On the whole the controversy is rather inter
esting, and pretty evenly sustained. It is resul
ting too in_a pretty equal division of the trade
of the west between the great rival emporiums .
Each hare some advantages; but those of Phil
adelphia will always insure to her a large share
of the trade and prosperity of the country.

Gen. Bowman to some of the western counties.
The fact is, Gen. Bowman is Adjutant General
of the State; and in pursuance of his duties,
made a trip to Meadville to inspect the State
Arsenal there. He bad to come through Greens
burgh; and stopped a day with his friends in
that place. Then he was obliged to come
through Pittsburgh ; and he stopped a short
time here, where he bas hosts cf friends. He
went from here to Cleveland, thence through
Erie to. Meadville. It is well known that the
best way to get to Meadville now is through
Cleveland and Erie ; all the way by railroad, ex
cept 25 miles. Bat the Gazelle sees in this
journey of the General a political motive:—
thinks it was with a view to advance the inter
ests of the Democracy. Says the Gazette, he
stopped at Greeusburg a thy: there is a
suspicious circumstance t He stopped a day or
two in Pittsburgh : that is confirmation pretty
strong. Then he stopped a short time in Cleve
land. The Gazette says nothing about that.
But he stopped a few hours in Eric, and our
neighbor is pretty certain it was an electioneer
ing tour. But be made a short speech to the
soldiers at a military parade in Meadville. That
settles the queetion.
Now, supposing the Gazette to be able to sub
stantiate its charge, what of it? What impro
priety was there in it? Is it anything unusual
But the charge is not substantiated. Gen. Bow
man went to Meadville by the best route, in
spected the State Arsenal there, and returned
by the enure route to his home. Out' of these
facts the editor of the Gasecte endeavors to
manufacture a humbug with which to deceive
the people.

COLLEGE PRESIDENT ELECTED.-At a meeting
of the Board of Trustees of the Indiana Asbury
University, Greencastle, August 17, Rev. Daniel
Curry, D. D., of New York city, was elected
President of the University. Dr. Curry is well
known by his contributions to the Quarterly
Review, and is esteemed one of the ablest theo
logians, as well as one of the profoundest Schol
ars, In the Methodist church.

Had "Time Coining" liar Hard Drinkers.
The whisky, broody and wine crop is going to
be very short this year. Brandy "is ris ;" and
wines are rising in price. Cause, partial failure
of the French vintage. The grape crops of the
Ohio valley will be far less than usual this year;
and the "sparkling Catawba" acid the " still
wines " of native production will be scarce and
dear. Then the short Crops of corn, rye and
potatoes will create a demand for all our grains
for food; and distillation must be greatly re
duced. In fact, the lovers of good • liquors will
be compelled either to pay rousing prices, or re
duce the quantity of " indulgence." Good
brandies have risen nearly a dollar per gallon in
four weeks; and whisky has risen about a
sispenoe per gallon in six weeks. It will proba
bly rise still more rapidly as the effects of the
drought develope themselves.
The temperance cause may - find an unexpected
ally in the unexampled drought with which the
country is afflicted.. With such prices as food
must bear, should the dry weather prove as de
structive to crops as is apprehended, people can
not afford to pay exorbitant prices for drinks
also.
We wish we bad more severe laws against the
adulteration of liquors. The temptation to make
liquors by unnatural processes will be strong,
and snob compounds are most destructive to
health.
MANITTACTIJIMI vs. COXISCRCS.—On our first
page will be found an Interesting and able article
from the Louisville Aurae& entitled 'Philosophy
of Cities." The writer maintains what we have
several times advocated, viz: that manufactures
have more to do in building up and sustaining a
large city than commerce simply. But it is
where these two are combined that we tied those
immenee'collections of men. There is, however,
another thing as important as either of these for
the rapid growth and prosperity of a city: it is
that the basiuess commanity should ba men f
enterprise. If a set of Rip Van Winkles repre
sent the business men, ali the combined advan•
tages of manufactures and commerce will be of
little avail.

