In the old town of Rudeehiem, on the Rhine,
is one of those dilapidated castleswfaieh irapait
enoh pietnresqne beauty to the scenery of Ger
many. Among the ruioe, Karl Schelling, a
poor, bard-working peasant, made for himself a
home. With him dwelt his good wifKLiesbet,
end two bine-eyed children, named Frjti and
Grotchen. A few cooking utensils, and wooden
stools, constituted all their furniture ; ard one
brown and white goat was all thoy had to re
mind them of flocks aad herds. Barthcee poor
children led a happier life than those email imi
tations of humanity, who are bred up in eity
palaces, and drilled to walk tbroogh existenoe
in languid drawing-room paces. From moss
grown arches in the old ruins they ooald watoh
boats and vessels gliding over the sparkling
Rhine, and see broad meadows golden with the
sunshine. On »be terrace of the oastle the wind
bad planted may flowers. It was richly carpet
ed with various kinds of moss, tufts of grass,
blue-bells and little pinks. Here Karl .often
carried feed to hie goat, and left the children to
tend upon him. There had been a stork's nest
on the roof from time immemorial; and the lit
tle ones were early taught to reverence the birds
as omens of blessing. The simple yonng soul's
were quite unconscious of-poverty.. The splen
did Rhine, with all its islands—the broad pas
tore-lands, with herds peaeefnlly grazing—
bouses nestling among woody hills—all seemed
to belong to them—and, in reality,, they pos
sessed them more traly then, many a rise man,
who,
44 One moment gases on his flower*,
The next'they ST#-forgot;
And eat-th ot his rtnst fruits
As though he ate them not.' 1
- On their litte heaps of straw, brother aad de
ter slept soundly In eaoh other's arms ; aad if
the booting of an owl pfasnoed to wake than,
some bright star looked in with friendly eye*
through chinks in the walls, and said, 14 Go to
sleep, little ones; for ill little ohildren are dear
to the good God.”
Thus, with scanty, fpod and coarse olothee,
plenty of pure air and blue sky, Fritz and hie
sister went band in hand over their rugged but
flower strewn path of life till he was nearly sev
en years oicL Then came Uncle Heinrich, his
mother’s brother, who said the boy eonldbe use
ful to him at the mill where he worked;!mid if
the parents were willing to bind him to .fie ser
vice, he would.supply him with food anif cloth
ing, and give him an outfit when he came of age.
Tears were in Bieabet's eyes, for she thongbt
how lonely it would seem to ..and little Gretohen
when they should no longer heir Fritz invoking
the birds, or einging aloud to the high heaven.
But they were very poor, and the ehlfd most
earn bis bread. So, with much sorrow to part
with father and mother, and Gretchen* the goat
aod the stork, acd with some gladness to go to
new scenes, Fritz departed, from the old neat
that bad served him for a home. Mounted with
Unole Heinrich on the millers donkey, be ambled
along through rocky paths, by deep ravipes and
castle-crowned hills, with here and there glimp
ses of the noble river, flowing on bright aad
strong, reflecting images of spires, cottages, and
yioe-eovered slopes. When he arrived at hie
new home, the good grandmother, gave him a
right friendly welcome, and promised to set op
on her knitting needles, a striped blue cap for
him to wear. Uncle Heinrich was kind in his
rough way; but ho thought it an excellent plan
for boyß to eat little and work hard.
Fritz, remembering the blossom carpet of the
old castle, was always delighted to spy a.clump
of flowers. Hia undo tcld him .they looked well
enough, but he wondered that anybody should
ever plant them, since they never jr&s useful
either to eat or wear, and that when W grew
older, he would doubtless think mere of pence
than posies. Thus tho child to be
ashamed; as of'something wrong, when £e was
ought digging a flower. But hb laborious and
economical relatives taught him many orderly
and thrifty ways, which afterwards had 'great
influence on his success in life; and fortunately
a love for the beautiful could not be pressed out
of him.
