perpetual agitation, contend for the
principle of non-intervention by Congress on the
subjeot. They contend that slavery is a looal
insulation, entirely under the control of the
States in which it exists ; and as to new territo
ries, they contend that it is still a local question,
that should be dsoide.d by the people or those
territories. The people of those territories hove
a right to shape and'determioo their own local
institutions, as did the early settlers of the older
Sutes. To the tribunal of the po. ular will
Dcmoorate refer the question of slavery or no
slavery in the new territories. Surely no Bafer
tribunal oan be found, consistent with the funda
mental principle of j popular sovereignty. That
is the Democratic dootrloe, and it prevailed at
tho last session of Congress. That principle,
constantly applied,: will drive slavery agitation,
in a great measure, cut of Congress; will do
equal Justioe to both sections of the Onion ;
store harmony where before was discord ; and
tend to limit, rather than extend the area of
Blatery.
Dcmooratß hare ever advooated and adopted
a bold and energetic foreign policy, »nch as
would afford speedy and ample protection to onr
oitiaene, our commerce and our rights abroad.
Tnough peace is desired, it is not boogbt by
Democrats administrations at the expense of the
| national rights and honor, or tho Bafety of oar
oltisens, as the wars of 1812 and 1846 will at
test. A few events, snch as the KoitXd and
Grey town affairs, and the pending demands on
Spain, will attest that on this policy the Demo
oracy is the some now aa eeer before.
Democrats hare eeer contended for a moderate
tariff,—a tariff for retenno alone, with some dis
crimination for the sake of protection. They
contend for the same thing stilla tariff that
will only produoe revenue enough for the ordi
nary expenses of the gorernment economically
administered. When it is now found that the
present tariff prodnoes more than is necessary
j for that purpose, a reduotion of duties, and on
| extension of the free list are proposed.
Time will not permit ns a farther review at
present. But from what we hare writlen it will
be seen that Democratic principles are erer the
same. They ore tho same now as they were half
a century ago. They are all broad and national
in their scope ; enduring as our institutions ; all
consistent with our federal oonßtitution strictly
construed; all recognising the equal righto of
all sections.cf the Union, and all favoring con
stitutional freedom, progress, and national de
velopemcnt. That they are wise and beneficent,
toe rapid growth and unexampled prosperity of
our country, under their almost uninterrupted
operation for half a century, abundantly attest.'
Democrats, when Whigs tell you the principles
of onr party change, believe them not. It is
false. Our principles change not. The ancient
landmarks are not removed. We need no new
cardinal principles. Those that we have will
suit all times, and all lands where freedom pre

Disgraceful Abolition Proceeding et S«-
i«n, Ohio.
A most disgraceful proceeding ooourrod at
Salem, Ohio, on Monday. The oars that left
here that morning, it appears, had on board a
Southern family and a female elare, about ten
years old. When the cars armed at Salem, a
crowd of abolitioniete, who had been apprised
of the foot by telegraph, gathered around and
tore the ohild from its mistress, notwithstanding
its protesting that it did not want to learc her,
but go baoa to where her mother was. Mr.
Robinson, of Memphis, the master, offered to
make out free papers if the ohild wished its lib
erty, providing they would let her come back if
she said so; but the fanatios would hear of
nothing of the kind. The leader of the gang,
and the man who tore the little darkey away
from Mrs. R., was Henry B. Blackwell, of the
6rm of Coombs, Ryland St Blackwell, hardware
I merchants, Cincinnati. Ho is one of those men,
the Commercial says, who will willingly steal a
! nigger, but has never been known to give a cent
I to a free man in distress.

Without education, and beyond the reeoh of
motel or religions teachings, deficient in intel

led a brief and disgraceful career, and died an
Ignominious death upon the sqaffold. The first
downward step in Johnsons oareer, and that
which in all probability hastened his ruin, was
disobedience to his parents; for according to his
own confession he deserted them early in life,
and has bean an outcaßt and wanderer from his
home ever sinoo. His parents, ws are Informed,
are still living Alexandria, Virginia, and are
reaDßOtable citlsens and members of tho Presby

and sisters living, none or whom, however,
“ visited him while in prison,” or were present
at his death soeno.

Fiqkting tai Tiawu —Abraham Longinecker,
Esq., of Blackliek township, Cambria county, a
few evenings since started lo watch a deer lick-
He reached the groond about sunset and mount
ed a tree, for the purpose of watching. In a
short time ho heard a noise, and looking round
for the expected prise hie eyes fell on—not a
deer, but—a panther. Another and another ap
peared, until four gathered near the trunk of
the tree he had ascended. He took deliberate
aim at one of them, but the ball did not take
effect, and the eavage animals commenced look
ing around and at length discovered oar ftdven
turer among the branches overhead. He loaded
1 again and fired, only slightly ruifliag the fur of
! one of them. In his trepidation the stopper Of
I his powder flask was lost, and he bad no farther
i means of defending himself. They then gatb
; ered around the tree and attempted its ascent,
i Hot the small sire of the tree and the smooth
; ness of the bark prevented this. At this time
! Mr. L. commenced yelling most lustily; and,
i some neighbors attracted by his yells, with
i toroh lights sought the scene of his adventure.
At the aight of the flra-Ue ferocious animals
' vamMtd, and the ’Squire was relieved from his
perilous situation.
Derangement off the Liver, is one of tie
most common, as well a* the most formidable of diseases
known to American physicians. It had tor years attracted
the closest a’.tention of the modical faculty in all parGs of
the United States, and yet up to the time of the dKcoveiry
of Dr. M’Lane’- great Specific, it was almost beyond the
reach of medical drill. Thousands had perished without
even a hope of relief, and although thousand* may yet be
destined to feel the direful effects of this most complicated
disease, it is nor, thanks to the research of Dr. M’Latrv,
moat completely brought within the scope of medical con
trol. The proprietors of the Liver Pills feel confident that
they offer a remedy which ha* bren fully lested by time,
ami which has never failed of success when fairly tried.
Purchasers will be careful to ask for Dr. M’Lane's Cele
brated Liver Pills, and take nono else. There are other
Pills, purporting to be Liver Pills, now before the public.
Dr. Sl'Lane'a Liver Pills, also hi* celebrated Vermifuge, can
j now be had at all respectable drug store* in the Doited
States and Canada.