BLOW LIGHT3I7O.-A fire oocnrred in Milwau
kee last Thisroday, which destroyed property to
tho value of nearly a million dollars, and con
sumed a large portion of the busineee part of
the city. Four days have since elapsed without
receiving seen an intimation, by the wires, that
such a thing had oco rred. In the meantime,
Uncle Sam has supplied us with a full account;
and we now expect, very shortly, to receive the
same news " by telegraph."
P. B.—As we expected, the lightning brought
a meagre account of the Milwaukee fire at a late
hour last night. What a great institution the
telegraph is getting to be!
Tax Daorrtm.—Although the amount of rain
we had here was very light, from other parts of
the country wo have aceounts of the most re
freshing ehowers. New York, Philadelphia,
Baltimore, Cincinnati, and other cities, base
been each bounteously blessed. Unfortunately,
it has come too late to do much good, but we
must be thankful for small favors.

TAXATION WBosron.—The Board of Asses;
tors of Boston haut determined that the rate of
taxation the present year shall be $9,20 on
$lOOO valuation; increase of $1,60 on $lOOO
over last year, when the rate was $7,60. The
valuation of the real estate taxed in ten millions
more than last year, when it was $116,090,900.
On personal estate there has been an increased
valuation of about nine millions over the valua
tion of 1854, when it was $90,428 800 The
total valuation of last year was $205,514,200.
This year it will be $225,000,000 in round num
bere.

four hours ending at dark last evening, the river
raised one Inch and a quarter (14) ! At this
season river men say "an inch is a foot." The
same authority is hid for the following philosophy
of hot and dry weather rises of rivers:—" Toe

and draws out the ;springs. It is a foot often

when extremely loin, on occasion of a spell of

Twelve o'clock, Augost 27th, 1864, will long
be remembered as a terrible epoch in the history
of Louisville. With that hour came death to

many persons assembled in t e house of God,
engaged in worship, and des otion to a vast
amount of property in this c' . .
One of the most violent storms which has ever
swept over this section of Kentucky left its
dreadful footprints in the city yesterday. After
a severe drouth of many weeks duration, the
sky, early in the day, indicated rein. The clouds
gathered, end we bad what persona, not within
the reach of the tornado accompanying it, would
call a thunder shower But within the reach of
its sweeping breath was the Third Presbyterian
Church. corner of Eleventh and Walnut streets,
which it completely wrecked, blowing from •
westwardly direction, the entire building fell in,
roof, rafters, brictt walls, and all crushing some
twenty of the congregation to instant death, and
wounding seriously, perhaps mortally, some ten
or twelve others.

graph column yesterday. We subjoin the names
of the wounded.]
Mrs. Taylor, wife of Mr. Taylor, who was
killed, liud child. Both severely. Mise Duff,
residence on Eighth street. between Walnut and
Chestnut, three ribs broken and otherwise in
jured—will probably recover. Mrs. Penneba
; slightly injured. Mrs. Morsel', danger
ously injured; no hopes of recovery. Miss
Morrell, aged eighteen years ; severely injured,
but will probably recover. Mrs. Hewitt and
(Milo ; badly hurt. but will recover. Wash. Its..
gen, of the Eighth Ward police, seriously in
jured. Mr. Bradley, bricklayer, had an eye
knocked out while efforts were being made to
rescue him from the ruins. Mies Cooper, se
verely injured. It is known that a ;me twenty
other persons were injured, but we were unoble
to ascertain their names.