Kind, all-embracing Nature took him In her
arms and whispered ; many things to preterra
him from becomings a mere animal. All day
long he waa At work; but the blossoming tree
wag hie friend, and the bright little mill stream
chattered cotily, and smiled when the-good
grandmother gave it hit clothe* to wash*
The miller’s donkey, ambling along through
sunlight paths over the bills, was a picture to
him. From his small gsrat-wiodow he eonld
see the mill-wheel scattering bright drofwia the
moonlight—&n<Hie fell asleep to the gentle 2nl
iaby of ever-flowing water. Other education
than this he had not.
“ His only teaehm had been woods utdhfllt.

An aged neighbor, cetemporary 'with the
grandmother, toolt a great .liking to Frits; and
on Sundays, when np work could .be done, he
was often allowed to go and take dinner or enp
per there. The old man had traversed nearly
all Germany aa a pedlar, and hadcome-to die in
the old homestead near the; mill, where he had
worked when a boy. He knew by heart tU the
wild fkiry legends of the country,, and, in. hie
character of pedlar-guest, had acquired a talent
for relating them in a manner peculiarly Mmwafaig
and exciting to children. In the ooorse of his
travels, he pad likewise collected meey tMrgir
which seemed very remarkable to. the Inasperi
eneed eye of Frits; such aa euriofctamoklng
pipes aud drinking-cups, and Images m aU the
various oostumes of Germany/ But what meet
attracted his attention was an ancient eloek,
brought from Copenhagen when the pedlar's
father was a young man. ' When the dook was In
it* aright mind, it could about
as simple aa “ Molly put the kettle oa.V - But
the friction of many year* had so wora tbe eop
of the wheels, that it was’frightfollj out of tune.
This did net trouble the boy's nerves, and be
was prodigiously amused with the sputtering,
soething, jumping, jibbering eomnda it made
when set in motion.. .To eaoh of
tunes he gave eome name. “ There goes
the Spitting Cat,” he would say/ “ nowlet us
hoar Old. Hen.”
Father. Rndplpb called the rickety old manhine
his blacking-box, because he bad bought it with
the prooeeds of a peculiar kind of blaetihg, of
his own manufacture. He waftdwaye praising
this blacking; and one day be said, <c rhave
never told any one the eeera&of it; hnv
if you are a good boy, Frits, I will show you
bow'it is done.” The child could not otherwise
than respect what had procured each a'wonder
ful clock; and when he fell asleep that night,
there floated through his mind undefined visions
of being able, eome time or other, to purchase
such a comioal machine for himself. This seemed
a very unimportant incident of hie childhood;
but it waa the introduction of a thread, re
appeared again in his web of life.
Frits passed at the old mill four.yeaKfo.of
health happiness and bard labor/ For three
years Father Rudolph was an Umailing soune
of entertainment. Alternately with the oMdo
old songs, and wild legends of fairies"aud- gob*
lins, he imparted much of a traveler's discur
sive observation, and thorough practical
edge concerning the glosey jet blacking. At
last ho fell asleep, and the boy heard the ptea
j sent old voice no more, except in the oavefojef
memory. The good grandmother survived the
companion of her youth only a Few mouths.
! The ancient balladd eho aeed to orbocr at
i spinniog-wheel, had oaogbt something of thi
‘ monotous flow of water, which forever segegt*
I panied them ; and Frits, as be passed up .and
l down from the mill to the brook, missed 1 flke
I quaint old as ho would havo ■lesiid
rustling of the leaves, the chirping ariohetfc lit
any other dear old familiar socod. He missed,
too, her kind, motherly ways, and the little
oomforta with wbieh her ears supplied hfim.
With the.exception of his rough/but renOy
kind-hearted unole, he waa now alone in .fie
world.' He had visited Budesheim but. onoe.
Rod had greatly amused Gretcben with hU inu
tations of the erasy clock. Bat bb parents had