The storm that passed over the city yesterday
was one of the most destructive that ever oc-
curred in thu West. It commenced about twelve
o'clock, passing over that part of the city lying
between Fifth and Twenty-first streets, tearing
up trees, unroofing houses, and prostrating a
large number of buildings. Captain Greenlaw's
new steamer, "New Memphis," lying at the
lower city wharf, betercen Sixth and Seventh,
was almost • completely wrecked, The cabin,
which was in a forward state of completion, was
blown entirely off and fell into the river near
Corn Island. The boat was also blown over
to the island and much injured. It is thought
that it will take $5,000 to repair the damages
to the boat. The new steamer W. W. Farmer,
the Colbert, and one or two other boats, were
blown from their moorings and lodged on the
roan opposite the foot Of Fifth street. They
all succeeded in getting off, however, without
sustaining much injury. The splendid block of
four story houses recently erected on the north
aide of Main street, between Eighth and Ninth,
were completely destroyed, and it is thought
that two or three men were buried in the ruins.
The upper story of the extensive Rope and
Bagging Factory of W. A. Richardson A. Co., on
Magazine streets, was blown down, and portions
of it carried a distance of several hundred yards.
The new City School Rouse, at the ooruer of
Niuth and Magazine streets, was unroofed, and
portions of the tin roofing carried to a distance
of SOO yards. The roof of the Blind Asylum, on
Chestnut street, between Eighth and Ninth
streets, was badly damaged. The Medical Col
lege, on Chestnut street, between Eighth and
Ninth, was much injured. The residence of Mr.
Jobuston, flour inspector, on the corner of
Ninth and Broadway, was completely unroofed.
Damages, four or fire hundreddollars. Several
!locums on Eighth street, between Megstine and
Chestnut, belonging to Mr. Fuller, were un
roofed. The residence of Mr. J. Callahan, on
the corner of Ninth and Magazine, was consid•
erably injured. The brautiful family residence
of Col. Wm Riddle, on Kentucky street, between
Eighth and Nii th, was unroofed. A large brick
omitting on Kentucky street, above Eighth,
owned by A. McKinley, was unroofed.
Another large house in the slate neighborhood,
owned by Cii. Samuel Churchill, was unroofed.
The residence of Mr. Joseph Ltily, on Tenth et.,
between Magazine and Chestnut, was much in
jured; a portion of the tack part of the build
ing was blown down. Two brick cottages en
Eleventh street, between Magazine and Broad
way, were partially blown down. The back part
of the German Protestant Orphan Asylum, on
Jefferson street, between Eighteenth and Nine
tenth, was unroofed. Two small brick houses
on Twentieth street, between Jefferson and Gray
son, were unroofed ; one belonged to Mr. Short,
and the other to Mrs. Nugent. Mrs. Nugent
was asleep in her house when the accident oc
curred, but singular to say, escaped unharmed.
A row of twenty one brick cottages, on Ken
tucky street, belonging to .Meesrs. Cochran and
Muselman, were all completely unroofed. A
boy, whose name we did not learn, was killed by
the falling of a piece of timber.
Many other houses were injured, which we
have not space to specify this morning. Trees
were uprooted in every part of the city, moat of
them below Sixth street. We have heard of va
rious estimates of the probable amount of dam
age done to property in the city by the storm,

informed that In Shippingsport and Portland,
the storm was very light, and no damage of eon.
iiequeuce was sustained. There was a rumor in
'he city last night that a church in New Albany
was struck by lightning, and a large number of
persons killed; but we could trace the report to
no reliable source. We understand that the
storm was very severe in Jeffersonville, and that
three or four houses were blown down.

district, James Landy, for Congress, received
2.060 out of 4,79 votes cast.
The Ohio Statesman says " Luoy Stone, the
eloquent lecturer, on slavery, is, it is rumored,

The Chutchman, (organ of the High Church
Episoopalians,) published in New York, comes
out in a strong three-columned leader, denun
ciatory of the Know-Nothings, and oalllwk up
on the good and the patriotic of all dames to
set their faces against any and all such organi
sations.
Hon. Stephen A. Douglas arrived at Chicago
on Wednesday last, and was waited upon by
some of the principal men of the city. The at
tempts of the Whig papers to have him mobbed
failed eggregiouely.
A young man named B. W. Barnard, apparent
ly about 25 years of age, committed suicide, by
cutting his throat with a penknife. in Jefferson,
Guernsey county. Ohio, on the 17th inst. He
was a stranger in the place, and it I. supposed
was suffering from aberration of mind. He left
at A. E Conks' hotel a trunk, containing en ex
cellent suit of clothes, and other valuables, to
gether with $30,90 in money.
Gathering boulders in the bed of the river on
the bar from Newport Ferry landing to James
town, is just now a profitable business for a
la•-ge number of men and boys, who have quite
a fleet of weed boats and skiffs employed. The
bar that is now yielding so well, has for years
been covered with sand, until this season. The
floods of last winter bared the treasure. Men
are said to be making $lO per day taking out
boulders—quite tie much as is made on the Cali
fornia placers.
On Saturday, the Philadelphia agent of Hare
den's Express, deposited at the Mint about five
thousand dollars worth of the melted gold taken
from the recently raised wreck of the nsfortu
nate steamer Erie, which was burnt and sunk on
Lake Erie some thirteen years ago. There was
found mixed in with the melted money part of
an old German look, the material parts of which
were in a pretty good state of preservation. On
raising the wreck it was found burnt nearly to
the keel, and to be broken forward, near where
the gold was found. It is believed that a consid
erable portion of the gold has been lost through
tie break.

in the course of a recent editorial review of the,
various naval invasions chronicled in the world'a
history, admits that " the success of the British
force that dashed up the Potomac, landed, and
after a quick march, destroyed Washington,
and then as speedily beat a retreat, can hard
ly be considered an affair of legitimate war
fare, being little more than a piratical and
fruitless surprise on an unarmed and unsus
pecting population." This is a note worthy
oonfeesion.

flagration.that ever visited the city of Milwau
kle, broke out about 12 M., on the 24th lust., in
Davis' Stables, rear of the U. S. Hotel.;
The wind was blowing fresh from the South
east, and in a few moments the whole row of
buildings from Davis' to the Tremont House was
in flames. The wind then shifted to the east,
and in an incredible short space of time, the 11.
S. Hotel,' and the whole block, extending
from Huron, East Water and Michigan streets,
including the whole square bounded by Main,
Huron, East Water, and Michigan streets, was
in flames. The destruction of this valuable
property was comparatively but the work of a
moment. The flames then extended across East
Water street to the west side, destroying all the
buildings from the corner of Huron street to
Neoro's Hardware store. The loss is variously
estimated at from $600,000 to $1,000,000. The
following is a correct list of losses so far as as
certained:

Gardiner, Dry Goods, loss heavy. Insurance
$l5OO. Bosworth's Drug Store, stock was
large—loss heavy, partly insured. Upon the
whole, from twenty five to thirty buildings were
destroyed, many of them the most substantial
brick buildings in the city. Mr. Kennedy, In
surance agent, has some 816,000 or $20,000 in
addition to what is above enumerated, Mr. Boise
about $12,000, and Mr. Wheeler about $lB,OOO
more. The progress of the flames was so rapid
and the efforts of the firemen almost paralysed,
that the greatest confusion and excitement pre
vailed. The streets were :Shed with smoke:
One building was filled with fire-works, which
produced a sueottesicta of loud explosions, and
walls were constantly falling with a loud crash.

A gentleman who came to the city yesterday,
informs us that Beekman, Duchess county, en
Thursday night last, was the scene of en occur
rence so heartrending that it has thresh a gloom
over the whole neighborhood. In the absence
of Mr. Abraham Simpson, his dwelling house
took Ape, while hrifirand Ilve children were
asleep within. S orapid was the spread of the
flouts., that ere the inmates could mate their
escape, the whole building was enveloped in the
fiery mantle. Mrs. Simpson, after almost super
human efforts, escaped with her life, but in no
doing sustained burns and injuries of the most
shocking nature; while, horrible to relate, her
five children were burned to death. The spec
tacle was one of the most awful that can be im
agined, and the bereaved parents are said to be
well night friend° from the lose of their darling..
The fire is anipoeed to have been caused by soma
incendiary, itho had a grudge against the un
fortunate Simpson.
